Victorias Energy Crisis.
2007: The Yallourn coal
mine collapsed. Repairs
were carried out, but the
DPI said it would be likely
to collapse again.
It collapsed in 2012.
In 2009/10: The Kevin
Rudd led Australian
Federal Government
allocated $2.425 billion in
its annual Budget towards
industrial scale carbon
capture and storage
projects [CCS], but failed
to bring it online. They
turned to Queensland
and coal seam gas.

Victorias Long History in Oil and Gas.
Woodside/Lakes Oil
1958/9 Lakes Oil drilling Co., were at
McLoughlins Beach drilling for 3-4
years.
In 1962 Lakes Oil/Woodside did the
groundwork for Esso/Mobil, but
Lakes/Oil/ Woodside withdrew when
it found it couldnt compete with the
larger corporation, it moved insteadto Western Australia. It abandoned
wells, which are still said to be
leaking gas.

Subsidence: Gippsland and the Gulf of
Mexico.
A 1970s oil and gas boomset the pace for explorationin the Bass Straight with allthe appropriate legislationin place and deep waterdrilling. Coal extraction inthe Latrobe Valley also tookplace. This has allegedlycaused depletion of ground
water and coastalsubsidence.

Correlations between mining, subsidence
and earthquakes.
Studies now show that in the Gulf of
Mexico constant deep water drilling
offshore has caused the land to subside
leaving the area vulnerable to hurricanes
Katrina was a category 5 storm; it was
followed a few weeks later by Hurricane
Rita. Had this taken place prior to drilling
the results would have been different.

Subsidence, Earthquakes and Fracking.
Two separate studies areproviding insights into theearth-shaking consequences ofthe gas extraction process
known as fracking. One in theUnited States and another inthe United Kingdom.
U.S. Geological Surveyseismologist William Ellsworthsaid geologists have noticed astrange increase in
earthquakes that seem man-made.
In Arkansas, dozens of earthquakes near wastewater disposal
sites related to the state's huge Fayetteville Shale deposit led theArkansas Oil and Gas Commission to shut down an existing
disposal site and issue a moratorium on the development of new
ones. Mother Jones May 2012.

So, does CSG cause subsidence and
earthquakes?
The way companies dispose of fracking waste can,
which means that other types of energy-related
activity that rely on fluid injectionenhanced oilrecovery, enhanced geothermal systems, carbon
capture and sequestrationalso have the potential to
cause quakes. The evidence suggests that we can addearthquakes to the growing list of CSG hazards,
alongside air pollution, tainted drinking water and
potentially outsized carbon emissions.

WORSE CASE SCENARIO.
On the 25th 2007 gas drilling on the Indonesian island
of Java triggered a "mud volcano" that killed 13 people and
has rendered four square miles (ten square kilometres) of
countryside uninhabitable for years.A report released by a team of British researchers said the
deadly upwelling began when an exploratory gas well
punched through a layer of volcanic rock 9,300 feet (2,800
meters) below the surface, allowing hot, high-pressurewater to escape. The accident was then called a volcanic
mud eruption, which leads people to believe it was a natural
eruption. [Richard A. Lovett National Geographic News].

Are we monitoring the earth sufficiently
before, during and after drawing
resources?
Adam Pascale,Head of Seismology at Engineering Solutions forMonitoring the Environment believes we should lookmore closely at the impacts of mining. He said:
Some human activities may alter the stress
distribution. When we change the stress distribution ina section of earth, we can alter the way that the earthreleases its stress.
