I am accountable for my words and actions.

I believe in integrity.

I believe in diversity.

I believe in equality.

I believe in civility.

To promote our mission celebrating Civility Awareness Month, Human Resources is

encouraging managers, chairs, faculty and student advisors to review the Pace Community

Pledge and the Civility and Respect Pace Community Standards with staff, faculty and students.

Human Resources is inviting the Pace community to use the YES I Make It Happen

recognition program from May 1, 2019 through June 15, 2019 to recognize staff and

student workers for being civility champions. Five civility champions will be randomly

selected to win a pair of movie tickets. All civility champions will receive a certificate of

appreciation.

The Staffing and Recruitment Department is now

called Talent Acquisition!

We are happy to announce that the Staffing and Recruitment department has changed its

to submit your success story so that you might inspire one of your colleagues. We will

select one submission for each newsletter, and highlight a success story to the Pace

community. “Be Well! And Tell!!” is all about you and how you can help inspire others

to become successful in their wellness quest.

Studies

They say the body never lies. If that’s the case, then my body has recently been telling me

that I’m a bit of a broken mess. That’s the start of the story, at any rate, but it’s not the end.

In November, I lost my footing on the edge of a walkway while talking with a student, and I

landed on both knees with my face subsequently smashing into the ground. The trauma of

the impact left me disoriented, but Suzi Eisman of Career Services witnessed the fall. She

guided me to Health Services, where I was carefully tended to. After a day to recover, I

returned to work with an archipelago of abrasions spanning my face from chin to eye, a

band-aid across my nose, and my front dental bridge chipped and awkward when I smiled.

I gradually healed with minimal traces of the injury.

Page 10: HR Newsletter - May 2019 - Pace University · 2019-05-14 · HR Newsletter - May 2019 Welcome to HR News and Highlights, Pace University's Human Resources newsletter. The goal of

Then, at the start of March, I slipped while shoveling and broke my wrist. The pain was

terrible. I had a splint and sling for three weeks that prohibited all use of my left arm and

hand, and then I had limited mobility for another three weeks while outfitted with a cast.

During the six weeks of relying on one arm, I learned to dress myself, I relied on voice-to-

text technologies, and I began responding to student writing through screen recordings.

People helped me cut my food, take the cap off a dry erase marker, or carry things I

couldn’t manage. Every daily routine took at least twice as long to complete. Meanwhile, I

was incredibly tired as my body worked to heal.

My colleagues, friends, family members, and students supported me, offering reassurance

when I felt frustrated with my limited capabilities or with the inevitable worry as my falls led

to me falling behind.

While I don’t recommend falling to anyone, these challenging times were also moments of

learning and insight, as challenges often are.

When I am doing too much and carrying too much of a load, I get distracted. I lose my

footing. I end up hurting myself (and potentially hurting others). Slowing down, focusing,

and moving with intention can help prevent the kinds of injuries I sustained. Yes, accidents

can happen at any time, but they are less likely when stress levels are low or at least

manageable.

Furthermore, just as I needed the support of others when injured, I need the support of

others to stay well. Not one of us should feel responsible for everything; instead, we need

to be willing to share the load with one another and to be patient when tasks take time. At

the end of the day, any of us can temporarily feel like a broken mess. But we can also

choose to take time to heal or even take time to stay well. And we can choose to support

and reassure one another in the process.

Would you like to share YOUR success story? Please send it to [email protected]

by June 14th, and use the subject line “Be Well! And Tell!!”
