COURSE SELECTION INSTRUCTIONS

REGISTRATION / COURSE SELECTION

Each school year, students take a variety of both core academic courses as well as electives and/or career and technical education classes.

It is very important for them to select the right courses to fulfill their graduation requirements.

WHERE DO I BEGIN?

Counselors for 10th and 11th grade have been doing one on one meetings with each student. For 9th

graders, the counselors did presentations in the English classes regarding scheduling.

Students should use the information they received from their counselor in order to make the right course selections for their schedules.

THINGS YOU NEED IN ORDER TO REGISTER

Each student will need to use the following information:

1. Academic history/Grad Reqs. Sheet

2. A listing of courses being offered (The blue sheet given to the students – It can also be seen online).

Current juniors (class of 2016) interested in becoming a Teachers Aide (TA) need to select “peer counseling” when doing the online (Skyward) course selection. You must have a 3.0 GPA and be a senior.

3. A credit check sheet – (Only 10th and 11th grade students counselors will receive this)

Students will receive all of these things in their one on one meetings or in their English classes.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRENT JUNIORS(2012-2013 COHORT GROUP)

2.0 minimum grade point average

24 credits 4 – English 4 – Math (Must take and pass Algebra I & Geometry) 3 – Social Studies (World, American/U.S., Am. Gov’t,

Economics with Financial Literacy)

3 – Science (Must take and pass Biology) 1 - HOPE 1 – Practical Arts (vocational), Fine or Performing Arts 8 – Electives *One course must be taken online through LCVS/FLVS Passing scores on the FCAT (245) and Algebra I EOC

(399)*

* Concordant scores on ACT (19 Read) or SAT (430 Read) can be used after the student takes the Grade 10 FCAT at least one time to satisfy the FCAT graduation requirement. A concordant score of 97 on the PERT will satisfy the Algebra EOC graduation requirement.

ACADEMIC HISTORY / GRAD REQ. SHEET

You can see the following information on your academic history:

1. Grades & credits earned

2. Every class that you’ve taken towards fulfilling your graduation requirements for a high school diploma are listed.

3. GPA - Here is how it’s listed on the Grad Req. Sheet:1. GPA 1 = Un-weighted GPA2. GPA 2 = Weighted GPA3. GPA 3 = Disregard (it’s an error)

Please note:

Every time you take a course, every grade you receive (even if you fail), will be shown on your academic history. If you retake a course for grade forgiveness and receive a better grade, each attempt will still be listed but only the better grade will be calculated for your GPA.

You cannot grade forgive a grade of F or D with a D. Only C or higher can give grade forgiveness.

COURSE SELECTION

Using the information given to each student, they can now make their course selections.

Things to consider:

1. Grade Forgiveness (current 9th,10th, & 11th)

2. Honors/AP Courses

3. Foreign Languages (especially Jrs. & Srs.)

4. Online Class – You must complete one

5. Balance in your schedule – don’t drive yourself crazy. Be realistic with what you can handle.

Keep in Mind:

We will be on a traditional 7 period day schedule

For current sophomores – if you are planning on attending a state university following graduation, you need to take 2 foreign language courses (ex: French 1 & 2). It is recommended that you start next year

Look at your academic history/grad reqs. sheet to see what you’ve completed.

Look at the graduation requirements to determine what classes you need to take

1. Sign into Skyward: https://sky-smsweb.lake.k12.fl.us/scripts/wsisa.dll/WService=wsEAplus/fwemnu01.w

2. Look at the blue course selection sheet and choose the classes you want to take. The course selection can also be found at the following link: http://www.lake.k12.fl.us/Page/39982

3. You MUST select classes to fill a full 7 period schedule. Even if you plan on dual enrolling, select 7 classes. Current juniors –Even if you only have 3 core classes left to complete your graduation requirements, you MUST select 7 classes.

4. Make sure to select at least 5 alternate course selections (usually electives but it can be academic).

5. Print your course selections and then students and parents sign it. Current 10th and 11th graders must turn their sheets into the guidance office. Current 9th graders turn it into their English teacher.

