Despite China’s refusal to approve Syngenta’s GMOseed, Syngenta continued to sell its seed to U.S.corn farmers. When China banned U.S. corn imports, the price of corn fell dramatically, and corn farmersacross the country lost BILLIONS of dollars.

Our team represented over 2000 individual farmers in the Rice GMO claim. We opposed the classaction and secured more for the farmers we represented. Our group of lawyers will continuemeeting with farmers with respect to each farmer’s individual Syngenta claim.

Willowbrook man wins Be a Loser contestSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

BURR RIDGE – On Christ-mas, Nadar Najjar got a phonecall that he hope will lead to awhole new life.

The phone call he receivedwas from Bob Diamond, chiefclub officer at Five SeasonsFamily Sports Club in BurrRidge, who told him he had beenselected as this year’s winner ofthe club’s Be a Loser contest.

As the contest winner,Najjar will receive a yearlongfamily membership to Five Sea-sons Burr Ridge and other bene-fits with a total value of $12,000.

But more than the mone-tary value, what Najjar hopeswinning will mean for him isthat start of a healthier life.

The loser portion of the con-tests title refers to the contestsmission, which through a combi-nation of exercise, dietary chang-es and education of nutrition andfitness will help Najjar on theroad to significant weight loss.

Najjar, a 34-year-old fatherof five children, is a special ed-ucation instructor. Najjar waslooking for a one-day pass to theclub in November while surfingonline and discovered the Be aLoser contest entry page on theFive Season’s website.

According to Najjar, he has

added more than 120 pounds tohis 5-foot 8-inch frame over thepast 12 years.

“It was the middle of thenight and my entire family wasasleep and there I am assess-ing myself as a father and as ahusband,” Najjar recounted ina news release. “I was think-ing about how can I be the bestfather and husband that I canbe in the kind of shape I’m in?”

Figuring, what did he haveto lose except the weight,Najjar entered the contest.

Najjar said he used to bemore active. When he was a stu-dent at DePaul University, herode his bike all over Chicago. He took a job at a private schoolin Villa Park and after gettingmarried, became a father in2004, according to the release.

With his new roles and re-

sponsibilities, Najjar said hisexercise level decreased sig-nificantly, while he also start-ed eating more.

“I found I kept putting onweight and it kept going upand up and up,” he said. “OnceI got over 200 pounds, I startedfeeling lethargic. After awhile,I stopped weighing myself.”

As the years went by, morechildren and more responsibil-ity allowed him to feel he wastoo busy to spend time exercis-ing, he said. Now, he said, hischildren are one of his stron-gest motivations to gettingback in shape.

Through the program,Najjar will be coached by aFive Seasons fitness instruc-tor and keep a journal of all thefood and drinks that he con-sume in a day, with the goal ofgetting back to 140 pounds. Hiscurrent weight is 267 pounds.

The program includes twoone-hour training sessions aweek, an activity tracker, nu-trition counseling, fitness gearand a weekly goal-setting work-shop, according to the club.

Najjar was chosen fromeight applicants, including twomen and five women. Four, in-cluding Najjar, were namedfinalists and interviewed by

staff at the club.

Teacher institute day, holiday to be used for D-86makeup daysBy MATTHEW [email protected]

HINSDALE – Hinsdale

School District 86 announced

students will use Presidents

Day and a previously sched-

uled teacher institute day

to make up for two days the

school was closed in January

because of frigid tempera-

tures.

Both Hinsdale Central and

Hinsdale South high schools

closed because of low tempera-

tures and negative wind chills

Jan. 7 and 8.

District 86 Superintendent

Bruce Law said Presidents

Day was chosen instead of theMartin Luther King Jr. holi-day to give families advancednotice of the change in theschool calendar and to keepthe make up days as close tothe days the school was closedas possible, rather than addingon days at the end of the schoolyear.

“Just taking those days andtacking them onto the end ofthe school year is not the same[as not having been closed],”Law said Wednesday.

