Private sector lender RBL BankLtd on Tuesday reported a 47%decline in its June quarter net

profit to ₹141 crore on the back ofhigher provisions and lower otherincome.

Its profits were lower than the ₹174crore estimated by a Bloomberg pollof 10 analysts.

The bank’s total provisions morethan doubled on a year-on-year(y-o-y) basis to ₹500 crore in Q1 FY21.It set aside ₹240 crore in covid-19provisions, taking its total cumula-tive provisions to ₹350 crore in thesix months to June. RBL Bank’s otherincome was down 31% y-o-y to ₹334crore.

“As we moved from a strict lock-down to various stages of unlocking,we saw a gradual improvement ineconomic activity. The bounce-backin the rural economy was quitestrong,” said Vishwavir Ahuja, man-aging director and chief executive,RBL Bank.

Like other lenders, RBL Bank’sloans under moratorium hasdeclined as well. It said that 13.7% of

its loan book was under moratoriumas on 30 June, compared to 33% ear-lier. The fall in moratorium has beenled by wholesale loans where 5%loans are under moratorium com-pared to 22% earlier.

“In the wholesale book, we haveseen a sharper reduction because ofmultiple reasons, including the factthat many customers who initiallythought they needed it decidedagainst availing or continuing with itas well as customers who were givenconditional approval at that time, deciding against it,” said Ahuja.

The bank’s net interest margin(NIM), a key measure of profitability, stood at 4.85% in the March quarter, down 8 basis points (bps) sequen-tially. Its net interest income (NII) orthe difference between interestearned and expended grew 27% y-o-yto ₹1,041 crore in Q1 FY21.

“As a bank, we continue to remainfocused on the balance sheet, capitalconservation and maintaining sur-plus liquidity. As an important pru-dential measure, we have signifi-cantly increased our provision cover-age ratio (PCR) by more than 600basis points to 70.5% and also takensignificant additional covid-19 provi-sions,” said Ahuja.

As a percentage of total loans, gross non-performing assets (NPAs)stood at 3.45%, compared to 3.62% inthe previous quarter. Its net NPAswere at 1.65% in the June quarter, compared to 2.05% in the previousquarter.

The bank’s deposits rose 2% y-o-yto ₹61,736 crore in Q1 FY21. Its cur-rent and savings account (Casa)deposits grew 18% y-o-y and 8%sequentially to ₹18,566 crore in theJune quarter. The share of retail termdeposits and Casa in the total depos-its was 60% as of 30 June.

India’s tally of covid-19 cases breachedthe 1.5 million mark on Tuesday, withMaharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhiremaining the worst-hit states despitesome decline in fresh cases.

Maharashtra leads with 383,723 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (227,688) andDelhi (132,275). The three states have alsoconducted some of the highest numbersof covid-19 testing in the country.

As per government data, the highestnumber of tests have been conducted byTamil Nadu (2.38 million), followed byMaharashtra (1.9 mn), Uttar Pradesh (1.5mn), Rajasthan (1.28 mn), Karnataka (1.26mn) and Delhi (992,193). Officials said permillion testing is one of the highest inDelhi. Nationally, the cumulative testingas on date has crossed 17.3 million. Testsper million has improved to 12,562.

Fresh cases came down in Maharashtraafter the launch of a “chase the virus” cam-paign in June for testing, tracing and isola-tion, officials said. The overall growth rateof cases in Mumbai from 20 to 26 July was1.03%. “The good news: Only 700 casestoday in Mumbai & that too with highesttesting till date in Mumbai ina single day (8,776),” stateminister Aditya Thackeraytweeted on Tuesday. Mumbaihas a total of 110,182 cases, ofwhich 21,812 are active.

On 23 June, Delhi saw its highestsingle-day tally of more than 4,000 cases, putting the health infrastructure underpressure. Since then, the Delhi govern-ment, along with the Union government, has ramped up efforts to increase testingfrom 5,000 per day to approximately20,000 a day along with increasing thenumber of containment zones.

“Delhi and Mumbai have been able tocontain the spread because of testing, treatment, tracking, isolation and team-work. Our sero-surveillance data fromDelhi needs to be examined in depth andsuch surveys may be undertaken in otherparts of the country,” said Dr SuneelaGarg, director of community medicine at

Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi Uni-versity.

“Along with the increase in testing, weneed to strengthen our containment strat-egies focusing on social distancing, masksand sanitization,” she said.

“As the pandemic is becoming mature,we cannot become lax with our contain-ment strategies in terms of hand hygiene, respiratory etiquettes and be aware of theearly warning symptoms,” she said.

The Enforcement Direct-orate (ED) on Tuesdayconducted searches at

the homes of the promotersand offices of GVK group inMumbai and Hyderabad inconnection with a money-laundering probe launched inthe first week of July.

“A total of nine locationshave been raided across Mum-bai and Hyderabad in connec-tion with ₹705 crore Mumbaiairport scam,” said an ED offi-cial. A spokesperson for GVKdeclined to comment.

The money-launderingprobe is based on a CentralBureau of Investigation caseregistered last month.

The case is against VenkataKrishna ReddyGunupati, chair-man of the GVKGroup, his sonG . V . S a n j a yReddy, managingdirector of Mum-bai InternationalA i r p o r t L t d(MIAL), and nineother privatecompanies, for alleged finan-cial irregularities to the tune of₹705 crore from the funds ofMIAL.

MIAL is a joint venturebetween the GVK Group,state-owned Airports Author-ity of India (AAI), and foreignpartners Bidvest and ACSA,

which operatesthe country’s sec-ond-busiest air-port in Mumbai.

The ED casealleges that someof these fundswere diverted, siphoned off andconcealed. Theseare the first set of

searches by ED. CBI had con-ducted searches in June. Asper the CBI filings, GVK groupmisused funds meant for the

development of 200 acres ofland in Mumbai by showingexecution of bogus work con-tracts to nine companies in2017-18, leading to a loss of₹310 crore to the exchequer.

Additionally, the promotersof GVK Group also misusedreserve funds of MIAL to thetune of ₹395 crore to financetheir group companies, theCBI alleged in the first infor-mation report. “The companyinflated expenditure figures ofMIAL by showing payments toemployees at their headquar-ters and group companies whowere not involved in the run-ning of MIAL causing a reve-nue loss to AAI,” CBI had said.
