mong the other teenage &ikings, #iccup first comes off as awkward, mainly

because he.s a poor fighter, and rather scrawny for a &iking" s he becomes more

adept at fighting dragons, however, they start paying more attention to him, some

even starting to try to talk to him" Despite this, #iccup remains shy and secretive,

preferring to be alone with $oothless, likely because he.s unused to all the positive

attention" #e also tends to be sarcastic with a dry sense of humor that can

sometimes put him at odds with the other &ikings in his tribe" 3t also seems that

#iccup likes to hide his fear with said sarcasm and dry humor" Due to his shyness,

he had a habit of stuttering and stammering when talking to some of the other

&ikings, especially strid or when his father was angry at him" Despite his many

virtues and his clear capabilities as a leader, #iccup is not without his flaws" #e is

rather prone to letting his insecurities cloud his udgment and effect his actions- in

the film, his desperation for the acceptance of his tribe, and his father in particular, cause him to regularly attempt to kill dragons along with the villagers, only to end

up doing more harm then good due to his clumsiness" 3n the television show, his

mistaken belief that %toick still does not accept him causes him to lead the other

&ikings on a potentially dangerous treasure hunt to prove himself" #is innate

friendliness and tendency to give others the benefit of the doubt cause him to be a

little too trusting of strangers, leaving him vulnerable to manipulation and deceit

by more dishonest characters, such as #eather and 5ildew, on more then one

occasion" 3n the episodeThawfest , #iccup shows a more unlikable,

hypercompetitive side to his personality as he begins to score victories over

%notlout" %ince #iccup is unaccustomed to winning anything, he handles it poorly,

letting the glory go to his head to the point where he briefly becomes almost if not

as arrogant and unpleasant as %notlout" #iccup is also prone to overconfidence in

his ability as a diplomat due to being mostly successful so far, which becomes a

maor catalyst of the second film.s story line- his total belief that he would be able

to reason with Drago causes him to run away from !erk to confront the warlord,

causing %toick and &alka, who both understood and witnessed firsthand the true

etent of Drago.s psychopathy and knew he could not be reasoned with, to chaseafter him" $his indirectly but ultimately leads to %toick.s death at the hands of

Drago when he hypnoties $oothless into attacking #iccup to demonstrate the

superiority of his philosophy over #iccup.s" 3n spite of all his flaws, #iccup is

never above admitting when he is or has been wrong, and will do his best to make

amends with others, showing he has a great deal of humility, and he learns from his

mistakes"

6ne etremely notable character trait #iccup possesses is a deep sense of

compassion" !ecause of this he spares $oothless, and in doing so he changes the

world of &ikings and dragons forever" #e was etremely uncomfortable with the

thought of having to kill a dragon in the arena later in the film" #iccup carries this

quality into the television series" #e shows great sympathy to %notlout at the end of

the $hawfest 7ames, giving up his own glory and fame for the sake of his friend

and cousin though %notlout showed no gratitude at all" #e will almost never allow

$oothless to use his full power against foes" 3nWhat +lies !eneath, he begs

$oothless to spare a Whispering Death that had nearly killed both of them ust

moments earlier" $he peak of #iccup.s sympathy is displayed in his

releasing 5ildew, the very man who had betrayed him, from an 6utcast cell" 8pon

seeing the 6utcasts take 5ildew.s one beloved possession, his sheep, #iccup

clearly displays pity for the old man" 8nfortunately #iccup is occasionally na9ve in

his sympathy, as 5ildew betrayed him yet again right afterwards" %till, his

kindheartedness has resulted in many a victory and accomplished the training ofthe deadliest dragons in the world" $he one character #iccup seems to be willing to

attack and even kill was lvin" 6riginally, #iccup was more interested in avoiding

him, but as lvin.s plots hit closer and closer to everything #iccup cares about,

#iccup seems to harden in a difficult resolution" #e has been seen ordering

$oothless to kill lvin when lvin was threatening to toss strid off of a cliff" 3n

the finale, #iccup and $oothless even charged lvin in an attempt to kill him after

he had captured, threatened, and deeply insulted both of them" lthough they failed

in this attempt, lvin was still one of the few people #iccup is willing to let

$oothless kill but gave up when lvin turn into the good side" 6verall, #iccup is

an intelligent, nice and likable person who is naturally bighearted and innocent" 3t.s

shown in the sequel that he and $oothless have become :adrenaline unkies:,

performing tricks like free;falling" #e has also gone from being a shy boy, to a

confident young man, and :the greatest Dragon 5aster this world has ever  seen:

<as strid describes him to Drago !ludvist = and he is shown to care for his loved

ones, especially %toick, &alka, $oothless and strid"
