Founded in 1887, Head‑Royce is an independent, non‑denominational, coeducational, college‑preparatory K–12 school, which offers a challenging educational program to educate the whole child. The school nurtures the development of each individual student through a program that seeks:
» to develop intellectual abilities such as scholarship and disciplined, critical thinking;
» to foster in each student respect, integrity, ethical behavior, compassion and a sense of humor;
» to promote responsibility and leadership, an appreciation of individual and cultural differences and a respect for the opinions of others;
» to nurture aesthetic abilities such as creativity, imagination, musical and visual talent; and
» to encourage joyful, healthy living; a love of nature; and physical fitness.
All members of the Head‑Royce community strive to create an educational environment that reflects the school’s core values of academic excellence, diversity and citizenship, and one in which each student can thrive. We believe that a program based on these core values will prepare our students to be effective global citizens as they face and embrace the challenges and the opportunities of the future.
The mission of Head‑Royce School is to inspire in our students a lifelong love of learning and pursuit of academic excellence, to promote understanding of and respect for diversity that makes our society strong and to encourage active and responsible global citizenship.
The 2013–2014 Annual Report includes all donations received by Head-Royce School between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. Please know that every attempt was made to ensure the accuracy of this report. However, errors do occur and we wish to apologize for any inconvenience they may cause. For corrections, please contact the Head-Royce Advancement Office at 510.228.1548 or [email protected].

The Importance of GratitudeThanksgiving, by far, is my favorite time of the year. First, it is a time for family. As I was growing up in Newport, R.I., my family shared Thanksgiving dinner with another family for 35 years in a row. Each year we shared stories, watched football, cooked and ate—simple moments that served as the backdrop for our parents, who watched their children grow into adults, go off to college, get married and eventually introduce children of our own into the wonderfully chaotic mix. Since my own family moved here five years ago, we have been ‘adopted’ by another set of families and now have started again, this time with a much larger tribe of grandparents, parents, friends and children.
Second, it is a time to say thank you. It is a time to slow down and reflect with gratitude on all that we have that is not material. Instead of kids talking about material items recently acquired or that may be on their holiday wish list, we talk about our health, our family, our friends and our ability to be together. It is a powerful moment for our children to understand how important they are to us and how important we are to them. It is a time for us all to remember that the ties that bind us are multi-generational.
With this as the backdrop, as Head of School, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Your giving and the generosity of the broader Head-Royce community is substantial. This annual report reflects a wide range of people—spanning generations and backgrounds—who have decided that Head-Royce School is an enterprise
2
worthy of support. This report reflects our community’s confidence in and commitment to the school and our profoundly important mission of educating young children. I am, indeed, very thankful for the giving of our community.
Finally, if there is one main takeaway for you after reading this report, it is this: look carefully at the names and the faces. While the numbers are critically important to our ongoing attainment of excellence, the people behind the numbers and the children whom we are supporting are what truly make this such a special school. The individual names and faces make up our community, and the community is what makes us strong.
I look forward to seeing you here on campus soon.
Sincerely,
Rob
Robert A. Lake head of school

Annual Report 2013–2014 5
Each year, we choose a theme to explore with faculty and students. In 2013–14, we selected Citizenship, one of the three core components of our mission, articulated as “encouraging constructive and responsible global citizenship.” From the youngest kindergartners to the graduating seniors, our students engaged in coursework, conversation and reflection about the nature of citizenship and community.
Everyone at Head-Royce, from classroom teachers to office staff—embraces the mission and seeks to instill these values in our students. Today’s generation of Head-Royce students—your children and grandchildren—are the fortunate beneficiaries of your generosity. Your gifts make the difference in our ability to provide an exemplary educational experience.
This Annual Report is for you, our donors, to recognize all you have done to support our students, faculty, and curriculum so that we may educate the next generation of scientists, doctors, artists, programmers and the thousands of future careers that do not exist yet but for which we believe our students will be prepared.
Thank you for partnering with us on this journey and for your generous support.

