Hans Graf Biography..........................................................................................

Known for his wide range of repertoire and creative programming, distinguished Austrian conductor Hans Graf—the Houston

Symphony’s 15th Music Director—is one of today’s most highly respected musicians. He began his tenure here on Opening Night of the 2001-2002 season.

Prior to his appointment in Houston, he was music director of the Calgary Philharmonic, the Orchestre

National Bordeaux Aquitaine, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra

and the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra.

A frequent guest with all of the major North American

orchestras, Graf has devel-oped a close relationship with

the Boston Symphony and appears regularly with the orchestra during the sub-

scription season and at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Houston Symphony in

January 2006 and returned leading the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in March 2007. He and the Houston Symphony were invited to appear at Carnegie Hall in January 2010 to present the New York premiere of The Planets—An HD Odyssey and will return on May 5, 2012.

Internationally, Graf conducts in the foremost concert halls of Europe,

Japan and Australia. In October 2010, he led the Houston Symphony on a tour of the UK to present the international premiere of The Planets—An HD Odyssey, a project that has been picked up by the Cleveland, Seattle and Sydney Symphony Orchestras. He has participated in the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Bregenz, Aix en Provence and Salzburg Festivals. In summer 2010, he conducted the opening concert of the Aspen Music Festival and returned to Tanglewood and Chicago’s Grant Park Festival. He returns to Tanglewood and the Cleveland Orchestra Blossom Festival this summer.

An experienced opera conductor, Graf first conducted the Vienna State Opera in 1981 and has since led productions in the opera houses of Berlin, Munich, Paris and Rome, including several world premieres. Recent engagements include Parsifal at the Zürich Opera and Boris Godunov at the Opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg.

Born in 1949 near Linz, Graf studied violin and piano as a child. He earned diplomas in piano and conducting from the Musikhochschule in Graz and continued his studies with Franco Ferrara, Sergiu Celibidache and Arvid Jansons. His career was launched in 1979 when he was awarded first prize at the Karl Böhm Competition.

His extensive discography includes recordings with the Houston Symphony, available through houstonsymphony.org: works by Bartók and Stravinsky, Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony, Berg’s Three Pieces from the Lyric Suite and a DVD of The Planets—An HD Odyssey.

Graf has been awarded the Chevalier de l’ordre de la Legion d’Honneur by the French government for championing French music around the world and the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria.

Hans and Margarita Graf have homes in Salzburg and Houston. They have one daughter, Anna, who lives in Vienna.

From the Orchestra............................................................................................

On behalf of my fellow musicians, welcome to the Houston Symphony. July in Houston is an excellent time to be indoors, and we’re happy to welcome you to our summer concerts in beautiful (and air con-ditioned!) Jones Hall. This month the orchestra will present a variety of concerts spanning the entire range of what a modern orchestra can offer: from Mendelssohn’s stirring Scottish Symphony for the Houston Chronicle Dollar Concert, a perennial sell-out, to music for rock bands, video games, movies and even Bugs Bunny!

It is interesting to see an increasing number of pop and rock musicians incorporating orchestral instruments and sounds into their works. It seems that their natural desire to broaden their range of sounds and expressive possibilities leads them to seek out classical instruments, and the two genres, once rigidly segregated, are intersecting to provide fertile creative ground. Most classical musicians today grow up knowing and enjoying rock and popular music, and many devoted rock and pop audi-ences are surprised to find how much they enjoy hearing classical symphonic sounds and music.

It can sometime seem that classical music is isolated from much of modern culture, but a closer look shows that, even if the concert-going experience is unfamiliar to many, the symphony is part of our daily lives in ways we hardly notice. As you will hear when we perform The Lord of the Rings score with the film, the symphony orchestra has been an integral part of almost all of our most beloved movies. From Erich Korngold to John Williams to Howard Shore, when movie composers want to move our emo-tions, they compose new “classical” music.

As we will see with Distant Worlds: music of FINAL FANTASY, when a video game strives to go beyond simply providing an adrenaline boost and aims to reach our deeper emotions, skilled video game composers also compose new works that follow in the classic traditions.

