WANT TO HELP?

Haji Public School (HPS) Breswana invites volunteers tocome help with the school and its daily operations.

We are looking forshort-term and long-term teaching staff forour primary classes.

As of 2013, HPS Breswana has 7 classes: lower kindergarten(LKG), upper kindergarten (UKG), and Grades 1 through 5.

The student strength is 55. We have a teaching staff of fourandnon-teaching staff of two people.

After school hours volunteers are at leisure to go sight-seeing,study the village, observe rural life first-hand etc.

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?

We are looking for anyone* genuinely interested in education

and kids, with a philanthropic bent of mind. Should be comfortable with kids (in the age group 4-8 for the

most part), and be able to teach them.

No special skills or training required, though volunteers withprior teaching experience are preferred.

Should commit to help at HPS Breswana for at least 3 months.Long-term volunteers, no limit!

Non-teaching volunteers welcome as well, if you can help withthe school in some way.

Volunteers of all ages welcome. Come in a group for more fun!

Breswana IS a mountain village in Kashmir, so volunteersshould be adventurous, low maintenance, and in reasonablygood physical condition.

*The HPS management may conduct a background check on volunteers.Please have references ready.

WHAT VOLUNTEERS CAN DO

Regular classes:Step into class and well let you take

over the syllabus. Give the regular teachers a breather.Or assist them.

Help improve the kids English.

Teach them a new language.

Teach extras like music, dance, drama, arts and craft or

games. Tell the kids about the world outside their village: Open

their eyes and minds.

Organise fun activities like Show & Tell, Story-Time,Play-Acting or just talk to them.

Teach the Teachers: Hold workshops or trainingsessions for the teachers to help improve their skills.

Not a teacher: How else can you help? If youre adoctor, do medical checkups for the students, forexample. Media professionals can help us create videosor documentaries of our work and get the word out.

Population = 1300, nearly half of whom are minors

Local languages: Kashmiri, Urdu, Hindi

100% Muslim population

The literacy rate is quite poor, especially amongwomen. Things have improved with the youngergeneration though the quality of education in Govt

schools is still very bad. With the exception of a few households, the

villagers fall in the Below Poverty Linedemographic.

The village has basic electric and water

connections, and no telephone lines. Mobile phone coverage is pretty good (Indian

operators)

THE VOLUNTEER PACKAGE Food and accommodation will be provided in comfortable

guest quarters at the Haji cottage. (Running water, electricity,

Western toilets. )
