Based on melodic motifs from his song pair “Regenlied” and “Nachtklang,” the first violin sonata by German composer and pianist Johannes Brahms demonstrates his imaginative use of an economy of material. These motifs are found woven into all three movements of the sonata, thus tying the work as much to the genre of theme and variation as to that of a Classical, multi-movement sonatic essay. The original song texts explore themes of nostalgia for childhood and lost love evoked by the sound of falling rain, and in the sonata one can hear the pit-ter-patter of raindrops as the lyrical main themes are shaped and re-shaped throughout the work. Although he abandoned his dream of becoming a violin virtuoso, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius was able to turn his understanding of the instrument into masterpieces such as his violin concerto, sever-al string quartets and trios, and numerous smaller pieces for violin with piano accompaniment. “Sou-venir” comes for a set of six character pieces written during WWI and published in 1922. It features a sweeping sense of Romantic lyricism coupled with a firm grasp of the idiomatic possibilities of the violin,

and is touched with the sparkle of flute-like natural harmonics. In his prolific but relatively short life, Polish violinist and composer Henryk Wie-niawski fused the refinement of the training he received at the Paris Conservatoire with formidable and brilliant virtuosic skills. Highly influential in the creation of a Russian style of violin playing, he championed his invention of a higher elbow and stiffer wrist when bowing. One of the new virtuosic tricks allowed by this bowing method was the staccato ricochet, a series of short, bouncing notes played in a single long bow stroke, and featured in the “Capriccio-valse.” Structured in rondo form, much like a palindrome, this work is designed to show off a violinist’s abili-ties through repetitions of key melodic ideas interleaved with discursive episodes. American composer and violinist Clarence Cameron White was raised in a musical family and studied at the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio as well as privately in

Europe. Many of his works draw inspiration from his African-American heritage. “Levee Dance” embodies the dichotomy of the Black experience: the levity and verve of a rag-time stomp contrasted with the sorrow and yearning for freedom found in the spiritual “Go Down Moses.” Listen especially for ban-jo-esque pizzicato, and for the melodic and harmonic coloring brought by the bending of jazzy “blue” notes. When French violinist Marie Tayau gave the public premier of Gabriel Fauré’s first violin sonata with the composer at the key-board on January 27, 1877, it was immediately hailed a success—so much so that they were asked to repeat it at house concerts on both of the following evenings. Up until this moment it had been felt that Romantic instrumental chamber music was primarily the purview of Germanic composers; Fauré showed that French composers were just as capable of exceling in the genre while still maintaining a sense of Gallic refinement. Camille Saint-

Saëns, Fauré’s mentor and friend, exclaimed in a review of the work for the April 1877 issue of the Journal de musique:

This sonata has everything that will seduce the gourmet: novel forms, exquisite modulations, uncommon tone colors, the use of the most unexpected rhythms. And hovering above all this is a magic which envelops the work and brings the masses of ordinary listeners to accept the wildest au-dacities as something perfectly natural. [...] Monsieur Fauré has projected himself with one bound into the ranks of the masters.

Marianne Kordas serves as the director of the Music Materials Center for the Andrews University James White Library. She holds graduate degrees in music librarianship and music history from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Herself a violinist, she also enjoys reading in French, gardening and hiking.
