HOW TO USE THE PUBLIC REALM TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS

Great places are filled with people and activity. Active places are good for business, and they help to create safe, healthy and inspired communities.

This guide is a handy go-to-reference that’ll help you grow your business – by activating the space in the public realm which is available to use.

What does that mean we hear you ask? Activation is a growing trend where businesses use their adjacent public space in creative ways to really engage customers.

We encourage our local business community to ‘think outside the square’ and act outside their business!

» Use the footpath! Bring internal activity out into the public realm for everyone’s enjoyment.

» Create a great little outdoor eating area and take advantage of Perth weather.

» Host a street performer in front of your shop.

» Cook food out on the footpath and add life and tantalising smells to the streetscape.

» Take over the public spaces in your urban village, like our some businesses have by installing Parklets.

OUTDOOR EATING AREASAn outdoor eating area is any seating area adjacent to a food premises. If you own a food premises then we encourage you create an outdoor eating area. Our Perth climate lends itself to being outdoors – having an outdoor eating area is great for business, because it’s great for people!

How do I get approval?

» Fill out the application form (see web page) for an Outdoor Eating Area permit

» There is no fee

» You’ll need public liability insurance of $10 million.

DISPLAYING GOODS ON THE FOOTPATH

How amazing does it look and feel when retailers spill out onto the street? We love it! We encourage all retail businesses to bring out and display their wares on the street. This creates life and interest, and really works to maximise the exposure of your offerings. Just be sure to leave a 1.5m wide access on the path for people to use.

How do I get approval?

» Fill out the application form (see web page) for a Trading in Public Places permit

» There is no fee

» You’ll need public liability insurance of $10 million.

This guide explains how Vincent businesses can use public spaces and the approvals (if any) that are required from the City.

How do I get approval?

» Fill out the application form (see web page) for a Trading in Public Places permit

» There is no fee

» You’ll need public liability insurance of $10 million.

COOKING ON THE STREETWe encourage food premises to cook on the street – yummy! Great places engage all of the senses, and there’s nothing more exciting than the smells and sounds of local food being served directly onto the street.

How do I get approval?

» Fill out the application form (see web page) for a Temporary Food Stallholder permit

» Fee charged is $50 (one-off, for the four Sundays)

» You’ll need public liability insurance of $10 million.

HOST A STREET PERFORMERYour customers are not only interested in your goods, but also the experience your business offers. Create a unique experience and support local talent by hosting a live musical or artistic performance in your town centre.

» There is no fee

» The road closure area in the Leederville Town Centre is a Permit-free Entertainer Zone

» Refer to the Risk Management Guidelines and Code of practice for Street Performers to see if your performers need public liability insurance of $20 million.

HIRING A PUBLIC SPACE IN YOUR TOWN CENTREVincent has a couple of great public spaces within the town centres that can be hired for a small fee: the Oxford Street Reserve and the space that’s at the junction of Newcastle Street and Carr Place, where the lamps artwork is. What events can you create that involve the community and promote your business? Imagine the possibilities…

How do I hire a Town Centre Public Space?

» Hire a public space online (see the web page)

» Public Space hire fees: - Non-for profit: $25 day / $30 at night - Community: $28-39 day / $35-47 at night - Commercial: $70 day / $82 at night - Power usage fee (if required) - $61

» We’ll create an approvals plan for you depending on what you are doing (building a stage, liquor licensing, etc)

HOST A PARKLETYou can apply to host a Parklet outside your business. Parklets are small public parks set into the existing streetscape (normally taking over a car bay).

They’re public spaces for anyone to use, providing a place to rest, eat or work. They help local businesses by encouraging people to linger longer, and they boost character, walkability and amenity in the area.

How do I apply for a Parklet?