And, of course, many of us have a special place in our hearts for Bugs Bunny! The Warner Brothers animation studio of that era was a place of genius, and they loved incorporating popular classical works into many of their cartoons. Many of us in the orchestra developed our first love of classical music watching Bugs Bunny play Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody and Elmer Fudd sing “Kill de Wabbit!” to the music of Wagner. If you catch us smiling onstage, you’ll know why! Enjoy the concert.

The order of this evening’s program will be announced from the stage. There will be one intermission.

The Houston Symphony currently records under its own label, Houston Symphony Media Productions, and for Naxos. Houston Symphony recordings also are available on the Telarc, RCA Red Seal, Virgin Classics and Koch International Classics labels.

Biographies...................................................................HavensBrent Havens, conductorBerklee-trained arranger/conductor Brent Havens has written music for orchestras, fea-ture films and television networks including ABC, CBS, ESPN and ABC Family Channel. In addition to his Houston Symphony appear-ances, orchestral collaborations have included those with the Cincinnati and Indianapolis sym-phony orchestras, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Baltimore and San Diego sympho-nies, among others. He recently worked with the Doobie Brothers and the Milwaukee Symphony, arranging and conducting the combined group for Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Birthday Party Finale attended by more than 150,000 fans.

Havens scored the film Quo Vadis, a Premier Pictures remake of Gladiator (1956). In 2010, he conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London presenting Windborne Productions’ Music of The Doors, along with original Doors members Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger, to London and Dublin audi-ences. In addition to the Music of The Doors, Havens is arranger/guest conductor for five additional symphonic rock programs: the Music of Led Zeppelin, the Music of Pink Floyd, the Music of The Eagles, the Music of Queen and the Music of Michael Jackson.

Brody Dolyniuk, vocalistEven as a child, Brody Dolyniuk mimicked voices as he listened to old records and tapes. He is a gifted, self-taught musician who plays several instruments and has a particular knack for cap-turing the voices and mannerisms of classic characters from music, TV and movies.

His first professional gigs were at piano

bars around the country. There he learned to charm audiences and expand his musical reper-toire. Longing to perform the music of the many rock bands that inspired him, Dolyniuk assem-bled Yellow Brick Road (YBR), unquestionably Las Vegas’ most successful classic rock band. Since 1997, YBR has been reshaping the casino entertainment scene by bringing a rock concert atmosphere to showrooms previously reserved for Top-40-style lounge acts. Along the way, he has made numerous radio and TV appearances, earned a spot in the finals of two national sing-ing competitions and self-produced several large rock production-style shows using multi-media, lasers, comedy and special effects.

In 2007, he sang several tracks on the mega-hit video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and has performed several more for the new Konami game Rock Revolution. As a devout classic rock fan, Dolyniuk’s enthusiasm, vocal ability and on-stage energy are the per-fect fit for The Music of The Who.

The Music of The Who Windborne Music presents its brand new show, The Music of The Who.

Formed in 1964 in a small suburb of London, England, The Who quickly climbed the rock charts and became one of the premiere rock bands of all time, selling nearly 100 mil-lion albums. The popularity of albums such as Tommy, Quadrophenia, Who’s Next, Who Are You and others—which garnered them 17 Top Ten albums, 18 Gold, 12 Platinum and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the U.S. alone—firmly planted The Who in rock and roll lore.

Singer Brody Dolyniuk and conductor Brent Havens lead the Houston Symphony through a classic night of The Who performed as you’ve never heard it before. Staged with a rock band, the Houston Symphony and pre-sented with rock lighting, it’s a special night of rock and roll.

OVERTuRE TO DON GIOVANNI, K.57Wolfgang Amadè Mozart

Born: Jan 27, 1756, Salzburg, Austria

Died: Dec 5, 1791, Vienna, Austria

Work composed: 1787

Recording: Sir Colin Davis conducting the Dresden Staatskapelle (Philips)

Instrumentation: pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets, timpani and strings

None of Mozart’s mature operas have fasci-nated listeners and scholars more than his mas-terly musico-dramatic portrait of the title role in Don Giovanni. Though Mozart labeled his opera “drama giocoso,” the Spanish nobleman’s sexual depravity is the subject of dark, vicious humor, sometimes considered a mask for a personality disorder. The psychological nuances so keenly drawn in Mozart’s operatic score are powerfully foretold in the shafts of light and shadow that flicker throughout the opera’s overture.