SeptemberSIXTH GRADERS GO HIGH-TECH
Lift-off! With much anticipation, the sixth grade team launched the school’s 1:1 iPad initiative, the first of its kind at Head-Royce School.
OctoberMIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS VISIT GOOGLE SCIENCE FAIR
Four Middle School students attended the Google science fair at the company’s Mountain View campus. The students were impressed with the inventions, creativity and imagination that went into building something new. They were also struck by the passion that the participants showed toward making the world a better place, whether by cleaning polluted water, developing
better treatments for cancer or making bio-plastics out of discarded banana peels.
SOPHOMORE BOAT RACES DRAW CROWD
Students from each division tried to get a view of the pool to witness the fifth annual Boat Race, a tradition started by 10th Grade Dean Saya McKenna, who participated in a similar event when she was in high school.
“Every year some rule-bending or controversy crops up. The first year we had one student dive in to the pool and swim the length with liter bottles duct taped to her back. This year we were plagued by a paddle DQ,” she said. “I love how the Lower School and Middle School students have become avid observers—this means that when they arrive in the high school, they’ll feel a sense of ownership and high stakes anticipation.”
It’s nearly impossible to catalog everything that occurs on campus. In any given day, there are thousands of things happening—from “ah‑ha!” moments in the classroom to magical exchanges between friends that cement lifelong friendships. The generosity of our donors is evident in the richness and diversity of the Head‑Royce experience. Here are a few snapshots of happenings during the 2013–14 school year:

November LEARNING ABOUT LINKEDIN
Troy Cosey ’06 came to campus to speak with the senior class about his experiences since graduation and his current role as a program manager for LinkedIn. While most people think of LinkedIn as a social network for working professionals, Troy explained that it is becoming increasingly relevant for students and can be a great resource for deciding where to attend college and helping to secure summer internships.
SIXTH GRADERS LEARN THROUGH SERVICE
Middle Schoolers all participate in service learning, tied to the academic subjects they study. On November 15, the Walters/Stark homeroom went to the Sunol Agricultural Park. Students cleared old irrigation lines and helped one of Sunol’s farmers harvest different types of squash. The sixth graders had a blast learning about and experiencing the joys and rigors of sustainable farming on a crisp fall day.
DecemberSHAKESPEARE ACTORS VISIT HRS
Two actors from the highly acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival visited Head-Royce to perform and conduct workshops for students. The workshops were on-your-feet explorations of characters, language and themes from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, with particular attention to the relationships between Prospero/Ariel and Prospero/Caliban.
BRAINS AND BIG KIDS
Fifth graders took a field trip to the US Neurobiology lab where they had the opportunity to touch and hold real human
brain specimens in mini-lessons designed especially for them by senior students. The activity dovetailed with one of the favorite fifth grade science units, “The Mind that is Mine,” in which students learn not only about their own brain physiology but also about their personal learning styles, strengths and weaknesses. For the past 10 years the fifth graders have enjoyed interacting with the seniors during this annual activity.
JanuarySECOND GRADERS BUILD ADOBE HOUSES
Second grade classes built their own model adobe houses, the culmination of the “Homes Around The World” science unit. Over several lessons, students explored the fascinating properties and history of adobe, made their own bricks in ice cube trays, planned their designs and ultimately made their own homes in small groups. Imagination, cooperation, compromise, aesthetic and structural decisions—as well as hands covered in gooey mud—were on full display!
GREEN TEAM ENCOURAGES UTENSIL RE-USE
To encourage sustainable actions, the school’s Green Teams produced simple (yet elegant) cloth utensil carrying cases for students and faculty that would make the effort to reuse their own utensils when eating on campus. LS Science teacher and HRS Sustainability Coordinator, Debra Harper, trained and supervised the use of simple, portable sewing machines for the fifth grade and MS green teams. “It is a good example of citizenship,” said Harper. “They are doing something for our community and the environment.”

FebruaryROBOHAWKS TEAMS RANK HIGH IN WORLD STANDINGS
Jayhawks established themselves as some of the best robotics teams in the world after a February 22 tournament that was part of the international Vex Robotics program, which sponsors competitions among 7,000 teams in 25 countries. In the first robotics tournament hosted by Head-Royce, 20 Northern California teams competed in the East Bay Skills and Programming Skills Challenge, one of thousands of competitions held worldwide. Due to a stellar result in the recent tournament, the top finishing Head-Royce Robohawks team is currently in third place in the world.
March CARAVAN CAPTIVATES YOSHI’S AUDIENCE
The Caravan jazz ensemble packed the house at its annual showcase at Yoshi’s Jazz Club. The performance featured special guest artist Sean Noble Flannery from Eugene, Ore. on the tenor sax. Sean, an adjunct instructor of saxophone at Willamette University in Salem, Ore., has toured extensively with disco, rock and salsa groups as well as the swing-and-ska band Cherry Poppin’ Daddies that was popular in the 1990s.
PARENT SHOWS HOW MATH RELATES TO IMAGING
Seventh-grade parent, Dr. Dani Ushizima, spoke to math and photography students to explain some of her research at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. Her work focuses on image analysis and pattern recognition as it applies to a variety of scientific domains.
She connected the mathematics that students are learning in class to how images (essentially digital matrices) are processed and manipulated by computers, including popular apps many students use on their phones.
AprilK–12 FAMILY GROUPS
For the first time, this year K–12 “family” groups began, which included students from all divisions mixed into 17 groups. On April 24, the family groups gathered for the building of Canstruction® sculptures, an activity that combined citizenship, engineering, creativity and service learning. The groups met initially to get to know each other and plan their designs, then they regrouped weeks later to build their can-sculptures. After the project, the cans were donated to the Alameda County Community

