not long ago,oneoftheleadersoftheCanadianJewishcommunity(amemberofanothersynagogue)remarkedthatHolyBlossomTempleistheiconicJewishaddressinthiscountry.Nobuilding,noinstitution,noaddress,hesuggested,rep-resentstheJewsofTorontoandCanadaasdoesthisuniqueplace,thathasnowsatonBathurstforsome70years.

Perhapsthisisonereasonmanyofusfeelsostronglyaboutthisplaceanditsfuture—specifically,whatweshoulddobywayofphysicalredevelopmenttoen-surethatthefutureisasrealasthepast.

Pa S S I O n a n D c a r eThispassionandcareforHolyBlossomTemple—thisplaceofsomanymemo-riesforsomanyforsolong—wasreflectedatourfirsttwoTownHallMeetings,heldtoviewanddiscusstheproposedplansforrenewaldevelopedbyarchitectJackDiamond.Theviewsex-pressedandthewaytheywereexpressedpromisesthatwewillnotonlygetthingsright,butgetthemrightforfuturegenerationstocome.

Manyviewshavebeenaired:thoseinpassionatesupportoftheprojectandinadmirationoftheDiamonddesign;thosewhosuggestwenotchangethe

orientationoftheSanctuary;thosewhofeelthat,giventheopportunitynow,wemustreorienttheSanctuarytoward

Jerusalem;andthoseconcernedwithhowwewillraisethemoney.Alloftheseconcernsandmorewereexpressedwithclarityandpassion.

Onematterofhistoryandhalachahinparticular:thisquestioninregardtothehalachahconcerningwhetherasynagogueshouldfaceJerusalem.TheansweristhatthisisnotamatterofJewishlaw,butisamatterofJewishcus-tom(minhag).ThatweareoneofthefewsynagoguesnottofaceJerusalemdoesnotmeanthatourprayersarelessvalidorthatthedecisiontofacetheoppositedirection70yearsagowasil-legitimate.Indeed,asIhaveoftensaid,thebuildingofHolyBlossomTempleinthelate30swasabrilliantexpressionoftheneedsoftheJewsofthattime—andhasnowservedourcongregationwellfordecades.

However,itdoesmean,asoneTemplemember(ElizabethWolfe)saidsoeloquently,“NowthatwehavetheopportunitytoreorienttheSanctuary

—evenputtingasidethatitmakessensearchitecturallytodoso—toturnourbackonJerusaleminthecurrentcontextwouldbetootellingandunforgivable.”

Thedecisiontakenin1938tofaceonewayreflectedtheviews,cultureandneedsofthatgeneration.Ibelievethedecisionwasalegitimateone.Likewise,thedecisionwemaketodaywillreflectourviews,theneedsofourpeopleandthewishesofourcongre-gation.Nodoubtitwillbeequallylegitimate.

c h a n g e I S n e v e r e a S yWhatitgetsdowntoforus—aswithotherinstitutions—isthis:thatthematterofchangeisnevereasyforanindividualoraninstitution.WewereremindedofGEChairmanJackWelch’sobservation,“Iftherateofchangeoutsideyourinstitutionisgreaterthantherateofchangeofwithin—youmaywellhavenofuture.”Iffearofchangeisonemattertoconsider,fearofnotchangingisanother.IndeedthisisanexcitingandimportanttimeforHolyBlossomTemple—andIamconfidentthatwewillgetmattersrightandensurethefutureofoursynagogue.

after many yearsofdiscussionandcountlesshoursofworkonthepartofmanyvolunteers,wearepresentingourcongregationwithaproposalforarenewedHolyBlossomTemple:Our future. Inspired by our past.

OnFeb.22,2007,weheldthefirstofthreescheduledTownHallMeetings.Almost400membersfilledthePhilipSmithCongregationalHallandheardfromTempleleadershipaboutthepro-posalforrenewal.AsecondmeetingwasheldonMar.5,2007withcomparableattendance.

ThehighlightofthesemeetingswasapresentationbyJackDiamondexplain-inghisdesignproposal.Heprovidedadetailedanalysisofoursiteconditionsandledusthroughhisthoughtprocessindevelopinghisproposeddesign.

