What is an equation?An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equal sign "=" like this:
x + 2 = 6The equation says: what is on the left (x+2) is equal to what is on the right.
So an equation is like a statement "this equals that".
(Note: this equation has a solution of x = 4)

What is a formula? A formula is a fact or rule that uses mathematical symbols.
It will usually have:• an equal sign (=)• two or more variables (x, y, etc) that stand for values we don't
know yet.
It shows us how things are related to each other.
Example: The formula for finding the volume of a box is:
V = lwh
V stands for volume, l stands for length, w stands for width
and h stands for height

When l = 10, w = 4, and h = 5, then:

The following are all equations, but only some are formulas:
x = 2y - 7 Formula (relating x and y)
a2 + b2 = c2 Formula (relating a, b, and c)
x/2 + 7 = 0 Not a formula (just an equation)

Subject of a FormulaThe subject of a formula is the single variable (usually on the left of the "=") that everything else is equal to.
Example: in the formula
s = ut + 1/2 at2
"s" is the subject of the formula. This is what we want to find.

Changing the SubjectA very powerful thing that Algebra can do, is to "rearrange" a formula so that another variable is the subject.
Example: Rearrange the volume of a box formula (V = lwh) so that width is the subject.
Start with: V = lwh

The Metric System
The metric system was created so that people around the world could talk about measurement using the same standard system.
The metric system is sometimes called the SI System. SI refers to System International, commonly known as Standard International Units.
The following prefixes (word beginnings) are used with all SI measurements to represent different amounts of each base unit.

Larger to Smaller Units:
This diagram shows the metric prefixes as a staircase to demonstrate how the prefixes make the base unit smaller or bigger.

One way to convert units using the metric staircase is to move the decimal one space to the left for each step upward.
A) Convert 1448 millimetres to metres.
B) 62.3 litres is how many kilolitres?
C) 97 centigrams is how many grams?

The Imperial System
The Imperial System is mainly used in the United States. Canada uses the metric system and the imperial system. The imperial system is used in some occupations, such as building construction. Many products are labelled with both metric and imperial units
The following chart illustrates some basic imperial units and measuring tools.
