Fellow squadron members it is the time for Thankfulness—yes I mean-- Can you be-

lieve it? The Indians have finally made it to the World Series. All 57 years of my knowing Charlie I have heard the

story how his grandfather took the train from Montana and bought the two of them dollar seats for the 1948 World

Series. No sporting event has ever lived up to that event! Now the Indians have another chance at fame. Hope Bob

Feller is watching. Charlie certainly is.

Well it is certainly appropriate that the Indians are doing well this month. Since this whole month is about Pilgrims,

Indians, and Thanksgiving, squadron members are asked to remember that at our Christmas Party in December our

bigggg fundraiser of raffle items is for our outstanding education program. We are blessed with an educationally

sound program with top notch experienced boaters as instructors. Items you contribute will be raffled off to provide

funding for the education program—whether it is for hardware such as computer/projectors or scholarships for

members. Bring your items to Rita Buck so she can showcase them for a good cause!

But wait. There is another Happy Thanksgiving for the squadron. Mary Strohmeier and her committee did a fabulous

job is providing us with a highly qualified slate of officers for next year. Mary is most persuasive with with her infec-

tious smile and twinkling eyes. Thanks to you, Mary, and your committee! Members will be asked to vote on this

slate at the Christmas Party. See you there!

The Last Run…

I was visiting my neighbor, Dorothy, who lives down our road. She and her late husband, Clifford ran the ferry for many years. This ferry, the Neebish Islander, was used to haul cars, trucks, and trailers, and was the link between the island and mainland. I will go back some fifty years when the ferry, unlike our current Neebish Islander II, could haul five cars if packed tightly. It seemed that if more than two cars went on the ferry Cliff would have to guide them, sandwiched within inches of each other. The ferry was small by our current standards but this was how vehicles made it to and from Neebish Island. The operator, Cliff, and Dorothy who decked, worked seven days a week, in good weather and bad. They had to be available for emergencies around the clock since the ferry was the islanders’ lifeline. This system still applies. The only time the ferry would not be operating would be under seri-ous weather conditions, mechanical problems, and ice jams. In other words, the operator and his wife worked to-wards the light at the end of the tunnel, that being the end of the season.

The middle of January would bring the closing of the locks in Sault Sainte Marie. Freighter traffic would stop and this action allowed the ice to form across the waterway. Five inches of blue ice was required to create a safe ice bridge that joined the mainland to Neebish. When the bridge was tested for thickness and deemed safe, the ferry operator would let the residents know that the service would be stopped, usually at the end of the week.

This was that light at the end of the tunnel, the long awaited break from the daily and often unpredictable work of the operator and his wife. It was like the proverbial carrot dangling just out of reach and finally, being able to grasp it.

Many winters brought early ice and the icebreakers would try to keep the channel open for the freighters as they fought their way down river for their final runs. A side effect was the creation of thick blocks of ice that would fol-low the current but usually jammed up in the turns of the river. Every night low temperatures would create more ice. The fridged temperatures were hard on the ferry’s engine. Cliff would have a more difficult time starting the ferry, the controls would be stiff to operate, and the loading ramps would freeze up. But there was that light at the end of the tunnel, an almost tangible entity that was just barely out of reach but oh, so close.

After a long, unending year of work the ferry was on her final run home, she would be winterized, secured, and shut down till spring break out. The run was over a mile long through large, broken, blocks of blue ice. The opera-tor was watching for signs of open water so he could sneak through and reach his home dock. Unfortunately, the river ice was not moving with the current. The ice was slowly and methodically building up and shelving over the already jammed surface. The ferry was inching her way ever so slowly, finally it could no longer move and was locked into the ice jam. But Cliff feared something entirely different had happened. His years of experience told him that he had no power, the engine was running, but the feeling of surge through his feet was missing. He was sure the ferry had lost its propeller. After shutting off the engine he stepped down on to the deck and looked over to his wife who was bundled up like a dressed up snowman, Cliff shook his head and grabbed the anchor. Dorothy feared the worst and did not understand everything yet, but she sensed it was bad.

The anchor was dropped over the side onto the broken ice. Then both parties climbed over the railing and start-ed walking home carrying the anchor while extending the rode to its limits. Here the ferry sat, jammed into the rough blocks of thick ice, resting at an odd angle, unmoving. Their walk home was quiet and worrisome. Cliff’s im-mediate problem was how to get the boat into its berth. This was accomplished with a large road grader, brought down to the river’s edge and a long, steel cable tied to the ferry. With patience and a lot of work, the ferry was pulled home. The next day a diver went down to look at the prop shaft only to find the propeller was hanging on the very last thread. The problem was easily corrected and all was well. The ever-evasive carrot had finally been caught and the couple had several months of rest from their duties to await spring, and another ice break up and break out on the Saint Mary’s River.
