Wouldn't it be wonderful to spend 24 hours a day around horses, take
multiple horseback riding lessons and learn all about horses fast?
Well, you can do it if you attend a horseback riding camp. This is an
ideal way to learn riding and taking care of a horse within a very short
space of time.
What Happens at a Camp?
First, a horse is selected to be "your" horse, meaning sole responsibility
of the animal rests with you for the duration of your stay at the camp.
How to ride, in two daily riding lessons
How to handle, lead and groom your horse
You will become proficient at fundamental riding.
How to use and care for horse riding equipment
General anatomy of the horse, first aid for horses, and specific
nutritional necessities are also explained.
You may ask, "Is a camp right for me?" and, "how long would I stay?"
Today's riding camps typically are designed for girl from 5 to 16 years
old. Some camps, however, are not gender-specific. There are even
camps that take in mother/daughter teams. Camps for all adults can
also be found. These camps are excellent for new riders.

Some camps provide sleeping quarters, while others you leave
everyday and come back to the next day, lasting up to a few weeks to
complete a full course in either English or Western riding. Some will
even allow you to ride your own horse.
What Gear Should You Take?
You should always ask the camp staff what is required, but here are
some things that you'll want to have at any camp.
For a Western style, you will want to wear jeans. English riding is better
to be done in sweat pants or riding tights, as jeans will cause your knees
to chafe severely.
A pair of English or Western riding boots depending on which style
you're riding, or a boot with a slight heel. Sneakers won't work, as they
can get caught in the stirrup irons and are dangerous.
While at the camp, you'll be issued one, but if riding is to become a
passion, you'll want your own ASTM/SEI approved helmet.
How do I locate a good camp?
You can begin looking at the Allens Guide online at
www.allensguide.com. Whether looking for a local program, or wishing
to ride in another country, this all-inclusive guide gives a vast array of
riding camp options.
Even intermediate riders can have an exciting time acquiring greater
skills at a good horseback riding camp. After undertaking the course,
you'll be pleasantly surprised to find just how well your horseback
riding skills have improved!
