Kicking off the 2009–2010 year with a suite of vibrant publications, the School rolled out its marketing effort with an entirely new identity system, a fresh, new “viewbook” and a pocket-size student admissions piece to attract prospective families and students. Last year’s Annual Report initiated an innovative, new design for the publication, with a friendly format that is now in place for the School’s magazines and annual reports.

Overall, in 2009–2010 Head-Royce School raised an inspirational $3.1 million for all funds. As the economy was beginning to emerge from a devastating downturn, hundreds of volunteers gave countless hours of their time to work passionately on behalf of the School. Without their tireless work, we could not have achieved this remarkable total.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all who gave their wealth, work, and wisdom, making 2009–2010 a year of great successes and ensuring the stability and sustainability of our leading-edge, 123-year-old school!

In Paul’s honor, the Board launched a one-year scholarship endowment campaign to establish a Paul Chapman Distinguished Scholarship and to augment other endowed scholarship funds at the School. Setting the initial goal at $260,000, the Board was inspired by a $200,000 challenge grant from the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation and Laurie and Alan Dachs. And, more than three decades of Head-Royce families, alumni, grandparents, and friends of the School responded to the challenge with tribute dona-tions in an outpouring of support, wrapping up the campaign with a whopping total of $926,000! Paul was deeply moved by this enormous, community-wide endorsement and expression of appreciation for his years of service.

With a Head-Royce Annual Fund goal of $825,000, bolstered by a $50,000 challenge (the second half of a two-year, anonymous grant), the School ramped up its develop-ment efforts by creating a personalized, one-to-one approach, reaching out to parents,

and recent alumni, as well as employees and past parents. More than 50 volunteers rallied to connect with their peers, and the School was able to end the year with record gifts of $848,000 to the Annual Fund—and 100% employee and Board participation, and 87% parent participation!

A stellar fundraising year for Heads Up, the School’s partner-ship program with the Oakland Unified School District, yielded $241,000, a 25% increase over the program’s fundraising goal for the year.

Technology is becoming increasingly important to every aspect of the School’s activities, and in 2009–2010 Head-Royce raised $172,000 through online giving, setting a new record and dou-bling the previous year’s total.

After 26 years at the helm, Head of School Paul Chapman retired on June 30, 2010. The entire Head-Royce community set out to ensure that Paul’s last year would make him proud. Over the months, Head-Royce held numerous activities that gave its community the opportunity for well wishing. The events that celebrated Paul culminated on May 22 with a gala coordinated by past parent Jennifer Walker with a host of dedicated volunteers.

endowment status as of June 30, 2010In Fiscal Year 2009–2010, total contributions to the Head-Royce permanently restricted endowment were $1,103,888. Endowment transfers to the School’s operating fund amounted to $551,703. The average one-year return on the endowment investment was 2.5%, and the overall market value of the endow-ment reached $13,787,840 on June 30, 2010.

Head-Royce Annual Fund : : Donors by Level

To provide for Head-Royce School’s most urgent and vital needs, the School reaches out to its entire community for critical support to provide for what tuition dollars alone do not cover. The Head-Royce Annual Fund ensures that funding is available for need-based scholarships, faculty and professional development grants, and support for student programs, including such extracurricular activities as athletics, art, music, and numerous other enrichment programs.

Through the passionate and dedicated efforts of Annual Fund Co-chairs Terry Tao, Laurence Pelosi, and Helaine Schweitzer, along with the Annual Fund Council and the Leadership Council captains and volunteers, Head-Royce appealed to parents, alumni, past parents, grandparents, and friends. Gifts in the fall were matched by the second half of a generous, anonymous $100,000 challenge grant made to motivate the community to step up. And step up it did!

With profound thanks for this important challenge and all of the hard work of the Annual Fund volunteer leadership, the School achieved record giving to the Annual Fund. By June 30, 2010, a total of 932 donors had contributed $848,000—exceeding the Annual Fund goal by $23,000!

Endowment : : New Funds

Over the years, numerous donors have generously established funds as a permanent legacy to the School. As each fund reaches $50,000, a percentage of its earnings supports the designated purpose that was defined by the donor. Endowed funds may be unrestricted or restricted to help support faculty, student scholarships, programs, facilities, and Heads Up (the School’s partnership program with the Oakland Unified School District).

In 2009–2010, Head-Royce established three new named endowment funds.

Paul Chapman Distinguished Scholarship

In 2009–10, the entire Head-Royce community came together to honor retiring Head of School Paul Chapman and created an endowed fund in his name. Donors to Chapman Campaign for Distinguished Scholarship could contribute directly to the fund named in Paul’s honor or to any other endowed scholarship fund at the School. The Campaign raised $926,000 as a tribute to Paul and his extraordinary accomplishments during his 26 years as Head of School, 1984 through 2010.

Class of 2010 Scholarship Endowment

Parents and graduates of the Class of 2010, following in the tradition of senior classes since 2003, donated $70,000 to create an endowed scholarship fund as their legacy to Head-Royce. We express our sincere appreciation to all of the parents and students who gave so generously to establish this important endowed scholarship.

Jennifer Burnett Harris ’48 Scholarship

Through her visionary estate planning, the late Jennifer Burnett Harris ’48, made a bequest to Head-Royce School of $207,000. An Anna Head School alumna, Jennifer Harris had a lifelong love of reading and was a great supporter of education. Her generosity to the School will ensure that generations of worthy students will be able to attend Head-Royce. The Jennifer Burnett Harris ’48 Scholarship will be awarded to Upper School boys or girls based on need, with preference for students with a legacy connection to the School.

