KFORD

On behalf of my colleagues in the orchestra, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Jones hall this Holiday season. This time of year is nearly impossible to imagine without music, whether it’s a simple song like “I’ll be home for Christmas” or a work as profound and uplifting as Handel’s Messiah. It’s amazing how perfectly music captures the feelings of the season that are so difficult to put into words.

Since this is also the time of year when many consider contributions to charitable and non-profit organizations, it seems like a good time to express our gratitude to the generations of Houston Symphony donors – from the legendary Ima Hogg to today’s current leaders – whose vision has allowed Houston to grow into a city rich in culture and the fine arts.

The mission of an orchestra is to bring the world’s top musicians together, not just for a single con-cert, but to become a part of the community; giving citizens regular access to living performances of the greatest music ever written, presenting outreach concerts accessible to everyone and performing edu-cational and family concerts that introduce the next generation to the art of music. Because this unique endeavor requires such a large number of musicians, no major orchestra can survive on ticket sales alone. Orchestras were once mainly the private ensembles of the wealthy and powerful, and today, in most countries, are subsidized by the government. In America, however, orchestras rely mainly on the voluntary support of enlightened patrons who understand and cherish their mission. The positive side of this equation is that the organization’s future is freely determined by those who truly love and value both their city and great music, and we are all the beneficiaries of a collection of farsighted and philanthropic individuals who have given generously to enable us all to gather together to share in this music.

Like many of my colleagues, I make a modest contribution to the Annual Fund because I believe in the mission and know my gift will be well spent. For those who join me in this belief – and in not having the means to match our most generous supporters – there are still many ways we can help. The Symphony’s support in the community is measured by the number of donors, not just their largess, and even a modest gift can help motivate other future giving. We also have many fine businesses that sponsor us as part of their civic investment. If you value their support of the Symphony, please patronize them and let them know that you have chosen them in part because of their support of Houston and its Symphony.

And more than anything, your attendance at these concerts is deeply meaningful to us. While we musicians are extremely grateful for philan-thropic support, ultimately this is much more than just a job for us, and there is nothing more important than sharing this art with our fellow Houstonians and passing it on to future generations. This year, I plan to buy more Symphony tickets to give as gifts, as I know many friends for whom this music would be a deeply meaningful experience. Thank you for your patronage and we look forward to joining with all of you in the New year. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas from all of us.

Letter to Patrons.................................................................................................

Happy Holidays and welcome to Jones Hall!

Did you know that our Community Connections program reaches thousands of people with free recitals and concerts at Houston hospitals, senior centers and homeless shelters?

Did you know that in any given week our musicians can be found at schools throughout Greater Houston teaching master classes, leading performances or demonstrating their instruments?

Did you know that we will perform more than 400 Classical, Pops, Family, Holiday and other concerts this season, entertaining and inspiring more than 300,000 people?

your support makes all of this – and much more – possible. Thank you!

And now your gift has a chance to create an even greater impact. The Houston Endowment has challenged the Houston Symphony to grow our donor base to 4,000 people this year while also increasing our contributed revenue. If we rise to the challenge, the Houston Endowment will donate $1 million to the Symphony to help ensure we continue to touch so many lives in so many ways. We can’t do it without you.

your gift does make a difference – please make it today!

If you have any questions or would like to make a gift, please contact Ron Fredman, our new senior director of Development, by phone or email – he’d love to hear from you! Ron’s direct line is 713-337-8525 and his email is [email protected].

We wish you and your families Happy Holidays and a very Joyous New year! And, as always, we warmly welcome you to Jones Hall and extend our sincere thanks to you for generously sup-porting the Houston Symphony.

Hans Graf............................................................................................................

Biography............................................................................................................Known for his wide range of repertoire and creative programming, distin-guished Austrian conductor Hans Graf – the Houston Symphony’s 15th Music Director – is one of today’s most highly respected musicians. He began his tenure here on Opening Night of the 2001-2002 season.

Prior to his appointment in Houston, he was music director of the Calgary Philharmonic, the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra and the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra.

A frequent guest with all of the major North American orchestras, Graf has developed a close relation-ship with the Boston Symphony and appears regularly with the orchestra during the subscription season and at the Tanglewood Music Festival.

He made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Houston Symphony in January 2006 and returned lead-ing the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in March 2007. He and the Houston Symphony were invited to appear at Carnegie Hall in January 2010 to present the New york premiere of The Planets—An HD Odyssey.

Internationally, Graf conducts in the foremost concert halls of Europe, Japan and Australia. In October, he led the Houston Symphony on a sold out tour of the UK to present the international premiere of The Planets—An HD Odyssey. He has participated in the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Bregenz and Aix en Provence and appeared at the Salzburg Festival. In summer 2010, he conducted the opening concert of the Aspen Music Festival and returned

to Tanglewood and Chicago’s Grant Park Festival. An experienced opera conductor, Graf first conducted the Vienna

State Opera in 1981 and has since led productions in the opera houses of Berlin, Munich, Paris and Rome, including several world premieres. Recent engagements include Parsifal at the zurich Opera and Boris Godunov at the Opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg.

