How to make training
work for you

Story

You attend a training or workshop

You find out what is holding you back

It's bad habits!

Yeah, bad habits are holding you back!

You spot the worse of them!

Then you make a decision

I will quit the bad habit, effective from tommorrow!

And you keep it for a couple of days

Until one day when ...

is raining;

or you're tyred;

or lazy

and you decide to skip it

And have a break of the new habit;

Not quitting, just having a break

So, the next day you're back

Why?

Because we are

Creatures of habit

Habits are emotions

Daniel Goleman: All emotions are, in essence, impulses to act, the instant plans for handling life that evolution has instilled in us.

So, how to break bad habits and make use of the training?

Challenge your habits!

Bruce Klatt:
We need to get into the habit of challenging our own habits.

1. Acknowledge!

Acknowledge that certain behaviours and ways of thinking are habits that limit your success!

2. Fill the chart!

Using the chart on the right, see how are these habits limitting your success and how are helping you.

Identify desirable habits, that will allow you achieve your goals. Use the chart to assess how are they helping and limiting.

Advantages

Disadvantages

The old habit

The new/ desired habit

3. Develop a new way

Develop an action plan for practicing your new way of thinking and acting.

Ask for help from your boss, wife, friends and co-workers.

Practice until the new way becomes a habit too

For a while, the old habits still have a hold on you.

Practice until the new way replaces the old habits.

Never give up trying.

Don't stop!

No training without implementation plan

Never finish a training withour a post-training implementation plan!

Be honest with yourself!

Good Luck!