Few of Mozart’s works are composed in minor keys, and his use of D minor as the tone color for this tale of hellish punishment for the unrepentant Giovanni’s misdeeds recalls other works where D minor evokes a sense of fury and reprisal. Notable among them is Mozart’s Requiem. Even in the purely abstract D minor Piano Concerto (No. 20, K.466), there are expres-sions of urgency in the music that might easily be equated with unyielding recrimination, were it a piece of dramatic music.

Mozart cast the overture in a fully devel-oped sonata form, with the stern opening chords prophesying the searing threats made by the statue of the dead Commander in the final act, as it brings eternal punishment for his slaying by Giovanni. The tonality turns to a bright D major for the presentation of several engaging themes during the main body of the exposition, but major and minor keys engage in an uneasy competition for attention during the development section.

In staged performances of the opera, the restatement of all the themes moves directly on to the first recitative and aria by Giovanni’s squire, Leporello. But, anticipating performances of the overture alone, Mozart composed a sepa-rate concert ending with bright brassy chords.

VARIATIONS ON A ROCOCO THEME FOR CELLO AND ORCHESTRA, OPuS 33Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Born: May 7, 1840, Votkinsk, Russia

Died: Nov 6, 1893, St. Petersburg, Russia

Work composed: 1876

Recording: Mischa Maisky with Giuseppe Sinopoli and the Philharmonia Orchestra (Deutsche Grammophon)

Instrumentation: pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns, and strings

Notes.....................................................................................................................................................

Page 17: Houston Symphony Magazine July 2011

July 2011 13

Tchaikovsky’s famed Rococo Variations were dedicated to (and presumably commissioned by) 28-year-old cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, a promi-nent German-born performer who had become professor of cello at the Moscow Conservatory.

The theme is an original melody that simulates an 18th-century feeling in its strong Haydnesque pulse and its strict division into two halves. Tchaikovsky paid further homage to Classical Era practice in scoring the work for a small orchestra. He also imitated a standard 18th-century ground plan where each varia-tion is slightly more florid than the last, with a centrally located minor-mode variation as a temporary break in the plan. Fitzenhagen re-ordered the sequence of the variations, upset-ting the plan somewhat, but apparently gained the advantage of ending the work with a strong, climactic variation.

So much for Tchaikovsky’s debt to the 18th century. The beautiful lyricism of the melodic line, the vivid harmony and crystalline orches-tration, so strong in contrasting tone colors, give the music a unique Tchaikovskian person-ality. Certainly, no one but Tchaikovsky could have composed the expansive “valse triste” which Fitzenhagen placed as the third varia-tion. Also, the theme and all of the variations end with an intriguing little codetta that serves as a bridge to the next movement. You might call it Tchaikovsky’s answer to the Promenade linking certain movements in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, written just two years before the Rococo Variations.

SyMPHONy NO. 3 IN A MINOR, OPuS 56 (SCOTTISH)Felix Mendelssohn

Born: Feb 3, 1809, Hamburg, Germany

Died: Nov 4, 1847, Leipzig, Germany

Work composed: 1842

Recording: Kurt Masur conducting the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (Apex)

Instrumentation: pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, timpani, strings

The 1829 visit to the British Isles that inspired Felix Mendelssohn to compose his famed Hebrides Overture also inspired the beginnings of his A minor Symphony. The composer and a group of friends visited Scotland, including the abbey of Holyrood and the ruined chapel where Mary Stuart was crowned Queen of Scotland. “Everything is broken and the bright sky shines in,” Mendelssohn wrote to his family. “I believe I found today in that old chapel the beginning of my Scotch Symphony.”

However, Mendelssohn’s travels continued on to Italy, inspiring the famed Italian Symphony. He did not complete his A minor Symphony for another 13 years. That made it the last of his five

mature symphonies to be finished, although it is labeled No. 3 according to the order in which Mendelssohn’s symphonies were published. (Incidentally, although his letters referred to the work as his “Scotch” Symphony, he never wrote that label or the term “Scottish” on the manu-script of the completed score.)