Parent asks for board todiscuss calender again

During audience comments

at the District 86 Board of

Education meeting Monday,

Burr Ridge resident Yvonne

Mayer asked the board to use

a future meeting to revisit

the idea of putting District 86

student on the same academic

calendar of Lyons Township

High School. Mayer said she

supports students having

their first semester final ex-

ams before going home for

winter break.

“I can’t begin to tell you the

stress and anxiety that having

finals after winter break caus-

es for students,” Mayer told

the board. “And that’s even

before you factor in the poten-

tial for bad weather.”

Mayer told board members

that having finals after winter

break causes students stress

because they delay studying

the first week of break. When

they return to class, the end of

the semester feels rushed and

there is the potential for school

to be closed for bad weather,

further limiting student’s time

to be taught by teachers and

prepare for end of semester

tests ahead of finals.

Four years ago, Mayer said,

the board explored putting stu-

dents on the same calendar as

Lyons Township High School,

but there was pushback from

the middle school parent com-

munity.

“It’s time to revisit this is-

sue again,” Mayer said.

Superintendent Law said

a calendar committee is cur-

rently working on creative

ways the school calendar can

changed to meet the various

desires of parents and is ex-

pected to bring a report to the

board in either April or May.

Law said in the past, input

from parents strongly showed

they did not want school to be-

gin in August, as Lyons Town-

ship does, with semesters of

an unequal amount of days of

class.

District 86 approves two advisory referendums to appear on April ballotBy MATTHEW [email protected]

HINSDALE – The District86 Board of Education ap-proved two advisory referen-dum questions to appear onthe April ballot at their regu-lar meeting Monday.

Board members approveda question that will ask vot-ers if the board should lob-by for a state law that wouldprohibit teachers from beingable to go on strike in a 4 to 2vote. Board President RichardSkoda and board members

Edward Corcoran, ClaudiaManley and Victor Casini vot-ed to approve the referendumquestion. Michael Kuhn and

Jennifer Planson voted no tothe referendum and Kay Gallovoted present.

Prior to the vote, Plansonsaid she would vote againstthe referendum because shebelieved such efforts by theschool board would be a wasteof both time and energy. She

said the board of educationwas elected to make suchdecisions and were capableof deciding to lobby withoutinput from the public. Theboard also had representa-tives who could lobby forthem, she added.

“We saw that voters didn’twant a strike,” Planson said.“We don’t need a referendumto know that.”

Some member of the pub-lic in attendance at the meet-ing clapped after her state-ment.

Skoda said the board’s lob-

bying efforts could consist ofwriting a letter to the schooldistricts state representatives.Skoda added that a memberof the public who spoke atduring public comments at themeeting had praised the dis-trict for allowing him to giveinput at the board through theballot box.

Corcoran said he believedthe question should be put tovoters because it was an is-sue that would outlast a boardmember’s four-year term.

Cronin touts economic progress in State of the County addressBy NATHAN LURZ

[email protected]

The future of DuPageCounty may look bright inmany ways, but there are stillmany challenges ahead, ac-cording to the county boardchairman.

In front of a crowd of elect-ed officials, chambers of com-merce and businesses, DanCronin gave an economicallyfocused State of the Countyaddress Thursday in Wo-odridge.

Cronin presented remarksand answered questions atthe event sponsored by coun-ty economic developmentorganization Choose DuP-age and supported by cham-bers in Woodridge, Downers

Grove, Darien, Hinsdale andLisle.

The Chairman said hewelcomed the opportunity todeliver such an address to somany in the business world, saying the “relationship be-tween DuPage and our busi-ness community is vital.”

And Cronin believed thatconnection was flourishing, touting a 4.5 percent unem-ployment rate, the lowest inthe region thanks to a con-scious effort to create a busi-ness-friendly environment,he said.

“I do think we at the coun-ty all join in a chorus of voic-es that really create a cultureout here in DuPage County... that does really and trulyconvey the message that ‘We

want your business, we sup-port business and we valueeconomic growth,” he said.