Food Bank, amounting to 5,247 pounds of food, enough for nearly 4,400 meals. It was one of food bank’s top drives of the year!
CONNECTING WITH FRUITVALE COMMUNITY
Students in fifth-grade Spanish went on a field trip to connect with the Fruitvale community and gain new experiences in ecological regeneration, mindfulness, non-violent activism and applying their Spanish conversation skills!
MayTHIRD GRADERS HIT THE TRAIL
In the spring, third grade classrooms were abuzz with pioneer fever while learning about the emigrants’ experience along the Oregon/California Trail in the mid-1800s, with special attention paid to the journey of the Donner Party. The culmination of the unit is “hitting the trail” in Joaquin Miller Park. During this mini re-enactment of the journey west, students packed wagons—in our case, red wagons!—and navigate the ups and downs of the terrain on a two-mile long loop trail.
MAKER FAIRE INSPIRES STUDENTS
With funding from the school’s Institute for Applied Learning, six Upper School students attended the Maker Faire in San Mateo on Sunday, May 18. The students came away from the giant hands-on expo where technology, science, art and craft intersect in unusual and captivating ways inspired to create, hack and make their own projects. The Institute provides chances for creativity and opportunity to meet and helps students to see how they can follow their dreams. The Maker Faire offered the opportunity for them to not only experience interesting things, but also the people behind those objects who have taken their ideas and made something tangible out of them.

Parent Giving
In the spring a generous family stepped forward and issued a challenge: If Head‑Royce achieved 85% parent participation by May 15, we would receive an additional $25,000. We surpassed this goal and eventually reached 88% participation by the end of the fiscal year. Thank you to this generous family and everyone who contributed!

We were delighted to see more than 400 alumni at events across the country last year. From regional cocktail parties, to local holiday celebrations and alumni weekend festivities, alumni came together to renew old friendships and make new connections. We thank all of you who made Head‑Royce a philanthropic priority—alumni donations were up 6 percent over the previous year.

“Giving to the Head‑Royce annual fund seems like an obvious choice for me. As an alumna, faculty member and parent of a first grader, I am keenly aware of how important it is to show my support of the school and how these funds help the school thrive. I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of the Head‑Royce community and to see how the school continues to evolve.”

Grandparent Giving
Grandparents play a special role at Head‑Royce and we were excited to host Grandparents Day on March 4, 2014. Over 250 grandparents joined us on campus for performances by Da Capo, FADE, the sixth grade chorus and more, followed by classroom visits.

Since 1987, Heads Up has provided tuition‑free academic enrichment and support for underserved middle school students of color from Oakland Unified School District, preparing them for lives of academic success and civic engagement. In 2013–14 you gave more than $170,000 to support this critical program through a combination of individual gifts, foundation grants, the Walkathon and a benefit fundraiser—Big Night Out.
We especially want to highlight the Quest Foundation, which provided a matching grant of $25,000 this year. We are very grateful for the community of donors who made this match possible.
Thank you for supporting Heads Up!

“For students who live in the flat-lands of Oakland, Heads Up represents the access and opportunity that all young people dream of. This program is transformative— by the end, Heads Up students interface differently with their peers, family and community. Our program helps Oakland youth fall in love with learning, as well as feeling prepared and successful in school. More importantly, this program cultivates a love of learning that takes place with 21st century technology, with experienced teachers, and through natural discourse with self-motivated peers— privileges that are not always afforded to students in their neighborhood schools.”