Born in 1949 near Linz, Graf studied violin and piano as a child. He earned diplomas in piano and conducting from the Musikhochschule in

Graz and continued his studies with Franco Ferrara, Sergiu Celibidache and Arvid Jansons. His career was launched in 1979 when he was awarded first prize at the Karl Böhm Competition.

His extensive discography includes recordings with the Houston Symphony, available through hous-

tonsymphony.org: works by Bartók and Stravinsky, zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony, Berg’s Three Pieces from the Lyric Suite and a DVD of The Planets—An HD Odyssey.

Graf has been awarded the Chevalier de l’ordre de la Legion d’Honneur by the French government for championing French music around the world and the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria.

Hans and Margarita Graf have homes in Salzburg and Houston. They have one daughter, Anna, who lives in Vienna.

So much of the music we associate with the holiday time brings a flood of images into our minds. Whether it is the magnificent power of Handel’s Messiah or the simple tunes associated with the songs we sing, the

music evokes memories and emotions in all of us.The giving of gifts is also a big part of the holidays and we

are all fortunate that we have been given the gift of music. It is a gift we must all cherish and nurture, not just for ourselves but for the generations to come.

In Houston, we are especially privileged to have these magnificent instruments called the Houston Symphony and the Houston Symphony Chorus to bring us the gift of this music. They too

must be cherished and nurtured for the next generations. Thank you for being in our audience, and please come and join us just as often as you can.

In the meantime, Margarita and I wish you the most joyous of holiday times, and we look forward to joining you again in the New year.

MESSIAH George Frideric Handel

Born: Feb 23, 1685, Halle, Saxony

Died: Apr 14, 1759, London, England

Work composed: 1741

Recording: William Christie conducting the baroque ensemble, Les Arts florissants, with vocal soloists and chorus (Harmonia Mundi)

Instrumentation: two oboes, bassoon, two trum-pets, timpani, harpsichord, organ and strings

Few of Handel’s 30 oratorios and dramatic odes are heard today, except for Messiah. In contrast to Samson, Solomon, Belshazzar and numer-ous other Handelian works celebrating biblical heroes and villains, Christ is not personified in the oratorio devoted to his birth, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension into heaven. Nor for that matter are Mary, Joseph, Herod, Peter, Judas or Pilate, all of whom populate texts of such oratorios as the Bach St. Matthew Passion and Berlioz’ The Childhood of Christ.

Most significantly, there is no Evangelist or Narrator to relate the gospel stories of Christmas and Passiontide. Instead, the four vocal soloists and chorus sing about Christ and his message in a blend of texts selected from Old Testament prophets, the gospels of Matthew, Luke and John, and in psalms from the Book of Common Prayer.

The fact that Messiah was ever composed is something of a miracle. Thirty years earlier, Handel had built his fame and fortune in England as a composer and producer of Italian opera. When the popularity of that form died down and English audiences became tired of hearing theatrical entertainments in a foreign language, Handel turned to writing and producing English-language oratorios, chiefly during the 1730s.

With the addition of a chorus to the drama and stirring tales from the Bible or mythology, these oratorios took hold among London audi-ences and revived Handel’s sagging career, until their appeal also began to wane around 1740. Handel was on the verge of abandoning the ora-torio form in the summer of 1741 when the Duke of Devonshire, the English governor of Ireland, unexpectedly invited him to visit Dublin and give concerts benefiting local hospitals and chari-ties. Messiah and Samson was the result and, with these two popular works, Handel’s career as an oratorio composer was revived.

Handel’s collaborator was Charles Jennens, a wealthy, well-educated English gentleman 15 years younger than the composer. Although Jennens was educated as a lawyer, he denied himself a legal career because he was reluctant to take the required oath of allegiance to the German-oriented House of Hanover occu-

pying the British throne. Among other things, he passed his time assisting Handel in assembling texts for several oratorios, both before and after Messiah.

Handel scholar Jens Peter Larsen sum-marizes Messiah’s three-part division as: 1) the prophecy of Christ’s coming; 2) the redemption of humanity through the sacrifice of Jesus, set against a background of human rejection and opposition to the will of God; 3) a song of thanks-giving for the overthrow of death. In brief terms, the three sections relate to the Christian obser-vances of Advent/Christmas, Good Friday/Easter and Pentecost.

