HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT

PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? Q2 - Dilraj Singh

Page 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups? NEW

In my opening scene the character of Kassim is playing the role of a hard working elderly business man with a very stressful life, as we used mise en scene to create connotations of what a typical business man would be like. For example he is bossy and aggressive when he tells the kids to get out of the space.

We wanted him to be a harsh and nasty business man so we made Kassim where a suit and tie so it looks like he has had a long bad day at work.

His costume represents his personality as on top everyone would assume he is nice and calm as he wears smart attire but underneath it all the he has major issues.

In our opening scene the role of Jerry and I are playing the role of ordinary school kids. We know that they are school kids as they are wearing typical school clothes such as jumper and trousers.

How ever I think some can say that they subverted the stereotype as normally school teenagers tend to like to argue back but in this case they listened straight away when Kassim told them to go.

In our opening scene the character of Muj conforms to the stereotype that most doctors are Asian as he is Asian himself. He is wearing a white lab coat so that the audience know he is representing a role a doctor.

The stereotypes I reinforced in my sequence is old business men through the outfit and behaviour. My character conformed to the stereotype that business men are angry, carless and strict. Also I played on the fact that he has come across a major problem and instead of talking to someone he is bottling up. This is the case with most men as they usually don’t want to open up about there problems and get help.

Another stereotype I included was the doctor. Most doctors are of a Asian background and aren’t very clear with their accent and that is why I think I conformed that stereotype.

I was trying to make the doctor seem as helpful as possible as in real movies they doctor is where the characters go to seek help and comfort, however in my movie my character doesn’t seek the help and bottles everything up.

Nick Cassidy plays the role of Sam in the film Man on the ledge. He is of a smart professional job. But as like my main character he is stubborn and wanted things done his way and wants everyone to answer to him which are normally stereotypes of elderly businessmen which is why I think my films main character conforms to that stereotype.

My film attracted to people my age as the actors where all around my age and the people around me. This meant that the reception was good as they audience can feel more involved with the character, as if you have characters of a age of what your primary audience is chances are you will gain their attention.

Comparing my actors to real actors I would say the main character was similar to Will Smith as he could play a guy with health issues and do well.
