ProWormer flavoured tablet for large dogs contains 525mg febantel, 175mg pyrantel and 175mg praziquantel with a liver flavouring. Uses: For the treatment of the following gastrointestinal tapeworms and roundworms in adult dogs and puppies. Nematodes: Ascarids: Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina (adult and late immature forms). Hookworms: Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum (adults). Whipworms: Trichuris vulpis (adults). Cestodes: Tapeworms: Echinococcus spp., Taenia spp., Dipylidium caninum (adult and immature forms). Dosage and administration: The recommended dose rates are: 15mg/kg bodyweight febantel, 5mg/kg pyrantel (as embonate) and 5mg/kg praziquantel. For oral administration, the tablets can be given to the dog with or without food. No starvation is needed before or after treatment. To ensure administration of a correct dose, body-weight should be determined as accurately as possible. The dosing program should be established by the veterinary surgeon. Puppies should be treated at 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age. Thereafter they should be treated at 3 month intervals. It is advisable to treat the bitch at the same time as the puppies. For the control of Toxocara canis, nursing bitches should be dosed 2 weeks after giving birth and every two weeks until weaning. For routine worm control adult dogs should be treated every 3 months. For routine treatment a single dose is recommended. In the event of heavy roundworm infestation a repeat dose should be given after 14 days. If an infestation caused by Echinococcus (E. granulosus) is detected in dogs, a repetition of the treatment is recommended for safety purpose. Contra-indications, warnings, etc: Do not use in animals with a known sensitivity to the active ingredients or to any of the excipients. Parasite resistance to any particular class of anthelmintic may develop following frequent, repeated use of an anthelmintic of that class. Fleas serve as intermediate hosts for one common type of tapeworm – Dipylidium caninum. Tapeworm infestation may reoccur unless control of intermediate hosts such as fleas, mice etc. is undertaken. The product is not recommended for use in puppies of less than 3kg bodyweight. Use during pregnancy and lactation: Do not use in pregnant bitches during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. The product may be used during lactation. Interactions: Do not use simultaneously with piperazine, as the anthelmintic effects of pyrantel and piperazine may be antagonized. Plasma concentrations of praziquantel may be decreased by concomitant administration with drugs that increase the activity of cytochrome P-450 enzymes (e.g. dexamethasone, phenobarbital). Concurrent use with other cholinergic compounds can lead to toxicity. Overdose: In safety studies, single doses of 5 times (4 times in very young puppies) the recommended dose or greater gave rise to occasional vomiting. Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the medicinal product to animals: Wash hands after administration to the animal. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or the label to the physician. People with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients should avoid contact with the veterinary medicinal product. Any unused veterinary medicinal product or waste materials derived from such veterinary medicinal products should be disposed of in accordance with local requirements. For animal treatment only. Keep out of reach of children. Pharmaceutical precautions: This veterinary medicinal product does not require any special storage conditions. Return any halved tablet to the opened blister pack and use within 7 days. Worms and your dog

The importance of regular worming

Worms live in your dog’s intestines by attaching themselves to the gut wall and feeding on digested food or blood. There are many different types of worm that can infect your dog, including:

As well as infecting dogs, the roundworm Toxacara canis and the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus produce eggs which can also infect people.

Regular worming is therefore essential to eliminate worms from your pet and reduce worm eggs in the environment.

ProWormer™ fl avoured contains three active ingredients which have proven effi cacy against all commonly occurring species of intestinal worm found in UK dogs. It is also approved for use as part of the Pet Travel Scheme.

Puppies

Puppies commonly become infected with the roundworm Toxacara canis during pregnancy or when suckling milk. It is therefore important to worm puppies at the age of 2 weeks and every 2 weeks thereafter until they are 12 weeks old.

To prevent puppies from being re-infected during suckling, it is also advisable to treat the mother 2 weeks after she gives birth and then every 2 weeks until the puppies have been weaned.

Adult Dogs

Adult dogs should be treated every 3 months.

For routine treatment, a single dose is recommended. In the event of a heavy roundworm infestation, a repeat dose should be given after 14 days.

Fleas can transmit tapeworms to dogs, so regular fl ea treatment is also advisable to reduce the risk of re-infestation.

Roundworms

Roundworms These are thought to infect around 10% of adult dogs at any one time. Dogs can pick up roundworm eggs from the faeces of infected dogs or foxes. In addition, puppies can become infected during pregnancy or through their mother’s milk.

TapewormsTapeworms have the appearance of a segmented, fl attened ribbon and, in infected dogs, segments may be seen passing out into the faeces. Dogs can become infected by eating inadequately cooked meat or by accidently ingesting infected fl eas.

HookwormsAlthough small, hookworms have a large mouth containing teeth or ‘cutting plates’ which they use to slash the intestinal mucosa and feed off blood. Heavy infestations can cause diarrhoea and, in some cases, anaemia.

WhipwormsThese attach themselves to the large intestine and heavy infestations may cause bloody diarrhoea. Dogs become infected by ingesting whipworm eggs, which can survive in the environment for long periods.
