BEFORE THE MEETING 1. arrange for a SPEECH TO BE EVALUATED; 2. procure the Certificates: a) ‘Eligibility and Originality’ Certificates, b) 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place Certificates; 3. retrieve any Trophies from last year’s winners; 4. prepare a Table Topics style ACTIVITY to fill the gaps (e.g. when votes counted). BEFORE EACH CONTEST 1. draw for speaking positions; 2. fill in the relevant Contest List on page 3 below; 3. answer any questions about the rules; 4. ensure the Timekeepers have timing sheets and understand their role; 5. check that you know the correct pronunciation of any difficult names or titles; 6. ensure that the Chief Judge briefs the judges; 7. ask each Contestant to complete and sign an ‘Eligibility and Originality’ Certificate and give them to the Chief Judge. ‘INTERNATIONAL SPEECH’ CONTEST

1. Timing. Explain:

a) begins with the contestant’s first definite communication;

b) lights at 5, 6 and 7 minutes - and that the red light will remain on until speech conclusion;

c) a contestant will be disqualified if the speech is less than

4 minutes 30 seconds or more than 7 minutes 30 seconds.

2. Positions. List the order of the Speakers.

Introduce each Speaker without comment in the sequence:

Speech no. ... Contestant ... Title ... Title ... Contestant.

Announce 1 minute’s silence after each speech.

After the 1 minute (or longer if required) silence following the final speech:1. ask Counters to collect voting slips & timesheets;2. ask Counters and Chief Judge to leave the room to count the votes.BREAK

Ensure the BEFORE EACH CONTEST duties (above) for the second contest happen during the break to avoid a delay after it.

‘EVALUATION’ CONTEST

1. Timing. Explain:

a) begins with the Contestant’s first definite communication;

b) lights at 2 minutes, 2 minutes 30 seconds and 3 minutes - and that the red light will remain on until speech conclusion;

c) a Contestant will be disqualified if the speech is less than 1 minute 30 seconds or more than 3 minutes 30 seconds.

2. Procedure. Explain:

Contestants can take notes. After the speech all Contestants leave the room and have 5 minutes with their notes. Then their notes are taken away and only returned to each Contestant when called upon to deliver their evaluation.

3. Positions. List the order of the Evaluators.

Introduce the SPEECH TO BE EVALUATED.

Afterwards, ask all contestants to leave the room for 5 minutes to study their notes.

Ask a Timekeeper to signal 3/4/5 minutes.

Introduce an ACTIVITY to fill the 5 minutes.

Call in and introduce each Evaluator without comment.

Announce 1 minute’s silence after each Evaluation.

After the 1 minute (or longer if required) silence following the final Evaluation:

1. ask the Counters to collect ballot slips & timesheets;

2. ask the Chief Judge and Counters to leave the room to count the votes;

Introduce the ACTIVITY again whilst the votes are counted.

CLOSING DUTIES

Give to each Contestant a ‘Certificate Of Participation’.

Announce winners in reverse order* and give them their Certificates and trophies.

Congratulate the Contestants who were not placed and thank all those who helped.
