THE CHALLENGE

They needed help to achieve their resource recovery

targets at a minimum cost and investment.

Northern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (NSROC) faces increased waste disposal issues from a growing population and a decrease in availability of

disposal sites.

THE SOLUTION

•  Short term competitive landfill solution.

•  An increase in the capacity of the Woodlawn Mechanical Biological Treatment (WoMBaT) facility to process 35% of NSROC’s waste.

•  Development of a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) from residues to deliver a future energy from waste solution.

•  Disposal of remaining waste to Woodlawn’s bioreactor for additional energy recovery and to minimise overall costs.

HOW WE DO IT Being open and honest.

Reduction of current waste disposal costs are

achieved with a short term landfill solution. Treating only the minimum tonnages required over

the life of the contract.

Achieving more diversion per treated tonne by delivering an RDF solution on the residual waste.

And taking a few risks …(understanding the

consequences).

•  Annual savings of up to $2 million through efficiencies.

•  Reduced procurement costs of each council.

•  Cuts ‘red tape’ through a single point of management between NSROC and Veolia.

•  Achieving the NSW Government target of 70% of total municipal waste diverted from landfill.

•  Incremental investment in already planned new technology

•  Converting waste into resources; compost and refuse derived fuel.

•  A long term sustainable solution for council waste and a long term commitment to our Woodlawn investment.
