Introduction

Over the years, human resource management has developed into a strategic process through

which the overall performance of the organization can be increased. Initially, the labor force

was not as seriously in the operations of an organization and therefore the concepts such as job

satisfaction of employees, their self esteem, their working capabilities were not taken into

account. However, the experience over the years of corporation and businesses and also the

research and development processes have helped bring into the limelight the importance of

human resource management as an application and also as a theory.

Proposed Topic:

For the Human resource management dissertation, the following topic has been proposed,

“Employee recognition programs and their impact of the performance of Tesco”

Dessler (2009) says that the basic functions of human resource management are planning,

organizing, staffing, leading and controlling the employees. However, Mathis and Jackson

(2008) say that people usually are not happy with the existence of human resource

management in their lives. The reason of this holding true being the notion that human

resource management has a bureaucratic function which stretches the performance of the

employee beyond their capabilities. Programs such as the employee recognition ones and

similar others then seek to balance out this notion of human resource management and

confirms the fact that human resource management is actually present to help the employee in

recognizing their abilities and in the organization overall in recognizing the efforts of the

employees.

The proposed research paper is going to study the theory of such programs specifically and of

the human resource function generally and then relate the theory to the application on Tesco.

The research will be a combination of primary and secondary data collection. This will be

focused upon later in the paper.

Proposed Research Methodology

The research methodology will have two basic parts. The first part is going to focus on collecting

the secondary data and theory about human resource management, employee recognition

programs and Tesco’s human resource management applications and reputation. The research

is going to be both qualitative and quantitative in its approach.

Primary data collection

For the primary data collection, the idea is to conduct two questionnaire surveys. The first

questionnaire survey will be directed towards the general public and will seek to analyze the

importance of employee recognition programs in organizations. This will be the non expert part

of opinion on employee recognition programs. The questionnaire are going to be in multiple

choices formats so that the participants do not have troubles filling them out and also so that

the ease of analyzing the results of the questionnaire are maintained.

The second set of questionnaires will be directed towards the employees of Tesco and will seek

to understand what employee recognition programs are currently being employed in the

organization and what are their impacts with respect to the opinion of the employees of the

organization are.

The results of the questionnaire will be analyzed in computer software to avoid human error

and the analysis will be done on the basis of graphical representations.

Secondary Data Collection

The secondary data collection will be presented in the form of literature review in the proposed

research paper and will be collected by online books and journals. The fortunate thing here is

the fact that online libraries are rich with human resource management and related literature.

Moreover, even in regards to Tesco, literature will be available. The reasons for this availability

of literature being two in number! The first one being the fact that Tesco has a long history and

therefore, documentation of its practices and experiences is available. Secondly, Tesco is

currently the market leader of in the United Kingdom and also as its branches all over the

world. This strategic importance of Tesco has influenced the researchers and writers as well as

documenters to save the experiences of Tesco. All that documentation then is going to be of aid

in this paper.

Ethics being taken into account

As far as the secondary research is concerned, no ethical issues will form an obstacle in the

conduction of the proposed research. In the primary data collection however, the participants

will not be asked to fill out their personal information and will also be informed of the true

nature of the questionnaire. This would cater to both the problems of deception and

confidentiality. Thus, overall, ethical issues are not expected to be a strong factor in influencing

the paper.

Reliability and Validity of the Proposed Paper

It is expected that the paper is going to be reliable because it will analyze the primary data in

the light of the expert opinion in the shape of literature review. Moreover, it is assumed that

the participants will be honest in their replies and thus, the primary findings can be analyzed

without the fear of biased data sets.

In the terms of educational and application purposes, this paper is expected to be valid and

credible since employee recognition programs are becoming a new norm in various

organizations owing to the tough competition in the labor market. Moreover, in theory, the

findings will always remain a vital analysis tool of research.

Schedule

Following will be the order of actions for the proposed research:

i) Collection and analysis of literature

ii) Formation of questionnaires

iii) Getting the questionnaire filled

iv) Analyzing the results of the primary data

v) Compilation of the report

Conclusion

This paper presented a brief plan of the human resource management dissertation. The idea is

to analyze the significance and impact of employee recognition programs and for the sake of

specificity, Tesco has been chosen as a case study whose employees will be studied for the

employee recognition programs currently available in the organization and their impact and

what according to the employees should be added to the human resource management

programs of the organization to improve the overall performance and satisfaction of both the

employees and the organization.

Finally, the proposed paper is going to present recommendations for the organization.