Like the Italian Symphony, the A minor Symphony is very tightly organized, with all four movements written in sonata form. This includes the Scherzo, which has a development sec-tion in place of the customary Trio at its center. Mendelssohn’s placement of the Scherzo as the second, rather than the third movement was also

Notes.....................................................................................................................................................

slightly novel, although this order had been used by Schumann, Beethoven and Haydn.

Of great significance was his effort to link all four movements with virtually no break, building upon experiments by Schumann and Beethoven. The return of the slow introductory theme at the end of the first movement is also noteworthy. Beyond that, Mendelssohn tightened thematic relationships throughout the symphony.

While there are no specific descriptive implications to the music, some commentators have noted a bit of “Charlie is My Darlin’” tied onto the highland-fling theme of the Scherzo.

Bugs BunnyBugs Bunny is one of the most recognized cartoon characters in the world, whose sig-nature phrase “What’s up, Doc?” has long since entered the English language.

Bugs’ first “reel” appearance in front of his soon-to-be-adoring public was in A Wild Hare directed by Tex Avery. Since then, Bugs’ zany antics in hundreds of cartoon favor-ites have made him a legend throughout the world.

This cool, collected, carrot-chomping rabbit is the unequivocal superstar of the Looney Tunes family. With never a “hare” out of place, he always manages to outsmart his adversaries, whomever they may be. He’s a real American icon who has graced the TV and cinema screens the world over.

Bugs Bunny’s cartoons have twice been nominated for Academy Awards, and his “Knighty Knight Bugs” won a coveted Oscar. Bugs has starred in four films, in addition to his hundreds of animated shorts and 21 primetime television specials.

David Ka Lik Wong, executive producerBugs Bunny at the Symphony Executive Producer David Ka Lik Wong received an Emmy Award for his work with George Daugherty as principal producer on the animation and live-action Peter and The Wolf, starring Kirstie Alley, Lloyd Bridges, Sleepless In Seattle’s Ross Malinger and the new animated char-acters of legendary animation director Chuck Jones. He was nominated for an Emmy as producer of Rhythm & Jam, the ABC series of Saturday morning music education specials for children and was senior producer for the Warner Bros. documentary film The Magical World of Chuck Jones, directed by Daugherty and starring interviews by Steven Spielberg, Whoopi Goldberg, George Lucas and Ron Howard, among others. He also was writer, executive producer and story editor of the Emmy Award-winning PBS/Sesame workshop series Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat.

Wong has produced the Warner Bros. touring production Bugs Bunny on Broadway since 1991, as it has toured the world, and is now executive producer of its sequel, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony. He produced the audio CD album for both projects. He has produced innovative symphony orchestra concerts for leading orchestras, including the National and San Francisco symphonies, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles and Royal philharmonics, the Sydney Opera House and many others, plus galas on London’s West End.

Calloway’s new EP, Chasin the Sun, has already won 12 Detroit Music Awards, climbed to No. 37 on the R&R Charts and is spinning on Top 40, Hot AC and Pandora radio. Uncommon for a new artist, she had placed songs on hit TV shows like Dawson’s Creek, Summerland and One Tree Hill before releasing her current EP. Chasin the Sun, was produced by Gerard Smerek, who has produced projects for Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, R. Kelly and Kid Rock. While Smerek has proven to be an incredible resource for Calloway, the singer sets herself apart from many singer-songwriters by literally writing everything her-self: lyrics, melodies, chord changes, harmo-nies, bridges and arrangements. Her graceful, yet commanding voice caught the attention of Grammy® award-winning conductor Arnie Roth and FINAL FANTASY composer Nobuo Uemtasu. She was asked to sing on “Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY.” She beautifully performed “Memoro De La Stono,” sang with the orches-tra on the Distant Worlds Tour and was asked to sing on “Distant Worlds II: music from FINAL FANTASY,” performing, “Melodies of Life” and the very popular, “Suteki Da Ne.” In addition to appearing with the “Distant Worlds” tour, Calloway is in the studio working on new songs to be released later this summer. He has achieved global recognition for his work on the FINAL FANTASY series that has been per-formed by world-class orchestras around the world. Uematsu has been recognized as a major contributor in the increasing appreciation and awareness of video game music. A prime example is the FINAL FANTASY VIII theme song, “Eyes on Me,” which he composed and pro-duced. His song featured Hong Kong pop star Faye Wong and sold a record 400,000 copies. It also won Song of the Year (Western Music) at the 14th Annual Japan Gold Disc Awards in 1999, the first time that music from a video game had attained this illustrious honor. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingOriginal score composed by Howard Shore

Composer Howard Shore brings J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary imagination to vivid life with his Academy® and Grammy® Award-winning score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Shore’s music expresses Peter Jackson’s film as an immense symphonic work—a uniquely developed vision drawn from centuries of stylistic tendencies.