Cronin said manufactur-ing was climbing in the coun-ty, with 15 straight months ofindustrial vacancy rate dropsthrough May 2014, and heprojects a steady 3.75 percentgrowth in county sales tax rev-enue. The county also retainsa AAA bond rating from allthree major credit agencies, which is the case for fewerthan 1 percent of all countiesin the U.S., he said.

The county is intending toeliminate a quarter-cent salestax in 2016 as the malignedDuPage Water Commissiontransitions to a self-sustain-ing utility, a mirror of Cro-nin’s Accountability, Con-

solidation and Transparencyinitiative dedicated to reduc-ing the size and cost of localgovernment.

The ACT initiative’s suc-cesses are highlighted by thecounty’s continued commit-ment to a balanced budget, the 45 government jobs thathave been cut and more than$30.5 million the county hassaved under Cronin’s watch,he said.

“But our movement inDuPage is about more thancost cutting,” he said. “Weare in the business of grow-ing. Growing ideas, growinghigh-tech manufacturing, growing tomorrow’s busi-nesses.”

That is especially import-ant with the changing demo-graphics in the county, hesaid.

Nearly 175,000 residentsare considered low incomeby federal poverty standards, and more than 16 percent ofchildren in DuPage Countyare food insecure.

Cronin pointed specifical-

ly to the Rev3 tech and man-ufacturing incubator, the El-gin-O’Hare Western AccessProject, a new regional globalmarketing initiative to helpspur international exportsand a recent U.S. CommerceDepartment designation theregion will be eligible to ap-ply for $1.3 billion in federalgrants to support job cre-ation.

All would be important togive those in need “hand ups”and not “handouts,” he said.

Greg Bedalov, presidentand CEO of Choose DuPage, said the marketing initia-tive was especially excitingfor him, saying in 10 yearsworking in economic devel-opment, he had “never seenthe type of regional coopera-tion and collaboration that’shappening right now.”

He has high hopes areacounties will be able to worktogether even more to build amore stable economic futurethrough improved market-ing, transportation and in-vestment.

With the holiday enforce-ment period over, Hinsdalepolice have now turned theirattention toward Super Bowlweekend.

Children’s books receivenew look for patrons ofHinsdale Public Library

Early next month, the Caldecott Medal will be awarded tothe artist of the most distinguished American picture bookfor children. This honor is given annually by the Associationfor Library Service to Children, a division of the AmericanLibrary Association.

If you buy, borrow or readbooks to children, you’refamiliar with that embossedgold sticker on the front ofthose gorgeous picture books. What you may not have beenaware of is this distinctionis given to the artist. In thebest picture books, the story literally cannot be told withoutthe artwork. Librarians from around the country spend a yearlooking at as many examples as they can get their hands on toselect the best.

Another Caldecott criteria I love is “the book displaysrespect for children’s understandings, abilities and apprecia-tions.” How wonderful to have that reminder that the kids arethe intended audience.

At the Hinsdale Public Library we are making changes inour Youth Service Department to keep kids at the center of ourchildren’s book collections, too.

We are installing face-out bins for all of our picture books. If you’re old enough to remember record stores, these flip-through shelves will look familiar! We want the illustrationsthat are such a powerful part of these stories to be at eye levelfor little ones.

We’ve pulled some of our most popular picture booksand organized them by category. We have bins dedicated todinosaurs, royalty, things that go, listen/read-along, cartoons, concepts and best of the best (this is where you’ll find thoseCaldecott winners, along with many librarian favorites).

“The enjoyment of picture books is a precursor to not onlylearning to read but also wanting to read,” writes Mary RenckJalongo in “Young Children and Picture Books.”

Letting your child help decide what books go home with youcan help develop a lifelong love of reading.

