The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of Arlington Cemetery’s most popular sites. The Memorial Amphitheater has been the scene of funerals of some prominent Americans as well as the site of the Memorial Day and Veterans Day celebrations.

The remains of unknown American soldiers from World Wars I and II and the Korean conflict are contained in the Tomb. It is perpetually guarded by members of the 3rd United States Infantry (The Old Guard). Since 1937, the Tomb has been guarded 365 days a year, every minute of the day and night. The guards never wear their rank on their uniforms, as they do not want to outrank the unknown soldiers, whatever their rank may have been.

The bodies of many soldiers killed in World War I could not be identified. To honor them, the remains of one were brought to the United States Capitol to lie in state. On Armistice Day, 1921, the remains were ceremoniously buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The Tomb bears the inscription: Here Rests in Honored Glory an American Soldier Known But to God.

G. Harvey’s current release, “Cowhands on the Avenue”, is a turn-of-the-century scene of Austin, Texas. The beautifulTexas capitol rises in the background. These cowhands ride their horses along Congress Avenue, while signs of a new era are evident with a trolley and a car also on the rainy thoroughfare.

“Cowhands on the Avenue” has all the trademarks that make G. Harvey’s work so popular.

Many who have been out observing bison during their summer rutting period may get a chance to witness, first-hand, the beauty and power of a bull bison fight. They can sometimes last for several minutes or being over in seconds - either way, they are very, very exciting to observe. Even the younger bulls like to join the peanut gallery, and they are often found bouncing around at the edge of the fight, almost joining in. Sometimes a bull, while focused on an opposing bull, will lose sight of his complete surroundings and may get surprised by a third bull who has taken advantage of that situation. While I haven’t seen a bull actually get up-ended as I’ve depicted here, I’ve seen it almost happen three times. I can imagine that, if all the stars align just right, it is by all means possible and has happened plenty of times before. - Kyle Sims