Paul Chapman retired on June 30, 2010 after 26 years as Head of School. To recognize his outstanding service to Head-Royce School, the Board launched a tribute campaign in order to give the community the opportunity to honor Paul. Because he believes so strongly that every qualified student should have access to the School, Paul expressed his wish that the community raise funds for endowed scholarships.

The School is deeply grateful to Chapman Campaign Co-chairs Betsy Crabtree, current Board member and mother of Brady ’12 and Jack ’16 Hirsch; and Jim Fousekis, father of Natalie ’86 and Sara ’89, for their dedicated year-long effort. At the end of the year, the Head-Royce community paid tribute to Paul at various events and programs, and the entire school family reached out to express its appre-ciation for Paul’s extraordinary accomplishments during his tenure. Exceeding the Campaign’s initial goal of $260,000, a total of 579 Head-Royce donors contributed an inspirational $926,000, which includes gifts to the Paul Chapman Distinguished Scholarship Fund and new donations to any of the School’s other endowed scholarship funds.

The success of this campaign was sparked by a magnanimous $200,000 challenge grant made by the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation and Laurie and Alan Dachs. In addition, the Head-Royce Parents Association contributed $65,000 of its total net profits to the Chapman Scholarship Fund. With deepest gratitude to the Bechtel and Dachs families, the Parents Association, and all of the donors to the Campaign, we list all contributors below.

Parents Association Auction : : Night in Havana: Una Gala Picante

Nearly 400 people packed the Claremont Hotel’s Claremont Ballroom for last year’s Havana-themed auction, which netted $156,000. Of the proceeds, $130,000 was split equally between the endowed Paul Chapman Distinguished Scholarship Fund and the Parents Association Endowed Professional Development Fund. And in a profound gesture of support, $26,000 was raised through “Paddles Up” for financial aid for current Head-Royce families.

A large and dedicated committee worked on the many parts of the auction, which was ably chaired by Upper School parent Natasha Miller. She was joined by Live Auction Co-chairs Lisa Settlemier and Laurence Pelosi, Online Auction Chair Kim Epstein, Silent Auction Co-chairs Eva Camp and Blakely Atherton, and dozens of leadership volunteers whose long hours of tireless work ensured that the event was a financial success—and a sell out! At the event, the Head-Royce community rocked to the salsa beat of Cuban band Fito Reinoso y su Ritmo y Armonia, with Head-Royce parent Orlando Torriente. Special guest Rita Moreno, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award-winner, “worked the room” with the evening’s host Renee Richardson, KFOG radio’s morning show personality at the mic.

The Anna Head Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 2002, through the generosity of several Class of 1956 Anna Head alumnae, to honor the School’s Founder Miss Anna Head. Contributions to this permanently endowed fund support current Head-Royce Students through scholarship aid.

This fund accepts donations in honor or in memory of either Anna Head or Head-Royce alumni, parents, family or friends of the School. Donations may be made by an individual or collectively by a class, group, or family.

Heads Up Program : : Donors

Heads Up was founded in 1987 through a partnership between the Oakland Unified School District and Head-Royce School. The program is the cornerstone of Head-Royce’s effort to promote civic purpose and help create a broader community of academically prepared, high achieving, socially responsible youth. As its primary goal, the Heads Up program works with students throughout their middle school years, keeping them enthusiastic about learning and providing academic and social guidance. Throughout the years, donations to the program have provided educational enrichment and mentoring for more than 700 low-income public school youth in grades six though eight, and in 2009–2010 helped to support an enrollment of 92 students who participated in a six-week summer session followed by monthly academic support throughout the school year.

Through the generosity of numerous foundations and individual donors, Heads Up fundraising reached $241,264, exceeding the original goal by nearly $60,000—a remarkable achievement! Of this total, $13,800 was raised through the Walkathon (with thanks to event co-chairs Elizabeth Glenewinkel, Susan McCully, and Marcia Pillon) while the Heads Up “Big Night Out” event brought in $75,270.

Alumni Giving

In 2009–2010, a total of 323 alumni donors contributed to Head-Royce, representing 22% of all donors to the School. Alumni stepped up to honor the retirements of Paul Chapman, Judy Kennedy, and Jeff Key through generous tribute gifts. Alumni giving to the Annual Fund increased to $91,000 in 2009–2010, and total dollars to all funds reached $419,702. The School remains deeply grateful to its loyal alumni for their strong commitment to ensure that Head- Royce can continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities to today’s students and maintain its excellent academic reputation regionally and nationally.

Gifts in Honor

Recognizing a special student, alum, teacher, staff member, parent, grandparent, or friend with a gift to Head-Royce is a meaningful way to express appreciation for that individual while making a difference to the School. A memorial gift to Head-Royce pays respect to a loved one or friend. In the case of memorial gifts that are not designated for a specific fund, Head-Royce has a long-standing tradition of placing these donations in the School’s endowed scholarship fund. When a memorial donation is made, the School informs the deceased individual’s family about the memorial gift without mention of the value of the contribution.

Individuals who inform Head-Royce of their intention to make a gift to the School from their estate are invited to become members of the Anna & Josiah Legacy Society. The Society was named for the School’s founder, Miss Anna Head, and her brother-in-law Josiah Royce, who was a Harvard professor and philosopher. Planned gifts provide a vital legacy for Head-Royce; these gifts are invested in the School’s unrestricted endowment fund unless otherwise restricted. Head-Royce greatly values the visionary leadership of planned giving donors.