Annual Report 2013–2014 57
Profile in Giving
Elena has worn many hats over the years in relation to Head‑Royce: student, alumna, parent, Alumni Council president and 11‑year member of the Board of Trustees. But it is, perhaps, her 26 years of consecutive giving that provides the most tangible evidence of her dedication to the school’s past, present and future.
How did you come to attend Anna Head School for Girls?
My mother’s best friend, Margaret Nichols Hayden ’27, grew up in Hawaii and was a boarding student at Anna Head. My mom wanted my older sister and me to follow in her friend’s footsteps. And it was a fabulous education—I felt so privileged to have that learning experience and supportive environment. There were only 27 girls in my whole graduating class—it was very small and we knew everyone in kindergarten through 12th grade.
You made your first donation to Head‑Royce in 1988 and have given for 26 consecutive years! Do you remember what inspired you to make your first gift?
At that time I had just graduated from dental hygiene school and I was embarking on a new career. I was probably reflecting back on how
instrumental my Head-Royce education had been and also, frankly, it was likely the first time I was earning a paycheck that allowed me to spare a few dollars!
Around that same time I started wanting to rekindle old friendships and I joined the Alumni Council. I didn’t have a lot of money to give back then but I did have time—we would hold phonathons at a lovely real estate office in Montclair and call our classmates alongside parent volunteers making their annual fund calls. It was a lot of fun; we would ring a bell when we got new donations and run up to the front to tally our calls on the board.
Did your relationship to the school shift when your daughter began to attend Head‑Royce?
When our daughter (Pippa O’Brien ’14) began kindergarten at Head-Royce we were thrilled. I enjoyed re-living Head-Royce through her eyes—the rigorous academics, the caring environment
Elena Ortega ’71, Parent ’14

and the lifelong friends she developed. During her years as a student I became much more involved, becoming Alumni Council president, joining the Learning Differences Network, and spending 11 years on the Board of Trustees. My final Board term ended before Pippa graduated in 2014. She’s now in her freshman year at Elon College in North Carolina and I am still very much a proud Head-Royce parent—that has not changed one bit.
How did your service as a Trustee impact your understanding of philanthropy?
I think being a Trustee provided a broader perspective of the school, beyond my own personal experience as an alumna and parent. I could see the “need” more deeply. For example, I realized we have these fabulous teachers who deserve to be paid salaries and benefits that are competitive with our benchmark schools.
I also got to see the inner workings of what it takes to run the school financially. I remember (past chair) Betsy Crabtree made a great analogy in her remarks at Back-to-School Night. She said, “It’s like we offer our students a basic, nutritious, balanced meal—that’s what our tuition pays for. But if we want to also serve the kids an appetizer and dessert, that’s where the Annual Fund comes in. It provides all the little extra things that make our school amazing.” That speech really got me thinking more deeply about donating.
Now that your daughter (Pippa ’14) has graduated, do you have a new perspective?
As the parents of an alumna, Frank (O’Brien, her husband) and I will always have Head-Royce in our hearts. Staying connected to the school and to other parents is really important to us. Our giving is no different—our number one family value is a commitment to education and it just makes us feel good to continue supporting the school.
I also think it’s important to teach philanthropy to the next generation. My parents gave to many organizations but we didn’t talk about it growing up. Even if kids can’t give a lot when they graduate, it’s the act of giving back that’s important. A lot of grants and funders look at participation (regardless of gift size) as a sign that the school has a groundswell of community support.

“I have used the Tan Chair on a vast array of things,
experiences, and programs and I am so grateful.
I think it has informed my teaching, and also led me
to innovate in unexpected ways. I think I am also
more aware of opportunities that my students or
students of the STEM institute can benefit from, and
as a result I think that the chair has affected more
than just me—which is just so wonderful. Thank you,

“Over the last year I participated in the BATDC
yearlong Women in Leadership where I was able to
connect with other women from Bay Area schools.
Groups like this are important to keep us connected
to what is happening in the larger Bay Area
independent school community.
I am so appreciative that the Charlotte Rose Frey
Chair has allowed me to participate in this group
and to connect with a circle of colleagues outside
my own school.”

Bequests ReceivedEstate of Marjorie

Estate of Lucille Mast Fritter ’30
Individuals who inform Head‑Royce of their intention to make a gift to the school from their estate are invited to become members of the Anna & Josiah Legacy Society. The society honors, and gratefully acknowledges the generosity of individuals who include Head‑Royce in their estate plans. Many donors can make a more substantial gift to Head‑Royce through deferred giving than through an outright contribution. Bequests, large and small, offer a significant source of support to Head‑Royce, and make a lasting contribution to the school.

Jayhawk Events & Adventures Item DonorsThe 2014 Auction, Jayhawk Events & Adventures took place entirely online and was comprised of parent parties and other special items. More than $77,000 was raised to support special projects at Head‑Royce.
Thank you so much to the generous parents and faculty who donated items, hosted parties, and helped coordinate this fundraiser. We also want to thank our generous bidders who purchased these items. One of our goals was to create opportunities for community members to meet and mingle, and the events brought together parents, alumni and faculty—allowing them to bond over shared interests during the events and adventures.
The proceeds from the 2014 auction supported the Parents’ Association Faculty Fund for Professional Development, faculty scholarships for global travel, improvements for the Lower School Butterfly Garden, updated Lower School classroom reading libraries, bulletin boards to showcase student work in the Middle School hallway and new umbrellas for the Upper School patio.
