CONNECT Keeping New Hires Beyond 90 Days December 5, 2014 A common and difficult dilemma manufacturers face currently is keeping new hires beyond a 90 day assessment period. With current Upper Valley unemployment rates below 4.5%, compeon for “exceponal” employees among the eligible workforce is ramping up. It is crucial for HR managers to set the tone for the success of new employees during the hiring process and aſter. According to Google, their hiring managers are responsible for instung a “Role & Responsibilies” discussion with new hires. Matching newbies with a peer or supervisor, a “Go-To” person for any quesons that may come up. The manager should also help new hires build relaonships with the company, a social network. Monthly onboarding check-ins will solidify the new hires relaonship with the company. Most importantly, create open lines of communicaon with employees which can foster new ideas within the company. Dr. Tayla Bauer, Professor of Management @ Portland State University, conducted an Onboarding study which reveals the building blocks of successful onboarding. She states they are oſten called the “Four C’s”: 1. Connecon refers to developing the key interpersonal relaonships, support mechanisms, and informaon networks needed to prosper in a job. 2. Culture refers to learning the unique organizaonal culture of a new employer. 3. Clarificaon refers to understanding one’s job dues, work processes, and organizaonal structure & acronyms. 4. Compliance refers to compleng required employment paperwork and providing necessary equipment like I.D. badges & computers. The most important of the 4 “Cs” is Connecon. 1 lb. Boneless Chuck, trimmed & cut into 1/4” Cubes

2 lbs. Ground Beef, Coarse Grind

1 lb. Bulk Italian Sausage

3 Tbsp. Chili Powder

2 tsp. Cayenne Pepper

2 tsp. Ground Coriander

2 tsp. Ground Cumin

2 tsp. Granulated Garlic

2 tsp. Granulated Onion

2 tsp. Hot Paprika

2 tsp. Kosher Salt

2 tsp. Freshly Ground Black Pepper

2 Cups Tomato Sauce

1 Cup Tomato Paste

12 oz. Sam Adam’s Lager Beer

1 Cup Chicken Stock

Directions

Add bacon grease & butter to a Lg. Saucepan over high heat.

Add Chiles, bell peppers, & onions, cook until caramelized, 5 minutes.

Add garlic & sauté, 1 minute

Add chuck & brown, 4 minutes.

Add Ground Beef & sausage & brown 7-10 minutes.

Add all spices, 1 minute.

Add tomato sauce & paste, stir to caramelize, 2 minutes.

Stir in beer & stock

Add beans, lower heat & simmer, about 2 hours.

Serve with shredded cheddar cheese, thinly sliced green onions & homemade French Fries cooked in peanut oil.

January 30, 2015 Wages are on the rise due to

unfilled jobs in the U.S. being at their highest level

since 2001. The Labor Department stated the

number of employer job openings stands at nearly 5

million positions. According to Twitter

handle, @crresearch (Credit Suisse), as

unemployment declines, wages begin to rise. Wages have only grown 2% in

the last year but are now on an upward trend because of the tightening

employment market. The National unemployment rate stood at 5.6% in

December with manufacturing jobs being added at double the rate in 2014

versus 2013, 16,000 per month vs 7,000 per month, respectively. Ohio’s

unemployment rate stands, #17 in the Union, at 4.8%. The US workforce

hasn’t seen a healthy, 4% wage growth since 2007, which is imperative in

keeping up with inflation.

Employers who want to attract and maintain a better workforce, need to

think outside the box. Employees need to be appreciated and like what they

do or they will move on. Fifty-One Percent (51%) of workers are actively

looking for, or open to, a career move. 36% of Millennials, the 18-29 age

group, are twice as likely to change jobs in three years or less than the

30-somethings (source: Jobvite). Having non-stop orientations and training

of new recruits is a tremendous drain on any company’s resources.

Proactive workforce management is a necessity in this digital information

age. America’s workforce, because of Social Media , is more connected than

any other time in our nation’s 239 year history. According to Jobvite’s

annual survey, 52% of jobs seekers, use Facebook in their search. Social

Media sites & Google have given even the least academic of us, the power

to improve their position with just a few key strokes.

Resume Checklist

Resume writing isn’t easy and a two page, single paragraph resume will assuredly get tossed. Here is checklist of a few important tips to remember.

The purpose of a resume is to land an interview, keep it short-n-sweet with no personal embellishments.

Use “Keywords” to back up your qualities and strengths.

Proofread, proofread again, forward, backward, and then again tomorrow.

Do not include “References”, employers know they are available.

No Pictures or Funky Fonts.

Punctuation, Spelling, & Grammar, get it right.

One Page Only.

Use action verbs like “managed” or “planned”.

When emailing, copy & paste resume into the body to avoid file/attachment compatibility problems with the email recipient.

New Arrival

February 3, 2015. Dominic Michael Horner arrived at Upper Valley

Medical Center on December 11th weighing in @ 7 lbs. 11 oz.

Michelle endured 23 hours of labor before her little blue eyed baby

boy decided it was time. Dominic is now 7 weeks old and already

sleeping through the night and has been caught by Paparazzi

(Mom) holding his bottle. Our new Mom is doing well & we are

excited to have her back with us.

On a side note, MJ said her Wednesday to Saturday “Well Baby” hospital stay has

topped out at $29,000 which we all agree is simply ridiculous.

February 5, 2015… HR Associates’ 4th Quarter saw a 25% increase in job assignments with client orders continuing to roll in

despite annual holiday shut downs. To stay on track with clients & with the local unemployment rates below 4.5%, HR

Associates felt it necessary to increase the advertising budget by 30% in January. Much of the increase was due to the variety

of positions being offered by clients.

HR Associates is in process of adding an ACA compliant MEC (Minimum Essential Coverage) Healthcare plan to it’s current

Essential StaffCare indemnity Healthcare offerings. The MEC plan will cover all ACA mandated yearly screenings and services

required by law.

On The Home Front

The Boys: Heather’s Wright State son is now on Major #3… she need say no more? Her High School Senior, D, has been busy

with winter weight-lifting for the upcoming spring Baseball season. Other than invitations, Heather is ready for D’s graduation

ceremony & festivities with a big tent, good food & a giant balloon slide. Her youngest has decided on Baseball too, Heather

hopes the boys’ Fall Ball participation will make a difference in their game this spring.

Fun: Heather has been enjoying her volunteer work with Piqua Baptist’s Upward Basketball program. She has been

organizing the kitchen and helping with concessions every Saturday this season. The Upward Basketball program has been a

real blessing & gift for Piqua and surrounding communities’ youth. Heather invites you to come out and see the kids play. She

thinks you will be impressed and may even get a chuckle out of your visit.
