Annual Harassment & Discrimination Prevention

New York State has recently passed legislation that requires all employers within the state to provide

annual training on sexual harassment prevention. Beginning in 2019, on an annual basis, all Pace

University employees will be required to complete an online Harassment & Discrimination Prevention

training program. An email was sent to all Pace employees directly from our vendor’s email,

[email protected], on July 29, 2019, with a link to the training and instructions on how to access

the course. If you have not yet completed the training, please do so at your earliest convenience. If

you have any questions, please contact the Talent Development department in Human Resources at

[email protected].

their annual performance review with their supervisor during this period.

Employees: Share Your Success Stories! Inspire Others to Pace

Themselves to Wellness!!

The road to improved health can be a difficult one – but not impossible. We are asking you to submit

your success story so that you might inspire one of your colleagues. We will select one submission

for each newsletter, and highlight a success story to the Pace community. “Be Well! And Tell!!” is all

about you and how you can help inspire others to become successful in their wellness quest.

Laurie Brown Kindred’s story winning the fight against breast cancer, in her own words:

Being a full-time working mom is no easy feat, to say the least. Sadly, it takes a tragedy in order for

one to make priorities in their life. Eight years ago this summer, I was diagnosed with Stage 3b Breast

Cancer. From diagnosis, surgery, and treatment to recovery and reconstruction, the 18 months

changed my life forever. Our twin girls were three at the time. I always say that I got through that time

because of them. But then what? It took several years afterwards for me to realize that I needed to

find wellness for myself, or I could be right back in that infusion suite. Advice from my husband –

“you’ve got to be selfish.” As a woman and a mom, that’s nearly impossible. But if you want to take

your life in your own hands and be the best you, it’s a necessity. Here’s what I strive to live by:

1. Make time for yourself - a morning jog, a nightly bath, you choose. Give to yourself at least

once a week, something that you do just for YOU.

2. Eat wisely (or at least try to) - what goes in, comes out, in more ways than one.

3. It’s okay to cheat - don’t beat yourself up. Just jump back on your train at the next turn.

4. Surround yourself with people who make you happy - as The Artist Way says, ‘Rid your life of

the Crazymakers.’

5. Be grateful - especially for the littlest things.

6. Find your ‘zen’ - for me, it’s gardening.

As I told the twins, when one asked randomly if we were poor – “Do you have everything you need?

Not want? We have our health, each other, a roof over our head, food on the table, books, art and

more. With that alone, we’re very rich. And that’s worth more than all the money in the world.”

Upcoming Events

Lee National Denim Day

Friday, October 4, 2019

During the month of October, people across the country will unite to celebrate Lee National Denim

Day®. Pace University is proud to continue taking part in this movement aimed to end breast cancer.

Please join us in helping Lee® Jeans and the American Cancer Society® improve the everyday lives

of those affected by breast cancer – past, present and future. Please consider joining the Pace team

and/or making a donation. Don’t forget to wear your favorite jeans to work on Friday, October 4th and

show your support!

The Great American Smokeout

Thursday, November 21, 2019

Quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes time. And a plan. You don’t have to stop smoking in

one day. Start with day one. The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout® is

an annual event that encourages and offers support to smokers to make a plan to quit

smoking or to quit smoking on the day of the event – the third Thursday in November

each year. By quitting – even for one day – smokers will be taking an important step

toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk.

Watch for a communication coming from Human Resources and the Health and

Wellness Committee, inviting you to participate in the Smokeout (whether you use

tobacco or not).

You may even win a prize!

Reminders

Benefits Open Enrollment

The Annual Benefits Open Enrollment Period for the January 1, 2020 – December 31, 2020 plan year

will take place in November 2019! More information will be forthcoming via email in fall 2019.

Student Employee Spotlight

Student employees are hired University-wide and the goal of the University is to encourage students

to understand that the tasks and duties assigned to them will give them a small glimpse into the

outside work world. More often than not, we will have students that go above and beyond the

expectations of their team/departments.

Please meet James Huggins (’19), one of the student assistants in the Talent Acquisition department.

James is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Human Resources at the Lubin School of

Business. James provides impeccable customer service when working with students, staff, and faculty

and helps them to feel more at ease. James promotes the Pace brand every chance he gets and

understands the value of being a Pace student employee.

Hiring student employees can be a huge benefit to any department, and also encourages student

retention. It increases a student’s self-confidence and efficacy by teaching them new skills and how to

navigate the workplace.

If you have a student worker you would like us to showcase in our student employee spotlight

segment, please email us at: [email protected]. We would like to inform the University community

about all the wonderful students we have working on campus.