In constant rotation with my 4-year-old right now are thecharming “Dog and Bear” books by Laura Vaccaro Seeger,“Duck Sock Hop” by Jane Kohuth, “The Day the Crayons Quit”by Drew Daywalt and anything by the divine Mo Willems.

When it’s cold outside andyou are cold, so are your pets.Like you and I, they need tobe inside where it’s warm andcannot survive out in the cold. They are our family, our lovedones and are just as much apart of our family as the humanmembers are. Response to students’election analysisIn response to a Sound Off

comment in a Jan. 7 editionabout Hadley Junior High Schooleighth-graders working onthe problem of voter turnout,it needs to be kept in mindthat those very same studentsare the future of leadership inthe community. Having prob-lem-based learning that tacklesa real problem of voter turnout isthe kind of learning that is goingto help prepare these studentsfor when they grow up. Studentsshould be prepared for actualreal-world problems and notjust stick to reading, writing andarithmetic. The kind of thinkingthat problems should just be“left to the adults” is somewhatold-fashioned, which can besupported by the fact that theadults of today’s America havethe most unproductive Congress,in addition to increasing prob-lems with poverty. We all mustremember the students of todayare the adults of tomorrow.

Elmhurst needs to watchout for small businessesI read about the Mindy store

closing in the paper last week, and nowwe have another empty

building in downtown Elmhurst. Will it take years for another busi-ness to rent, like the TCBY build-ing on York [Road]? That buildingwas empty for many, manyyears. I know the owner wantedto stay there, but Elmhurst raisedthe rent and they had to leave. Now, we have yet another dentaloffice. This town is not watchingout for our small businesses.

Good luck to Lemontvillage trustee candidatesI am pleased to find that two

new candidates are running forLemont village trustee. I wishthem success. Lemont, get outand vote. We need fresh newcommunity leaders.

‘Stop this madness:’ Snowplowed into drivewaysI am very fortunate to be able

to live in Riverside with its lovelywindy streets and small townfeel, even though our taxes arehigh here. That being said, it isalso wonderful that we havesnowplows that are mostlydiligent in keeping our streetsclear of excess snow. [But] whyis it that when the streets areplowed, the piled up snow getsshoved at the end of our drive-ways? It is so frustrating to goout and shovel the snow on thedriveway, only to come out onceagain and find the snow piled upwith heavy, slushy sleety snowthat I just worked so hard to clearup. Isn’t there something thatcan be done to both clear thestreet and prevent the snow frombeing pushed into our driveways?I challenge the village to come upwith a win-win solution for all. Itmay not be easy, but there has tobe something that can be done tostop this madness.

Water damage shuts downDuPage Children’s MuseumBy DAN FARNHAM

[email protected]

NAPERVILLE – The DuP-age Children’s Museum inNaperville is closed while itcleans up and repairs damagecaused by a flood last week.

Museum spokeswomanDee Dee McDevitt said a largewater main on the exterior of

the building burst sometimebetween the evening of Jan.8 and the morning of Jan. 9,causing water damage on allthree levels.

“[On the morning of Jan. 9],the staff that comes in to turnon the water tables walkedinto a stream everywhere,”she said.

The museum is expected

to be closed for at least a cou-ple of weeks, and all museumprograms have been canceledthrough Feb. 8.

McDevitt said the muse-um is not sure if the weathercaused the water main break, and professionals were imme-diately brought to the museumto assess the damage.

While the cost of the repairs

is not yet known, she said the fi-nancial implications will be sig-nificant and the museum willbe reaching out for donations.

The museum receives about60 percent of its funding fromdonations and 40 percent fromadmission and program fees.

“The timing [of the clos-ing] couldn’t be worse becauseduring January, February and

March, the museum experi-ences a high level of traffic,”McDevitt said.

However, she said the mu-seum also is taking this oppor-tunity with the repairs andconstruction needed to see ifthere are any improvementsthat can be made.

“The goal is to reopen bet-ter than ever before,” she said.

