2016-2017 Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy Pre-AP Mathematics-Grade 6 Syllabus Welcome to YWCPA!!! This year students will explore a variety of mathematical topics such as problem solving, fractions, decimals, percent, geometry, measurement, probability, statistics, and pre- algebra. The use of technology and web resources supports student learning. Students will develop a foundation vehicle for understanding and remembering the mathematical concepts. We are excited about the curriculum and its potential for helping students develop strong mathematical knowledge and skills. Course Overview Grade 6 Pre-AP Mathematics allows students to deepen their understanding of math. They will master fundamental math concepts, developmental writing and problem-solving skills necessary for success for advanced placement into Algebra 1 in place of the 8 th grade math. This course is a rigorous course. Welcome to YWCPA!!! This year students will explore a variety of mathematical topics such as problem solving, fractions, decimals, percent, geometry, measurement, probability, statistics, and pre-algebra. The use of technology and web resources supports student learning.

CommunicationAfter students are issued laptops, all students will be required to sign up for Class Dojo. This programs will allow parents and students to be sent reminders and other important information. It is also provided in an App on s-mobile device so that students and parents can receive updates, set up a conferences, and check homework that students are responsible for. CurriculumThe YWCPA Mathematics department uses the HISD district curriculum.  Each grading period, students will be completing the following units

1st 6 Weeks: Number Theory, Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Decimals 2nd 6 Weeks: Fractions, Decimals and Integers 3rd 6 Weeks: Equations, Inequalities 4th 6 Weeks: Algebraic Reasoning, Probability, Area and Volume, Angles and Polygons 5th 6 Weeks: Data Analysis, Financial Literacy, Measurement and Transformations 6th 6 Weeks: Readiness & Supporting Standards Review

TechnologyStudents will be issued a laptop. It is the student’s responsibility to bring the laptop to class daily ready to use. * More information will be provided

Absence and Late Work Policy

Students are responsible for asking for make-up work when absent.The first instructional day work is late it is 25 points off.The second instructional day work is late it is 50 points off.

Late work WILL NOT be accepted after the second instructional day of the assignment. If there is an emergency, please contact me at [email protected]

Homework Students are responsible for following instructions, completing all assigned homework and returning homework the next class session unless otherwise indicated. Students will be assigned homework online, online homework DOES NOT need to be printed out. If a problem arises students or student’s parent/guardian should contact the teacher as early as possible.

Test

Tests will be in the format of state (STAAR), and program (AP) exams, in order to prepare students for the types of questions/writing prompts they will encounter. Tests include formative assessments, district benchmark assessments, LTF (Laying the Foundation) Pre-AP benchmark tests and grading cycle exams.TutorialsStudents will be offered a tutorial session during the week. The tutorial session is not mandatory, but is highly recommended. Tutorial dates and times will be posted in class and online. Tutorial sessions are subject to change upon teacher’s discretion. Please contact me via email if there is any questions or concerns regarding set tutorial session days.

Retest Policy

Students MUST ask for the retest. Retesting is only offered to students with a failing grade. The highest grade achievable is 75%.