The opening Christmas portion of the ora-torio is suffused with a pastoral feeling. There is a gently caressing quality to the melodic and rhythmic profile of the opening tenor aria, “Comfort ye,” a trusting innocence to the musi-cal character of the chorus, “For unto us a child is born,” and a light, feathery sound in the florid theme of the choral fugue, “And he shall purify.” Even the alto aria and chorus, “O thou that tell-est good tidings to zion,” attains a gently lilt-ing quality by virtue of the easygoing 6/8 meter underlying the rhythm of that movement.

But when Christ’s birth and good will toward men have been duly celebrated, the mood changes abruptly. Part Two opens with a heavy heart, as the tonality turns suddenly to F minor and the chorus sings the treading dotted rhythms of “Surely, he hath borne our griefs” and the angular lines of the choral fugue, “And with his stripes we are healed.”

Other sentiments force their way into Handel’s drama of human redemption. The chorus, “All we, like sheep, have gone astray,” paints a picture of a distracted populace, deaf to the voice of God and heedless of his message. The piece is famous for its little running melody lines that seem to wander aimlessly like the sheep mentioned in the text.

In depicting the mockery of the babbling crowd at the foot of Christ’s cross, Handel chooses a pompous choral fugue for the psalm text, “He trusted in God that he would deliver him, if he delight in him.” The cynicism of their laughter is heightened by the guffawing fugue in the low, heavy bass section of the choir.

After grieving over the utter rejection and abandonment of the crucified Lord, the tenor turns to the central message of Christianity in the solo aria, “But Thou didst not leave his soul in hell.” The hopeful message of resurrection and redemption is carried on for several numbers, through the joyously animated chorus, “The Lord gave the word,” and the chorus, “Their sound is gone out,” where the choral voices spread out in all directions.

The bass voice depicts righteous anger at warring humans in the solo aria, “Why do the nations rage so furiously together?” The verb

of that text is key to Handel’s inspiration for the “rage” aria typical of traditional baroque opera. It is the most operatic piece in the oratorio and, together with the more famous bass aria, “The trumpet shall sound” in Part Three of Messiah, this challenging piece requires a powerful, technically nimble bass voice.

Rage is also the dominant emotion in the intense tenor aria, “Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron.” All of these arias depict God as the Old Testament deity of power and ven-geance rather than the New Testament deity of forgiveness and redemption. Similarly, Handel stands in awe of divine omnipotence when anger turns to triumph in two famous choruses: “Lift up your heads, O ye gates” in Part Two, and the exultant “Hallelujah” chorus that concludes that section of the oratorio.

With the drama of redemption essentially completed by the end of Part Two, the mood changes to one of consolation and gratitude in Part Three. It opens with the lyrical soprano aria, “I know that my redeemer liveth,” and the gentle, poised character of that aria is typical of Handel’s treatment of the solo soprano voice in Messiah. The direct chordal style of “Worthy is the Lamb,” introduces the oratorio’s intended choral climax. As this number progresses, the composer again turns to fugal devices, both in the martial setting of “Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto him,” and in the swelling “Amen” chorus that follows.

Charles Hausmann, directorDr. Charles S. Hausmann has led the Houston Symphony Chorus since 1986 and has prepared the group for more than 500 concerts and more than 40 acclaimed conductors, including Hans Graf, Christoph Eschenbach, Claus Peter Flor and Robert Shaw. His extensive repertoire includes most of the major choral/orchestral masterworks.

As director of choral studies and profes-sor of conducting at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, Hausmann directs the master’s and doctoral programs in choral con-ducting and conducts the Moores School Choral Artists, a graduate chamber choir. He also serves as director of choral music at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.

During the 2010-2011 season, Hausmann prepares the Chorus for Verdi’s Requiem, special concert with Andrea Bocelli, Very Merry Pops, Messiah and Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky.

Hausmann frequently appears as a guest conductor, lecturer and clinician, and has conducted numerous tours throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. He led the Chorus’ fourth European tour in 2007 and he and the Chorus share a 23-year collabora-tion with Mexico City’s Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, recently performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah with former Associate Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto.

For audition information, contact the Chorus manager at (713) 444-91 or [email protected].

Celebrating Milestones This month’s performances of Very Merry Pops mark two major milestones for the Chorus: its 1,000th concert and its 900th performance with the Houston Symphony. The Chorus has inde-pendently performed in regular concerts with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Mineria (Mexico City), a BBC Proms concert (London) and a capella concerts here in Houston.

The all-volunteer Chorus was founded in 1946 by former Symphony cellist Al Urbach. An important instrument in the Symphony family, the Chorus performs in many musical styles this season; from the backstage women’s chorus in the final minutes of Holst’s The Planets, to the thundering chords of the “Dies Irae” in Verdi’s Requiem, and this month’s seasonal sounds of Very Merry Pops and Handel’s Messiah.

Congratulations to the Chorus on its long record of musical excellence!

