I need to charge my motor?” The simple answer is it depends on how big the

motor is, how fast you want to charge it, and how long you want to run. with

that answer out of the way, let’s talk specifics.

The main components of even a simple solar panel system are panels, spacer

material, and motors. For a small 5hp motor, I recommend installing panels

around 3" square or slightly larger. Additional spacer layers can help smooth

out any wrinkles in the roads after install, but the larger the motor, the more

layers you need.

There’s also the question of whether to install the panels on the top or the

bottom of the motor. The bottom should help reduce the overall weight of the

motor, and the top should maximize cooling. The panels and spacer materials

all have efficiency specs. These specs may vary depending on the specs of

your particular motor.

For example, an older motor can usually get around 12% more power out of a

3" solar panel because the metal costs are slightly higher for the panel

covered with plastic. While about half the power is lost due to heat transfer

and losses through the windings of the rotor, the rest of it gets converted to

higher efficiency. So if you have an older 5hp motor that needs 14.4 Wh, your

panels and spacer material can output about 13.6 Wh.

Obviously, this number is just an estimate, and some power is lost in the

conversion process. You could even build your own solar panel test rig to get

a precise measurement. Once you decide on the specific solar panel

installed, there’s the matter of figuring out what size panels will work with the

weight and dimensions of your motor.

I like to eyeball the dimensions of a motor and determine at which spacing of

panels I am comfortable. If the spacing of panels is as small as 2.