The music of The Lord of the Rings is counted among film music’s most complex and comprehensive works. This unique performance sets the score to the film, but allows the music to bear the narrative weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic live concert experience.

Shore’s score not only captures Fellowship’s sweeping emotion, thrilling vistas and grand journeys, but also echoes the very construction of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Styles, instruments and performers collected from around the world provide each of Tolkien’s cultures with a unique musi-cal imprint. The rural and simple hobbits are rooted in a dulcet weave of Celtic tones. The mystical Elves merit ethereal Eastern colors. The Dwarves, Tolkien’s abrasive stonecut-ters, receive columns of parallel harmo-nies and a rough, guttural male chorus. The industrialized hordes of Orcs claim Shore’s most violent and percussive sounds—includ-ing Japanese taiko drums, metal bell plates and chains beaten upon piano wires—while the world of Men, flawed yet noble heirs of Middle-earth, is introduced with stern and searching brass figures. In operatic fashion, these musical worlds commingle, sometimes combining forces for a culminated power, other times violently clashing, and always bending to the will of the One Ring and its own ominous family of themes.

The music’s vast scope calls for sym-phony orchestra, mixed chorus, boys chorus, and instrumental and vocal soloists singing in the Tolkien-crafted languages of Quenya, Sindarin, Khuzdûl, Adûnaic, Black Speech, as well as English. Original folk songs stand alongside diatonic hymns, knots of polyph-ony, complex tone clusters and seething, dissonant aleatoric passages. Shore’s writ-ing assumes an earthy, grounded tone built on sturdy orchestral structures and a sense of line that is at once fluid yet stripped of frivolous ornamentation.

Howard Shore says, “This is the first time that the complete score to The Fellowship of the Ring will be performed live to projection in Houston. My first score for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, was the beginning of my journey into the world of Tolkien, and I will always

Hamauzu debuted as an individual artist by writ-ing the score for Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon (1997), Saga Frontier 2 (1999), Saga Unlimited (2002), Dirge of Cerberus, Final Fantasy VII (2006), but what gained him fame was the soundtrack for Final Fantasy XIII.

Charles Hausmann, directorDr. Charles S. Hausmann was named director of the Houston Symphony Chorus in 1986. He has prepared the group for more than 600 concerts, led them on numerous tours to Mexico and Europe, and worked with more than 40 acclaimed conductors including Hans Graf, Christoph Eschenbach, Claus Peter Flor and Robert Shaw. His extensive repertoire includes most of the major choral/orchestral masterworks.

As director of graduate choral studies and professor of conducting at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music since 1985, Hausmann supervises the master’s and doc-toral programs in choral conducting, teaches choral conducting and literature and conducts the Moores School Choral Artists—a graduate chamber choir.

An active church musician, he has con-ducted church choirs in Colorado, Kentucky, New Jersey and Texas. He currently serves as Director of Choral Music at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston where he led the Houston Symphony and Chorus in a perfor-mance of Mendelssohn’s St. Paul (spring 2008).

Hausmann frequently appears as a guest conductor, lecturer, clinician and soloist. He led the Chorus on its fourth European tour in 2007, appearing as guest conductor during the Prague Spring Festival. He and the Chorus share a 24-year collaboration with Mexico City’s Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, recently performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah with former Houston Symphony Associate Conductor, Carlos Miguel Prieto.

This season, Hausmann prepares the Chorus for Beethoven’s Choral, A Very Merry Pops, Handel’s Messiah, and Orff’s Carmina Burana among others.

Support the Houston Symphony Chorus EndowmentThe Houston Symphony Chorus Endowment supports activities that enrich Houston’s musi-cal life and enhance the high professional stan-dards of the all-volunteer Chorus.