Artistic excellence, strong leadership, robust ticket sales and growing philanthropic support are vital, but they alone cannot guarantee the Houston Symphony’s future. To do so, its endowment must be increased. My Houston, My Symphony: Campaign for a Sound Future has two major goals: add $60 million to the Symphony’s endowment and raise $15 million in working capital. We are proud to recognize those who have already made commitments to this campaign and invite others to join them as we build an artistically and financially sound Houston Symphony.

Backstage Pass...................................................................................................

Anthony Prisk, trumpet

Birthplace: Lombard, IL, a suburb of Chicago

Education: University of Illinois, BM; McGill University, MM

Joined the Houston Symphony: June 2002

Favorite Musical Moment: The orchestra invited James Thompson (former principal trumpet of the Montreal and Altanta Symphonies) to join us on the UK tour. His recording of Stravinsky’s Fireworks particularly inspired me while in school, so it was surreal playing that piece with him on tour. He happens to be a car guy too, so I took him to a car show while he was in Houston!

Beginnings: I began at age 9 in 4th grade. My twin brother wanted to play cornet/trumpet, and I wanted to play clarinet; we tried them and couldn’t make a sound. So, we switched and violá!

Earliest musical memory: My dad plays a few tunes on the organ and accordion at every family function. It never gets old – really!

Discovering my vocation: I wanted to be a band director, but my mentor, Ray Sasaki, encouraged me to pursue a performance degree. My dad was relieved when I won my first job!

Best thing about being a musician: Holiday shopping! Kidding…I love playing music and I feel fortunate to do it for a living. It is a constant challenge, and I continue to learn daily. We go through a large amount of repertoire in a short period of time, so my plate is always full!

Alternate reality: My childhood dream was to be a race car driver, so I started racing as a hobby. I really enjoy getting out on the track and letting loose; it keeps me fresh and recharged!

Favorite performance piece: I enjoy Richard Strauss tone poems, Mahler symphonies and the symphonic works of Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.

Musical inspiration: I am inspired by opera singers and jazz musicians. Listening to recordings of my favorite tenor, Jussi Bjorling, inspires me to play in a much more lyrical and projecting way. I also admire jazz musicians for their ability to improvise complex and beautiful phrases. The freedom they have to share their musical voice is inspiring.

Current listening: Tito Puente! I love the Latin rhythms and his horn sec-tions! The energy and positive vibes I get from Latin music excites me!

Keeping it fresh: When playing the trumpet feels like a job, it’s time to do something else for awhile. I’ll run, work out, work on my car, race on a free weekend, or watch movies and TV shows. When I start to get restless, I know it’s time to pick up the horn again…trumpet calls!

Finding the perfect instrument: I’m still looking. My playing is con-stantly evolving, and the definition of the perfect instrument changes with that evolution.

Robert and Nancy Peiser, musician sponsors

Birthplace: Nancy: Oklahoma City; Bob: New york

Education: Nancy earned bachelors and masters degrees at the University of Arkansas; Bob received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and his MBA from Harvard University.

Beginnings: Bob became involved with the Board five years ago and now chairs the Audience Development and Marketing Executive Committees, and serves on the Finance Executive Committee. Nancy joined the League Board last year and chairs its Annual Fund Committee.

Earliest musical memory: Bob: playing accordion at age eight; then piano and a single snare drum. Nancy: accomplished pianist who started playing at age 5. When she had a good lesson, her reward was getting to play her teacher’s harp.

All in the family: Nancy’s mother was a very talented pianist who played with various groups in Dallas. Two of Nancy’s brothers play the guitar (one professionally) and piano. Bob’s three sons played instru-ments (clarinet, trumpet and saxophone), and his daughter played the clarinet through college and with community organizations outside of Boston afterward.

Current listening: Both have been studiously listening to a course on the history of Great Music: 48 45-minutes lectures from ancient music to modern times. We enjoy all types of music, but are a bit hung up with music from the 1960s.

Looking forward to in the 010-011 Season: Bob has always loved Scheherazade; Both are looking forward to the Tony Bennett Pops con-cert.

Favorite symphony experi-ences: Relaxing and listening to all the music; interacting with all the wonderful people who help out, including musi-cians and volunteers. It’s quite a wonderful family.

Pastime and good company: Going on eight grandchildren keep us busy! We ski quite a bit in the winter and enjoy golf in the cooler summers at our home in Park City, Utah. We also travel extensively. Nancy enjoys gardening and professionally helps children with learning disabilities.

Became Musician Sponsors: August 2008

Meeting your musician: We met Tony at a Symphony dinner.

All for a reason: It’s a wonderful way to enjoy beautiful music and growing friendships.

Pass it on: Sponsoring a musician is a fantastic opportunity to help someone with a talent that is inspiring to watch.