TheproposedchangestotheSanctuarywereasubjectofmuchdiscussion.Some

AsChairofthiscampaign,Iwouldliketosharewithyouitsimportance.ThefundsraisedarecriticaltothecontinuingsuccessofHolyBlossomTempleasathrivingandinvitingcom-munity.Wecountonyourcontributionstomaketheprivilegesofmembershipavailabletoall,sincemembercontribu-tionsandotherincomedonotfullycoverourcosts.

Ournewfundingformulareplacestheold‘fairshare’system.Itisbasedontheprinciplethatthosewhocangivemorewillsupportthoseinthecommu-nitywhoarelessfortunate.

Afreedom means searching

as we approachtheholidayoffree-dom,Pesach,howmanyhourshavewespentplanning,shoppingandagonizingovertheplanning?Iamnotsurethiswastherealplanforourcelebrationofz’man cheruteinu,thetimeofourfreedom.Instead,wemustaskthequestion:howandwhyisfreedomimportant?

a c O n c e P t O f f r e e D O mWhentheChildrenofIsraelleftEgypt,theydidnothaveanyconceptoffree-dom.UptothispointinourJewishhistory,yearswerespentasslaves.Thatgenerationdidnotreallyrememberthelifeofpreviousgenerations.Thethoughtoffreedom,ofnothavingtodowhatthePharaohhadordered,wasinconceivable.Theirdailyroutine,eventhoughtheworkmayhavebeendifficult,waspredictable.Theyknewwhattoexpectandhowtoexpectit.Thatis,untilMoses,withhelpfrom

God,hadgranderideas.LeavingEgyptwasunexpected,unpredictableandscary.Ittookmanyyearsofsearching,

discoveringandtrustingtocreateafreecommunitycalledtheJewishPeople.ItwasnotuntiltheChildrenofIsraelre-ceivedandacceptedtheTenCommand-mentsandbeganobservingthemitzvotthattheyrealizedthesignificanceofthefreedomstheywereabouttohaveforever.

Freedomdoesnotmeantheabilitytodoasonepleases.Truefreedommeanstheabilitytodiscover,tochallengeandtolearn.Asacommunity,weneedtotaketheopportunitytofindourownfreedoms.ThisisourchancetodowhatourancestorsinEgyptdidnothavethechancetodo.Weareobligated—accordingtotheHaggadah “b’chol dor va’dor”…ineverygeneration—toretellthestoryofourslaveryinordertonever

retreattothatexistence.Itisourdutytohavethefreedomtocontinuealongthepathtolifelonglearning.

P O t e n t I a lTherearemanywaysofcontinuingonthispath.Byaffordingyourchildrenop-portunitiesinformalandinformalJewisheducation,youallowthemthefreedomtopursuetheirJewishpotential—toexplore,discoverandchallenge.Thesearethetypesofexperiencesthatcontinuetostimulateourminds.Iencourageyoutoattendasmanycoursesandprogramsaspossible,andIinviteyoutoofferyoursuggestionsastothekindsofcoursesyouwanttopursueinthenextyear.Ifyouaresoinclined,andwouldliketobecomeinvolvedinanyofourReligiousSchoolprograms,pleasecallmeattheschooloffice(ext.239),attheTemple.

Forthepast350years,NorthAmeri-canJewshaveblendedtraditionalsacredmusicwithnewmelodiesandmusicalmodestocreateoriginalAmer-ican-Jewishmusic.Theemploymentofparticularscales,motifs,modes,rhythmsandrecurringmelodicpatternshasbeenpasseddownfromgenerationtogeneration,andexisttodayinmuchthesameformasinthedaysofKingDavid.ManyofthemostmemorablesongsofthegoldenageofAmericanpopularmusictracetheirrootstothesesynagoguemelodiesandYiddishsongs.TheBroadwaymusical,aunique20th-centuryAmericanartform,wasthebirthplaceformanyofthesetunes.

Between1925and1951,throughthreedecadesofdepression,warandsocialupheaval,writersbroughtapowerfullyappealingvisionofAmericatothemusicalstage—avisionthatwasshapedbysonganddance.ThiswasthegoldenageofmusicinAmerica,whenasmallgroupofextremelytalentedsongwritersandlyriciststurnedouthundredsofpopularandbrilliantsongs.Morethanafewofthesesongswere
