Management and Home: A Meeng for Women Execuves and

Entrepreneurs

Vising Dubai and India

Response to our Call for Papers

HRF is proud to announce that it has received an incredible response

to the Call for Papers launched in preparaon for the Sustainable

Living conference. Proposals have reached us from countries in eve-ry connent including papers from Mexico, Argenna, Germany, Italy,

Spain, Thailand, New Zealand, the Philippines, Canada, the United States

and Nigeria. We have no doubt that the introducon of workshops to

the Excellence in the Home conferences will prove to be a dynamic

way to encourage interdisciplinary research on the topic of the home.

The Management and Home meeng for Women Execuves

and women entrepreneurs organised by Mas Valores, a

foundaon that helps organisaons contribute towards the

development of both individuals and society in general, took

place on October 7th in Buenos Aires, Argenna. Themes dis-

cussed included the development of management skills asa result of working in the home and the impact the home has

on society and family life. Home Renaissance Foundaons Me-

dia Consultant, Maria Sahuquillo, aended the conference

and presented the Foundaon and its work to the aendees.

Members of the HRF team will be travelling to Dubai and India later

this autumn to spread the vision of Home Renaissance Foundaonand promote the Sustainable Living conference. In India, the team will visit

the Kamalini Vocaonal Training Centre to assess ways in which the Foun-

daon can support this iniave.

At HRF the summer lull is hardly noceable if it exists at all and

the great response we have received from our call for papers is

evidence of the hard work that has gone into these summer months.

We are working hard to expand our internaonal presence and, as you know,

Mercedes, Teresa and I were recently in Lagos Business School where I deliv-

ered various keynote addresses as Chairman of Home Renaissance Foundaon.

Further to this, trips will also be made to Dubai and India later this autumn.

Our energies for the next few months will be increasingly focussed

on the Sustainable Living conference as the event draws nearer. I

would like to take this opportunity to encourage you all to speak to as

many people as you can about this event and to register for it. By do-

ing this you will not only be supporng our conference but helping us

to achieve a greater recognion of the value and dignity of the home.

Elisabeth studied law in Fribourg,Switzerland, and    nished with a

masters. She has been married since

1982 and is a full- me mother of   ve.

In 2003 her oldest daughter died of

cancer. In 2005 Elisabeth published

the book, Schenk mir Dein Lächeln,

a tes mony of how she and her fa-

mily lived her daughters illness.

Mrs. Andras, you have been a Di-

rector of Home Renaissance Foun-da on from the beginning and you

seem to keep working with unlim-

ited energy to foster ini  a ves that

support the mission and vision of

the Founda on. What role do you

think the work of the home plays in

a professional approach to mother-

hood?

I am convinced that motherhood

is a profession that, unfortunately,

is not recognised by society or by

policians. Polical programmes

support mothers who work outside

the home but not those who have

chosen to stay with their children to

give them a stable and warm home.

I think help should be available for

mothers who see their work for the

family as a profession and as crucial

for the well-being of their children.

One of a mothers most important

roles is that of being in charge of thework of the home. The vision of HRF

alludes to the fundamental role the

work of the home plays in the crea-

There is a new genera on of mo-

thers in the USA who are choosing

to stay at home rather than follow

their mothers into the workforce.

Interes ngly, recent studies sug-

gest that being a housewife can

provide a woman with more life

sa sfac  on than su  ering from

work-family tension. In your ex-

perience, is this a choice todays

women are happy with?

American women have a much lon-

ger tradion of working both inside

and outside the home than Swiss

women do. In 1992 62% of women

in Switzerland worked in the home.

Today the percentage is 31%. Onlyone third of working women have a

full-me job, though. In Switzerland

there is a push to create part-me

jobs that will integrate more wo-

men into the workforce and more

and more mothers look for these

part-me jobs. One reason for this

is that in our school system children

come home for lunch. Children who

do not go home have to go into

childcare.I imagine that we will also see a

trend similar to the one you men-

on in the States once a genera-

on of Swiss girls has grown up with

working mothers because it is very

hard to endure the pressure of fami-

ly and work.

on of a more humane society. We

can transmit so many virtues and

values through a well kept home. A

friendly and dy home reects the

respect family members have for

each other. It says, I care for you

and your needs are important to

me. An eciently run home creates

peace and helps us deal with every-

day life.

How does Mu erplus ins l a

sense of professional excellence in

its par  cipants?

monthly ongoing formaon. We ca-

ter to the di erent tasks a motherdeals with in her profession by o er-

ing many courses and the referees

for the courses are professionals.

We had a module about nutrion,

for example, lead by a nutrionist.

Last autumn ocers from the De-

partment of Schools and Teachers,

including special needs teachers,

spoke about the new law for pub-

lic schools in Switzerland. This au-

tumn a module on educaon will betaught by a psychologist, a parent

coach, a teacher and the Headtea-

cher of a grammar school. Through

these modules mothers gain skills,

knowledge and a deep appreciaon

of the important role they play in

society through their work at home.

How super your new site looks you must be thrilled! (S. Atkins)I congratulate you for the high quality of your website and summer

Thank you for the news you sent me. I think it is very interesng and

I will pass it on to my friends and colleagues I am sure they will like

the philosophy of Home Renaissance Foundaon! (M. A. Goiri)

I sought inspiraon in self-help books, even those about how to be

successful and how to run a business. I didnt see why the strategies used

in business couldnt be applied to running a house. (Danielle Raine. How

to Hoover up those housework blues: Driven to despair by the monotony

of daily chores? Help is at hand from a new book The Mail Online)

According to a research project en

tled Dual Career Academic Cou-ples: What Universies Need to Know, Men and women who employ

others to do housework are more producve than those who dont em-

ploy others. (Producvity is measured by number of published arcles).

Furthermore, the authors suggest that colleges recognize that house-

work is an academic issue and revise benets packages accordingly.

They suggest that instuons o er exible packages of benets, in which

For middle class women child benet is not just about money. It is a

rare acknowledgement that their labour has value... Would the women

who protest about losing child benet agree to have their domesc work
