HOY RCMA: Opening Doors

to Opportunities

RCMA Honors Achievers

On April 19th a

luncheon was held in

Sebring to honor those who

had earned academic

recognition.

CDAs, FDCs, AA, AS

degrees BS degrees and

two Master’s degrees were

earned by RCMA staff.

The number of achievers

was an all time high.

Speakers Rhonda Da

Rocha and Velma Adame gave advice to those on the

learning path. Listeners were informed that

tears may fall, and weekends would no longer

be free. Tales of frustration and feelings of

giving up were shared. Yet, after all the trials

the tears did dry and the frustrations did not

cause a surrender.

Those honored

that day

achieved their

goals for the

children at the

centers. They

achieved so they

could be role

models for their

families. They

achieved to keep a

promise… because they had accepted a challenge... They

achieved because someone believed in them. They

achieved because it was the right thing to do!

lágrimas se secaron y la frustración no causó

dieran.

Gathers together for the

It was perfect windy pinwheel weather.

Hundreds of silver and blue pinwheels spun

for the “Pinwheels for Prevention” ceremony to kick off “Child

Abuse Prevention Awareness Month.” The Pinwheels for

Prevention campaign uses a simple Child’s toy to remind

people that all can play important roles in Children’s lives.

The crowd enjoyed a Children’s chorus from the Redlands

Christian Migrant Association, who sang “Who are the People

in the Neighborhood”

and “Habia un Sopa.”

also made for the

molinillos de viento. Cientos de

molinetes de vientos de color plata y azul

girando para la ceremonia "Molinetes para la

Prevención" para dar inicio a "El mes de la prevención del

Abuso Infantil." Molinetes de viento son usados para la

campaña de prevención de abuso infantil como el juguete

sencillo de un niño para recordar a la gente de que todos

podemos jugar un papel importante en la vida de los niños.

El público disfrutó de la participación de un

coro de niños de Redlands Christian Migrant Association, que cantaron "¿Quiénes son las

personas en el barrio" y "Habia una Sopa." Las

maestras de RCMA trabajaron con los

countries the families grow their own fruits/vegetables. Later they sorted and planted the seeds. The children also

County’s Highest

Honor On a cool April night in

Naples they waited in a

hushed silence. This was the

night when three teachers

would be selected as

winners of the coveted

“Apple Blossom Teacher of the Year Award.” There was a

nervous tension in the air—many had been nominated but

only three would be chosen.

Ramona Grullon of Farmworker Village C, represented

RCMA at the event. “Being a teacher is Ramona’s

passion… She’s the best!” stated Mati Mendoza, the

center’s ECS.

Ramona’s name was announced as a winner. This news

generated spirited cheers and thundering applause from the

RCMA delegation. After the congratulating hugs and words

of celebration Ramona left the bright lights of Naples and

returned home… and the very next day Ramona was back at

the center doing what she loves…

Caution: Deconstruction Ahead: Undoing faulty mind patterns in order to see again for the first time “I was looking at a picture of my children and saw again how beautiful they are. I wondered how I could be the mother of such lovely children.” She

said to me. This was the same woman who had previously spoken so poorly about herself. “Maybe your mother was wrong…” I shared. “Maybe you were never fat and ugly… maybe it was just a story in your head… a story that’s not worth believing anymore...”

RCMA Mr. Booker T. Washington was a man of great courage—he lived during times of widespread racism yet, he excelled in his endeavors.

Character, not circumstances makes the man. Booker T. Washington

Mr. Washington was criticized for not being more militant and angry over the obvious unfairness and stupefying ignorance of the times. Yet, he was not deterred. He had a vision that could see beyond the horizon. Mr. Washington was the first person of color to be invited to the White House. He cleared a path for another man of color who would be elected to actually live in the White House. That Spirit of preparing a better way for others continues at the Booker T. Center. Here are a few examples:

Teachers are Teaching Teachers

How do you help teachers to understand and apply important child development ideas? Here’s the “Booker T. Way.” Ask teachers to discuss the importance of developmental milestones. Ask

them how a teacher can create the conditions so those important growth stages can be reached. And then, let the teachers role-play how they help children reach and exceed developmental goals.

Saving a Baby’s Life What would you do if a choking baby who was turning blue was thrown into your arms? Miss Wilyatta, while on a home visit, found herself in just such a circumstance. Luckily the baby had fallen into good hands—hands that knew what to do. Miss Wilyatta had received the training that was needed. She calmly followed the life-saving procedures and the baby was saved—before the ambulance arrived the child had made a full recovery. “You’re in good hands at Booker T…”

Connecting with the Community Staff at Booker T. Washington CDC regularly search the internet for jobs in the area. Then a list of jobs is made available to the community.
