FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

The following require 1 fat quarter: green floral print fabric, dark green stripe fabric, medium green print fabric, light green solid fabric.The following require 2" x 20" strip: yellow floral print fabric, medium yellow stripe fabric, light yellow print fabric, dark coral print fabric, medium coral print fabric, light coral print fabric. White fabric 2 yards for backgroundBacking fabric 1-1/2 ydBinding fabric 3/4 ydBatting Crib size

CUTTING THE FABRIC

1. Cut the large ‘geese’ triangles from 3" x 21" strips of fabrics. Use the 3" solid line on the Companion Angle Ruler to cut the triangles. Cut the number of strips and triangles from the following fabrics: Green floral print fabric 3 strips 14 triangles Dark green stripe fabric 3 strips 12 triangles Medium green print fabric 2 strips 9 triangles Light green solid fabric 2 strips 8 triangles

2. Cut the small ‘geese’ triangles with the Companion Angle Ruler using the 1-3/4" dotted line. Note: This line on the ruler is not labeled. It is the dotted line between the 1" and 2" solid lines. Trim the yellow and coral fabric strips to 1" wide and cut the number of triangles from each fabric: Yellow floral print fabric 5 triangles Medium yellow stripe fabric 5 triangles Light yellow print fabric 3 triangles Dark coral print fabric 8 triangles Medium coral print fabric 7 triangles Light coral print fabric 6 triangles

3. From the white background fabric, cut 4 – 3-1/2" x 42" strips. From these strips, cut 43 – 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares. Cut every square in half diagonally to yield 86 side triangles to complete the large flying geese blocks.

4. From the white background fabric, cut 2 – 2-1/4" x 42" strips. From these strips, cut 34 – 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" squares. Cut every square in half diagonally to yield 68 side triangles to complete the small flying geese blocks.

5. From the white background fabric, cut 2 – 5-1/2" x 42" strips for the flying geese columns.

6. From the white background fabric, cut 3 – 3" x 42" strips for the flying geese columns.

7. From the white background fabric, cut 2 – 4" x 35" strips for the side borders.

8. From the white background fabric, cut 2 – 4" x 40" strips for the top and bottom borders.

9. From the binding fabric, cut 5 – 2-1/2" x 42" strips. Trim the selvedges. If desired, the binding strips may be cut on the diagonal to make bias binding. A total of 180" of binding is needed.

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS

All seams are sewn right sides together with 1/4" seam allowance.

ASSEMBLING THE FLYING GEESE BLOCKS

1. Choose 1 large ‘geese’ triangle and 2 large 3-1/2" background side triangles to make one large flying geese block.

2. With right sides together, align the long hypotenuse edge of one side triangle with one side of the large ‘geese’ triangle. Sew the triangles together. Press the seam allowance toward the side triangle.

3. Sew the second side triangle to the other side of the large ‘geese’ triangle in the same manner. Press the seam toward the side triangle. This completes one large flying geese block that should measure 3" x 5-1/2". Check the measurement and, if necessary, trim the block ensuring there is 1/4" seam allowance above the center point.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 with the rest of the large ‘geese’ triangles and large 3-1/2". background side triangles to make a total of 43– 3" x 5-1/2" large flying geese blocks.

5. Repeat steps 1-3 with all of the small ‘geese’ triangles and the small 2-1/4" background side triangles to make a total of 34– 1-3/4" x 3" small flying geese blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

Use the quilt picture as a guide to layout the flying geese blocks in 8 columns as described below. Or, if preferred, a new and unique arrangement may be designed. The columns are 35" long when all of the pieces are sewn together. The background pieces are cut the appropriate sizes from the 3" and 5-1/2" wide strips that were previ-ously cut. Column 5 includes 2 columns of small flying geese blocks within it. Sew these two columns first and stitch them together, creating one unit that is 14-1/4" x 5-1/2". Then sew the one unit to the larger geese units. Press the seams in each column all one direction, changing the direction in alternate columns. When sewn together, columns 1, 3, 5, 6, and 8 are 5-1/2" x 35" and columns 2, 4, and 7 are 3" x 35".

3. Sew the 8 columns together matching seam intersections where needed. Press the seams any direction. The quilt top is now 33" wide x 35" long.

ADDING THE BORDERS

1. Sew the 2 – 4" x 35" borders to each side of the quilt top. It now measures 40" wide x 35" long.

2. Sew the 2 – 4" x 40" borders to the top and bottom of the quilt top. The finished quilt top is 40" wide x 42" long.

FINISHING THE QUILT

1. On a flat surface, make a quilt sandwich by layering the backing fabric right side down, then the batting, then the quilt top right side up. Baste the quilt every three to four inches with 1" quilt basting safety pins.

2. Quilt as desired. The quilt pictured was machine quilted in an allover design

3. After quilting, baste stitch 1/4" around the outside edges of the quilt to keep the layers together.

4. Stitch the binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold and press in half lengthwise to make double binding.

5. Sew the binding to the quilt front along the quilt edge with a 3/8" seam.

6. Trim the backing and batting even with the quilt top.7. Flip the binding to the back and stitch down with

matching thread.8. Make a label with your name and date and sew it

onto the back of your quilt. Tip: Sew the label onto the back before quilting so that the quilting stitches permanently attach it to the quilt.