Fiber artist carries on centuries-old traditionBy MATTHEW [email protected]

Whether it be through thecreation of her chainmailjewelry, woven tapestries orbeadwork “painting,” the artof Western Springs residentBeverly Atseff takes time andpatience. The intricate workscome together slowly, fromsingle threads, beads or ringsof silver. They come togetherto form something complexand beautiful.

Weaving, the process oftaking single threads and pull-ing them tightly together withthe help of a loom, is a centu-ries-old process of creatingfabric. Although the processcan be slow and often solitary, that also is what has continuedto draw Atseff to create herwork.

“You have to eat the el-ephant one bite at a time,”Atseff joked of the long pro-cess. “I’m not a TV watcher,so I can weave at night. I likehaving something to do withmy hands.”

Her works can take 40 to 50hours to complete, with herlongest creation to date takingtwo years in all.

Atseff attended college asan art major at Syracuse Uni-versity in New York and grad-uated with a degree in design. She first took a class on weav-ing in her senior year at theuniversity. Although, she ini-tially thought the class wouldbe boring and put it off, aftercompleting a few projects, shefound herself drawn to the re-petitive process.

Atseff bought her first loomin 1979, and she now ownsmore than 10, plus a few spin-

ning wheels, which are used totake wool or cotton fibers andspin them tightly together intothread.

After buying her first loom, she continued to take moreclasses and develop her skills. She joined crafting guilds andmet other members and thenbegan to teach others in turnto keep the tradition alive.

In 1993, she met her futurebusiness partner and fellowweaver, Beverly Savel, atGraue Mill in Hinsdale wherethey both volunteered. It wasthere that their weaving tookoff together through lectures

and demonstrations of pioneertechniques.

“I think there’s a challengeto it,” Atseff said of what drewher to weaving. “The fun is inthe design of it.”

In the early 2000s, Atseffand Savel started 2-B Weaversas a weaving business in Hin-sdale before moving to West-ern Springs. The two decidedto ditch the storefront in 2007in favor of running the opera-tion from their homes throughtheir website, www.2-bweav-ers.com.

Moving online has allowedthem to connect with a broad

fan base, as well as cut downon overhead. Online, 2-BWeavers now sells instruc-tional books on weaving andused equipment, as well asproviding information aboutworkshops and lectures and,of course, Atseff and Savel’shandmade goods.

Atseff now works with awide array of materials to cre-ate her work, including bam-boo fibers, which produce asoft and silky fabric she turnsinto scarves. For herself, shealso creates “paintings” out ofsmall beads, which are sewntogether. About four years

ago, she began creating chain-mail jewelry. The jewelry iscreated in a similar processto weaving in that a pattern isdeveloped and repeated againand again. The time-consum-ing process takes single chainlines and turns them intobeautiful – almost ropes – ofmetal that become braceletsand necklaces.

A love of teaching has al-lowed Atseff to share the tal-ents she’s developed and keepthe tradition going. Her latestlecture was Tuesday at an Il-linois Prairie Weavers Guildmeeting at Congregation EtzChaim, 1710 S. Highland Ave.,Lombard.

Atseff and Savel also hostworkshops on a regular basisby appointment.

“It’s the teaching I love,”Atseff said. “[Businesses] nowsell looms for kids, and the ex-plosion of knitting has gotten alot of people interested.”

While there are easy to fol-low pattern guides available,Atseff said she prefers to findinspiration in architectureand nature. She had taken in-spiration from the bird’s-eyeview of skyscrapers in Chi-cago, for example, to createpatterns. Another piece takesinspiration from a close-uppicture of a butterfly wing.

“Architecture works wellbecause it’s geometric, but theresult becomes abstract. Youwouldn’t look at [the work]and see a building necessar-ily.

“I consider myself an art-ist,” Atseff said. “Weavingis often considered a craft. Ithink it’s an art. You have tocreate it. The beauty comes inthe way you interpret it.”

