How does the Skins promo trailer create representation of

young people?

This skins promo trailer

represents young people in a

very irresponsible way, full of

drugs, sex, alcohol and loud

music.

It is perhaps a little farfetched

but in general it is the

stereotypical view on

teenagers. The start of the

trailer is very happy and

upbeat, everyone is having a

great time and there is also a

bear leaping around. At about 40 seconds in, the music changes its tempo and strobe lights start

flashing and this changes the feeling of the atmosphere, then after this the party seems to

deteriorate and people begin to be violently sick everywhere, fights begin, tears start to flow and it’s

getting near the end of night and people start to fall asleep. It ends with the main characters of the

series falling onto a bed together.

The editing of this is extremely fast with shots only a few seconds long, and throughout the 1:06

minute long trailer it includes over 70 cuts. They are all short cuts with no transitions between them

and this appears to make the trailer feel

a lot faster and goes with the music very

well. The Gossip provided the song

‘Standing in the Way of Control’ and the

song is a loud and boisterous song which

goes with the promo brilliantly, as it’s the kind of song

which you can imagine people jumping around to and

tearing a place apart – which is what they are doing in the

video. The song is the only thing you can hear in the

advert, there is no diegetic sound.

Most of the shots in this are mid or close up and are mainly of teenagers kissing, drinking or taking

drugs.

There are a lot of props used in this very short sequence; a bear suit, water pistols, child’s tricycle,

foam, cream, drugs, drink, phones, strobe lights, a vase, fairy lights and glow sticks to name a few!

The advert is a little claustrophobic because it involves so many props and people and this adds to

the crowdedness of the party, and there are so many people it is just getting out of control!
