Ten percent of the 1.3 million population is aged 60 and above. By 2040, 20% of the senior citizens are estimated to be above 60.
At present, elderly care homes are growing at fast rate. There are 55 such homes. Many are run by private parties on commercial lines. Some 23 are run by charitable institutions with direct subsidy from government.
Unlike hospitals, where sick people are treated to return to active economic life, those who are retired have to depend on their pensions or their children. For many the pension is not adequate to take care of all their needs. Fortunately in our welfare state, there is a non- contributory universal pension to all those above 60. At present, it is a little above $100 per month, which is enough for them not to go hungry.
We are also lucky that we enjoy free health service and free transport for the students and the elderly. The elderly take advantage of free transport to access free medical care. With improved conditions of living and health care, Mauritians are living longer.
In 2000, 7 persons were working for one retiree. By 2040, there will be only 3 for each retiree. This will definitely impact the finances of the government and will not be sustainable.
At present, only about 2000 are qualified to live in homes subsidized by the government and run by charitable institutions. The vast majority of the 164,000 are still living on their own, with families or with their children. Unfortunately, the tendency is that in a nuclear family and working couples, it is becoming very difficult for children to take care of their old and sick parents.
Caring for the elderly and abandoned.

When we refer to the Indian system of giving a pleasant health to every
citizen of the world, we resort to the Ayurveda. What our Rishis searched
was the different means nature has stored in the form of mental
environment and our spiritual treasure, the four Vedas.
Our scriptures mention five elements, namely: earth, air, water, fire and
sky to sustainthe universe and adopt an equilibrium for a sustained
development of the person and the
environment. Over centuries this balance was secured. But for this
century society is evolvingat such a speed that wise people are pondering
how to tackle? The Ayurveda is the perfect tool to keep worries, anxiety,
frustration, helplessness and other constant health related problems
faraway from the individual. Several types of therapies have been put into
practice the AyurvedaDoctors are highly qualified and the certificates
obtained are obtained are from recognized institutions by the Government
of India. These Doctors are eligible to prescribe the medicines, counsel,
guide, and help people in need. At the Human Service Trust, we are proud
to be pioneers as far as sensitization is concerned. In the last 27 years we
have thousands of needy people coming from every rung of the society
and getting treated. One component of Ayurveda is treating patients
through massage therapy. This method is applied on people suffering from
body ache and stress. I travel widely all around. I notice mushrooming of
hundreds of centres dispensing massage therapy. Ignorant people in quest
of happiness throng to these places. Indecent behavior immoral acts of
centres is bringing very bad name to the massage therapy. The HST would
like to inform such persons, please don’t play with health of people, don’t
bring bad name to Ayurveda. Persons who want to be treated by the
Ayurveda system visit us.

RECEPTION OF PBD DELEGATES ON 29.10.12
Is it not an irony that parents, with modest means, have been to raise 4-5 children, educate them, marry them, but their 4-5 children collectively are not able to take care of their own parents? Not that they do not love their parents, but times and culture are changing and it is not under their control.
For the last 30 years, we, at Human Service Trust, are taking care of some 150 old/ abandoned persons- men and women. Recently some 30 children in distress are under our care. The subsidy given by government is inadequate to meet all the costs. We have managed till now with the help and support of members, well wishers, and supporters coming from all sections of the Mauritians community.
Without their support, we could not have done it. We will continue to rely on your support to continue taking care of the old and abandoned.