Beverly Atseff sits at her loom in the kitchen of her Western Springs house. The woven works of art shecreates can take 40 to 50 hours to complete. She often works on multiple projects at a time.

The question would only beadvisory, as the state would berequired to pass a law similarto those that prevent policeand fire fighters from beingallowed to strike. Based on

the result of the referendum, the board would or would notlobby for teachers strikes to betreated the same way.

The board also approvedan advisory referendum ques-tion that will ask voters if par-ents and students should giveinput on teacher evaluationsand whether teacher class-

room attendance should factorinto those evaluations. Thevote passed 4 to 2, with Rich-ard Skoda, Edward Corcoran,Claudia Manley and VictorCasini voting to approve thereferendum question. MichaelKuhn and Jennifer Plansonvoted no and Kay Gallo votedpresent.

Superintendent Bruce Lawand Assistant SuperintendentPam Bylsma said the admin-istration already was workingon how teachers are evaluated.

If approved, the resultswould advise how the admin-istration would consider theinput of students and par-ents in teacher evaluations,

Skoda said. The referendumwould provide the board foodfor thought when the admin-istration’s recommendationswould be brought to the board.

There were four other ref-erendums put to board mem-bers during the meeting whichwere not voted on because oflack of board interest.

WARRENVILLE – TwoBrothers Tap House in Warren-ville isn’t as showy a diningvenue as its landmark Round-house digs in Aurora, but givespatrons a ringside seat at theactual brewery. The tasty farecomplements not only TwoBrothers’ extensive creationsand sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additionalbottled artisan brews from theU.S. and around the world.

Savvy fans of the craft beerenterprise, which has beengrowing by hops and boundssince brothers Jim and JasonEbel took the leap in 1996,know they can time a week-end meal with a free tour ofthe brewery. They’re offeredat 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, withno reservations needed.

But added circus aside, theTap House is an attraction inits own right. Tables, boothsand high-tops dot the indus-trial space, whose walls sportgiant, framed versions of a va-riety of Two Brothers’ artisticbeer labels.

The restaurant notes thatall the meats are organic, anddishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that thekitchen serves late, which mycompanion and I took advan-tage of after a busy Saturday.

Scanning the menu, I readthe Brewer’s Reuben beefbrisket is brined in-house forseven days and was sad tohear it had sold out earlierin the evening. But then Inoticed the pulled pork, whichis prepared with dry rubbedpork butt smoked over applewood for five hours.

The meat was tender andperfectly spiced in a Lexing-ton-style vinegar sauce. It wassuch a generous portion that Iwould have liked a bit more ofthe coleslaw that topped it in azesty interplay of texture andflavor. In a nice touch for thewheat intolerant, gluten-freerolls can be substituted at noextra charge.

To accompany my sand-wich, I almost picked thesweet potato fries, but amglad I opted for the roasted

seasonal vegetables on the rec-ommendation of our attentiveserver. Offering terrific car-amelized flavor were squash, bell pepper, celery, cauliflow-er and carrot.

My companion pickedone of the night’s specials, achicken pot pie. He was in fora surprise. An au gratin serv-ing dish arrived capped by apuff pastry that lifted rightoff. Made to be handheld, theflaky confection was as richand buttery as a wonderful

French croissant.He enjoyed the smoked

chicken mixed with a vari-ety of vegetables, includingcelery, onion, carrots and peasmelded with a touch of savorycream sauce.

He paired it with TwoBrothers’ Northwind Imperial

Stout, which was served inan attractive snifter. The fullbar off the dining room alsooffers wines, as well as nicelyportioned samples of TwoBrothers brews for purchase. It has two televisions for thosewith eyes for more than themother lode of beers. Another

attention grabber is the enter-taining menu of craft brewsfrom the wider world.

Rounding out our supper,we split a generous dinnersalad of mixed greens toppedwith shaved radish. For des-sert, we capped the satisfyingmeal with Two Brothers’house-made cinnamon rootbeer in an ice cream float, aspicy twist on a black cow.The brewery’s other craft sodais French lemonade.

