Huawei WDM DCI Solution for Cloud Era

  • 01 02

Digital technology is shaping the future of the world. Cloud computing, networking, mobile technology, and big data continue to integrate deeply into our daily lives as data center (DC)-centric networks are gradually taking shape. To better share DC resources, improve operational safety, and reduce disaster recovery costs, the interconnection between DCs has become inevitable.

    01 Background

Traditionally, Internet services were mostly geared towards search engines and web browsing. In the Internet+ era, services are shifting toward the cloud. Sandvine, a broadband service company, recently published data showing that live entertainment, including streaming video and audio, account for 70.4% of all household traffic in North America.

Cloud services create large amounts traffic between DCs, including traffic from data synchronization, disaster recovery, virtual machine migration among public clouds and between public and private clouds, and so on.The majority of traffic flows occur between the DCs within a city. To provide customers with a better user experience, a city's DCs must first interconnect, establish resource pools, allow the mutual extraction of data between multiple DCs, and share resources.

In the next two to three years, 80% of enterprise services will be built on cloud computing platforms. To meet the needs of increasing services, DCI networks need a larger service bearing capability of a single-pair fiber, with 10T as the base requirement. However, fiber resources are very limited and must be maximized to bear the largest possible amount of DCI traffic.

    0302 DCI Challenges

    05

DCI devices are usually deployed within the same equipment room as data devices. To adapt to the DC equipment room environment, DCI devices use 19-inch cabinets, AC power supplies, a front air inlet and rear air outlet cooling method, and so on. Traditional WDM devices do not support the DC installation environment, requiring installation environment reconstruction.

Over the past 10 years, increased power consumption has doubled the operation costs per server. The power consumption for each rack is very limited in leased equipment rooms. For DCI devices, the lower the power consumption of each Gbit, the higher the utilization rate of each rack and the higher the operational efficiency.

Internet enterprises use IT architecture, and technical engineers have no experience main-taining optical transmission devices. Therefore, DCI devices must come with software and hardware maintenance procedures like IT devices, provide pluggable components that are plug-and-play, and provide open software interfaces that allow devices to be quickly integrate into existing network systems.

Conflict Between Traditional WDM Devices and the Installation Environment of DCs

For most DCI users, their devices are usually deployed at third-party equipment rooms, leased on a per-subrack basis. Therefore, the efficient use of rack space is a primary concern to all customers. A small and dense chassis design is an effective way to increase rack space utilization.

    Huawei OSN902 Product Introduction

OSN902 is a WDM transmission platform tailored for DCI and is well suited for handling massive bandwidth. It uses the open T-SDN software architec-ture for intelligent management, one-click deployment, and quick service provisioning.OSN902 integrates 100G/200G (QPSK/16QAM) programmable optical trans-mission technology capable of accessing 10GE/40GE/100GE to meet the different traffic transmission needs of DCs.The Huawei developed oDSP chip and algorithm increases transmission distance by 25%, reduces power consumption by 30% compared to the industry average, and reduces the OPEX.The front and rear of the chassis features removable units (fans, power supplies, system control boards) as part of a modular design supporting hot-swappability. Each module features a screw-less, plug-by-hand design that makes part replacement possible in just 15 seconds.
