How do I set up and use Turnitin rubrics?

This guide will take you through the process of setting up a Turnitin rubric which you can then use to enhance and enrich the feedback given to students. Although it is possible to use Turnitin rubrics to generate grades, we do not currently recommend doing this, so this guide will deal only with qualitative rubrics designed for feedback enhancement purposes.

Please note that Turnitin rubrics will be available for students to see before they submit their assignments, so may be useful in helping students to produce work which is more effectively aligned with the marking criteria. Additionally, effective use of rubrics may help to improve scores in the ‘Assignment and feedback’ section of the National Student Survey, especially question 5, ‘The criteria used in marking have been clear in advance’.

1. Setting up your rubric and attaching it to your assignment When you initially set up a Turnitin submission point you will be given the option to attach an existing Turnitin rubric or to create a new rubric. If you did not attach a rubric when you initially set up the submission point you can still add a rubric to an existing submission point.

In order to use rubrics you will need to be familiar with the process of setting up and modifying Turnitin submission points, as set out in the following guides: How do I set up a Turnitin submission point and How do I check or change the settings on a Turnitin submission point

To use a rubric, open the Optional settings menu of your Turnitin submission point.

If you have not created a Turnitin rubric before, or if you want to create a new rubric or modify an existing rubric, choose Launch Rubric Manager from the GradeMark section of the Optional settings menu. If you have already created the Turnitin rubric that you want to use, simply choose it from the drop-down list and click Submit.

2. Using the Rubric Manager for the first time When you launch the Rubric Manager, you will be able to create your first rubric.

2.1 When the rubric manager opens for the first time you will see a message saying that no rubric has been selected.

3. Adding content to a rubric

3.1 Setting up the column headers You can have as many or as few columns as needed, and how you set out your rubric is entirely up to you. As a guide, we recommend six columns for undergraduate rubrics, and five for postgraduate rubrics. Grades as column headers are not recommended – something along the following lines is preferable: Undergraduate Rubric: Excellent; Very Good; Good; Pass; Fail; No Evidence Postgraduate Rubric: Excellent; Good; Pass; Fail; No Evidence

To name a column, simply click into the header area and type the name that you want.

To add a new column, click on the Add Column button.

To delete a column, move your mouse into the column header area and click on the dustbin icon.

3.2 Setting up the row headers There are two fields in the row header, one for the row title, and one for the row description. Click into the corresponding row header areas to add this information.

To add a new row, click on the Add Row button.

To delete a row, move your mouse into the row header area and click on the dustbin icon.

3.3 Adding the descriptions to the rubric Once the rows and columns are set up, all that is required is to add the descriptions to the rubric. This is done by clicking into each of the rubric boxes and typing in the descriptions.

Your finished rubric will then look something like this:

Save and Close the rubric when you’re done. You will then be returned to the GradeMark section of the Turnitin submission point setup screen.

3.4 Your rubric will now appear in the drop-down list Choose your rubric, and click Submit to complete the process. Please note that once a rubric has been attached to an assignment it cannot be edited or deleted. If you need to edit the rubric, it must be detached from every assignment that it has been attached to. However, you can make copies of any rubric, and these copies can be edited.

4. Using the rubric when grading and feeding back on the assignment.

4.1 Access the rubric from the Turnitin Document Viewer by clicking on the view/edit rubric button Feedback on the assignment in the normal way using the QuickMarks. Then add your rubric scores and general comments and/or voice comments.

6. Useful features of rubrics You can have as many Turnitin rubrics as you want, and you can also use the same rubric on multiple assignments, so you don’t necessarily have to create a new rubric for every assignment.

You can also access the Turnitin Rubric Manager from the Turnitin Document Viewer.

Additionally, using the Turnitin Rubric Manager, as well as creating new rubrics you can: 1. Duplicate existing rubrics. This allows you to create a new rubric from an existing rubric meaning that you don’t have to build every new rubric from scratch. 2. Detach and attach rubric. This allows you to detach the rubric from the assignment that you are currently viewing, or attach the current rubric to the current assignment if no rubric is already attached. 3. Import and export rubrics. This allows you to share your rubrics with colleagues.