The menu extends toburgers, fish tacos, salads,N’Awlin’s Muffuletta, vegetar-ian options and desserts suchas Italian lemon cream cakeand chocolate decadence torte.

Located near its watersource of choice, the breweryis hidden away in an industri-al park off Butterfield Road. It’s well worth the search.

Rafferty, Red Devils overpower LionsBy JASON ROSSI

jrossishawmedia.com

HINSDALE – Matt Raffertymade his presence felt whenHinsdale Central’s boys bas-ketball team needed it most.

Rafferty figured into a pairof key second-half baskets, plus a few big buckets in thefirst half, to help lift the RedDevils to a 66-57 win against ri-val Lyons Township on Jan. 9.

The victory helped breaka tie atop the West SuburbanSilver standings as Centralimproved to 4-0 in the leaguewhile LT slipped to 3-1.

“I think it’s bigger becausewe were tied for first placein the conference, and thatwin was huge,” Rafferty said.“I think it’s a big confidenceboost and momentum for thenext couple games.”

Though a key victory, itwas just one in a season duringwhich the Red Devils hope toadd more to the total.

“Both teams were 3-0 so itwas an important game, butthere’s a long way to go,” Cen-tral head coach Nick Latorresaid.

In a game that was closethroughout, Rafferty helpedCentral grab a 44-43 lead head-ing to the fourth quarter withan assist on Thomas Ives’3-pointer late in the third. When the Lions tied the gameat 46-46 early in the fourth, Raf-ferty drained a trey momentslater to put the Red Devilsahead for good.

Rafferty scored nine pointsin the fourth quarter to helpCentral hold off LT, and hetallied 12 points in the secondquarter as the Red Devils over-came a 13-7 deficit for a 23-22halftime lead. He was 11-of-16from the field in the game, in-cluding 4-of-5 from long range.

“He had a great game, butthat was not out of the ordi-nary for him,” Latorre saidof Rafferty. “He’s been doingit for us for four years; hejust did it in different waystonight. Early on they werecollapsing on him in the postso we thought we could getGeorge [Kiernan] down there,

and Matt just got it going fromthe 3-point line. Really, thatwas crucial to getting us going

and keeping us in it early.”A Rafferty layup put Cen-

tral ahead 56-51 with underthree minutes left, and the RedDevils closed things out at thefree throw line. Jordan Brad-shaw was successful on back-to-back one-and-one situationsand drained six consecutivefree throws in the final 1:18.Ives hit on both ends of a one-and-one with 35 seconds left.

“It was a five-point gameand then they made eightstraight free throws, and when

we got in that position wehad to start fouling,” LT headcoach Tom Sloan said. “Theydid a really good job makingfree throws down the stretch.”

A night after playing infront of a packed home gym ina rivalry game, the Red Dev-ils finished Saturday’s gameagainst Naperville Central onan 11-3 run to earn a 39-33 vic-tory.

Ives scored 10 pointsagainst Naperville Central, but Grant Hutcherson scored

eight of his game-high 11points down the stretch as theRed Devils improved to 13-2on the season.

Central hosts GlenbardWest in a WSS contest at 7:30p.m. today before facing Glen-bard North at Downers GroveNorth’s Winter Classic at 2:30p.m. Saturday.

“It’s just a nice opportunityto play close to home againstgood competition,” Latorresaid of the shootout. “It’s a re-ally nice event.”

24 Hornets power past Pirates in huge gameBy JASON ROSSI

[email protected]

DARIEN – Barret Bensonprovided an early exclamationpoint in what was a statementgame for Hinsdale South’sboys basketball team.

Early in the third quarter,Benson faked a handoff pass, drove strong to the hoop andthrew down a two-handeddunk, a highlight in a domi-nant 71-53 win against a pow-erhouse Proviso East team ina West Suburban Gold gameTuesday.