You must complete your course selection on Skyward and turn in the print out of your selections to guidance (9th graders turn in their sheets to their English teacher) by

Wednesday April 29th.

Make sure to include the student and parent signatures on the course selection print out.

Keep your copy of your academic history/grad reqs. sheet and your credit check sheets for future reference.

NOW LET’S SELECT YOUR CLASSES ON SKYWARD

BUT WAIT! I HAVEN’T TALKED TO MY COUNSELOR YET! WHAT DO I DO?

10th and 11th graders are having one on one meetings with their counselor. If they don’t get called down to speak to their counselor by the time the scheduling process begins, don’t worry. The students can still put in their course selections. When their counselor calls them down (and they intend on speaking to every 10th and 11th grader), they will review their selections with them and allow them to make any changes needed.

9th graders will have a counselor speak to them in their English classes.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO SELECT YOUR CLASSES ON SKYWARD

Before you begin this process, please remember .......... This is not your final schedule. This is just a selection of courses you would like to take.

You must have access to your skyward account in order to select your courses. If you are having issues logging in, you can speak to a media specialist for your log in info.

You can do this at anytime as long as you have internet access.

We suggest every student discuss their classes with their parents and refer to their academic history in order to make the right selections.

Counselors will review the selections but it is ultimately up to the student to choose the correct classes to satisfy their graduation requirements.

On the request page you

will find available courses

on the left side sorted by

course number. Scroll to

find the course you need

to request. Select the

course and click “add

course”; if done correctly,

you will see the course

appear in the “selected

courses” area on the right

side of the page. ONLY

The student and a

parent/guardian will need to

sign and date the bottom of

the course request printout

(the oval spaces note where

they should sign); once

signatures are done, turn the

selection sheet into guidance

What if I didn’t speak to my counselor about my academic

history?

ANSWER

Current 10th and 11th grade students are being called down to have one on one meetings with their counselors. It takes some time to get to speak to all of them. A counselor is going into all 9th grade English classes to discuss their credits with them.

If 10th and 11th graders don’t get called down by the time the scheduling process begins, don’t worry. The students can still put in their course selections. When their counselor calls them down, they will review their selections with them and allow them to make any changes needed.

Incoming 9th graders:

1. You will not do your course selections online. You will receive all of the information you need either with your counselor at the middle school or at Canes Expo at MDHS on May 14th @ 6:00pm.

2. If you have any questions about your teacher recommendations, you need to speak to your teachers at the middle school and/or your 8th grade counselor.

3. If you attend the Canes Expo, you can turn in your course request sheet at MDHS or to your counselor at MDMS.

4. *All other middle school students can turn in their course selections to MDHS once they have officially registered to be a student. You must register to be a Mt. Dora High School student before we can create a schedule. You cannot register until after the 2014-2015 school year has ended.

What if I want to dual enroll at Lake Sumter State

College (LSSC) or Lake Technical School?

ANSWER You must let your counselor know that you are interested in dual enrolling.

Information about dual enrolling at LSSC can be found on our school website at http://www.lake.k12.fl.us/Page/38711. For Lake Tech go to: http://www.laketech.org/high-school-opportunities/dual-enrollment

11th and 12th grade students with at least a 3.0 GPA and a passing score for the FCAT Reading test (for current 11th graders) can dual enroll. Any students that will enter the 11th grade in the fall of 2015 may begin dual enrolling in the summer (after classes end at MDHS) before their 11th

grade year.

If you didn’t take the PERT, it will be given during the last week of May (You must let your counselor know that you would like to take the test). You can also qualify with SAT or ACT scores. See the webpage above for additional information.

You must be 16, pass the TABE test (given at Lake Tech) have most or all of your graduation requirements met, and have a 2.0 GPA in order to dual enroll at Lake Tech.

What if I want to take some classes online?

ANSWER

You can choose to take a course on FLVS/LCVS at any time of the year. You must

work on it on your own time.

Florida virtual school/Lake County virtual school courses are real full time courses.

Don’t over do it and overwhelm yourself. Be realistic…. Will you do the work?