“It was a huge game and weplayed really well together,”Benson said. “We came outwith the goal to play as a team. They gave us an opportunityto get up on them right off thebat. My teammates made goodplays to get me open and theygot open for easy layups, sowe just took what was there. It was a really fun game to-night.”

For a team that has been upand down throughout the sea-son, Tuesday’s win was a signthat things are heading in theright direction for the Hornets(7-8 overall, 3-2 WSG). Theyled 21-13 at the end of the firstquarter, expanded it to 39-22 atthe half and never let ProvisoEast back in the game.

“This is something to build

on,” Benson said. “We werestruggling a little bit at the be-ginning [of the season], so thisis a good win to get back on ourfeet and start heading in theright direction again.”

The 6-foot-11 Benson an-

chored South’s 2-3 zone de-fense, which forced ProvisoEast into an 18-of-57 shootingperformance for the game, most long-range shots thatwe contested. Benson also im-pressed on the offensive end,

but he had help as six otherHornets entered the scoringcolumn.

“That was our biggest thingon defense: Force the longest, toughest shot you can andwe’ll go from there,” Hins-

dale South head coach BrettMoore said. “We didn’t give uptoo many easy ones, that’s forsure.”

The Hornets were comingoff a disappointing 71-49 lossagainst WSG foe Leyden onJan. 9, but they were focusedfrom the get go against the Pi-rates, even in the midst of fi-nals week off the court.

“Our guys did a great jobtoday of doing what we askedthem to do. Great team win,”Moore said. “It’s probably aneye-opener when people seethis score. We’re going to beup and down. We’re not goingto go on a run where we don’tlose another game, but we’regrowing. ... This is somethingwe can build on, for sure.”

Hinsdale Central girls get back on track after LT lossBy JASON ROSSI

[email protected]

HINSDALE – For a Hins-dale Central girls basketballteam consistently scoring inthe 60s and 70s, a Jan. 9 gameagainst Lyons Township wascertainly out of the ordinary.

After forging a 10-10 tieon Payton Katich’s baselinejumper late in the first quar-ter, the Red Devils struggled atboth ends of the floor in a 53-25 West Suburban Silver lossagainst the Lions.

“We had not had a nightlike that all year,” Centralhead coach Tom McKennasaid. “LT stopped our sets andplayed good defense and wegot out of our system.”

The Red Devils trailed 24-14 at the half as leading scor-er Gabrielle Rush was limit-

ed to just one point. Centralclosed the gap to 28-19 earlyin the third quarter, but man-aged just one basket – Rush’s

3-pointer with 3:20 to play – inthe final frame as LT pulledaway for a comfortable win.

“That game was an appa-

rition,” McKenna said. “Wewere averaging over 60 pointsper game, Gabrielle was scor-ing 28 to 30 points a game andfour girls scored in doublefigures for us at the WheatonNorth [tournament] champi-onship game. I think LT did agreat job.

“I told the kids it happenssometimes. Sometimes, youcan’t explain why that hap-pens.”

It didn’t take Centrallong to get back on track asit picked up a 72-57 victoryagainst WSS foe GlenbardWest on Saturday. The RedDevils led 42-19 at the half andcruised to the victory. Rushscored a game-high 33 pointsand Paige Bareck and RileyBurr added eight apiece asCentral improved to 5-2 inconference play.

Central suffered an 83-60loss on Sunday at the Chi-cagoland Showcase at Fremdagainst a Benet team comingoff its first loss of the seasonthe day before. Rush scored 30and Katich tallied 12.

“We came back the next dayagainst Glenbard West andgot on a roll,” McKenna said.“Then Benet shot lights-out onSunday.”

The Red Devils now havetime to rest before facing Bel-videre North on Saturday tostart play at DeKalb’s MartinLuther King tournament.

“This is the second year ofthe tournament and our firstyear there,” McKenna said.“We had played at [the Mc-Donald’s Shootout at] Willow-brook, but this guarantees usfour games and there are somegood teams there.”
