The Huda Academy was established about a decade ago. With the blessings of Allah (SWT), we have come a long way. The initial school was 13 children with just two grades in a side-room at the masjid. Now, we have a free- standing 12000ft 2 building with 84 registered students. While this year we are up to grade 4 only, this is the highest student: grade ratio we have ever had! Additionally, Huda serves as Sunday Love Islam School for more than 80 children from the community. Al-hamdulillah! The school is off to a solid start this year. We have a waiting list for Pre-K program, the KG class & 1 st grade, a Huda first! We have been able to retain our grades with 15 children in the third grade. Message from the Chairman, HASB

I strongly believe that the most important component of a good school is the partnership between the school & parents, and indeed it is one of the exceptional strengths at the Huda Academy. The school’s mission embodies four powerful domains: character, courage, respect and responsibility. I envision a school where everyone pulls together and not apart. This simple, yet powerful organizational consonance promotes more time spent on learning. We must invest our time & energies in our most valuable resource - our children. Huma S. Baig.

PreK had an eventful

September & October,

2

starting out with the cowboy day in honor of our letter Cc. We put on costumes and competed in stick horse rides. On Daddy’s day we had lots of fun making the daddy’s day cards and the cute neck- tie key rings for our dads. For the letter Ff we had a family picture day to share with their friends and teachers. In honor of letter Gg we had the grandparents day where some grandparents joined us for lunch and shared their past stories. Our next big event is planned for the week of letter Hh when we are having Hajj practice and Eid-ul-Adha festivties.

This year KG started off with the Kindergarten Monsters theme. In the first nine weeks we reviewed the alphabet & letter sounds & practiced writing them with numbers. We also studied families & communities and have Islamic Studies and Arabic classes everyday.

2

We also practice writing every day, trying to write the sounds we hear and to draw a picture to go with the story. Our field trip to Motley’s pumpkin patch was a lot of fun! We got to watch animal races and go on a hayride. The best part was picking out a pumpkin to take home. Later KG cut open a big pumpkin and counted 407 seeds inside.

KG also studied a plant unit and each student planted four corn seeds and gave them water & plenty of sunlight. Within a few days our corn seeds started to grow.

1st Grade

In Math, the 1st graders play The Number Line Squeeze game and have also started learning about money. We plan to set up a “mini” store, where students will practice counting money through shopping in the classroom store. The students have also started telling time on the hour and ½ hour. We read poems and nursery rhymes and enjoy listening audio books. We have started small reading groups to strengthen our speech fluency. Almost daily, we write in our personal journals, focusing on capitalization, punctuation and sentence structure.

In English, we read several stories from a variety of genres, such as realistic fiction, folk tale, play, and narrative nonfiction. We have been doing journal writing almost every day. In Math, we reviewed and learned about telling time, grouping by tens, equivalent names for numbers & counting patterns. Also, we did addition, number stories, doubles facts, fact families, frames-and-arrows routines & strategies for subtraction. In Science, we have been

learning about plants, how they are grouped and adapted to live in different environments. We also learned about vertebrate & invertebrate animals as well as food chains & food webs. In Social Studies, we have delved into types of neighborhoods, communities how they change over time as well as why it is important to have and to follow rules & laws.

In addition, we practiced reading maps and locating landforms on a map with an introduction about earth’s resources and caring for it.

Since school has begun, in Reading the 3rd grade has concentrated on separating realism from fantasy, determining the sequence of events, main idea and details, identifying the literacy elements of setting and character, and using context clues to identify meaning. Math has included instruction on fact families, time, money, how to complete a Frames-and Arrows diagram and Name-Collection boxes, and how to solve comparison number stories using the Parts-and-Total diagram.

In science, the 1st graders have been learning about living and nonliving things and in the next few weeks, have several science experiments to look forward to. In Social Studies, we continue discussing different kinds of communities, laws & leaders and students will create their very own news story about their community and present it to the class.

The class had a fantastic time at the zoo. We were allowed to touch a snake, python, rabbit, rat & ferret. We learned that tarantulas can’t be in the sun, apes don’t have tails, but monkeys do, some snakes are harmless, and Penguins live in Antarctica & South America.

Social Studies began with a study of maps & types of communities. In Science we are currently on Chapter 3, “Where Plants and Animals Live”. Writing has consisted of learning the Writing

Alhamdullilah, nine weeks have gone by and our students have been working hard and learning so much about their Di’n. It is extremely important that our young ones learn Quran & Salah since these are the foundations of our beautiful faith. It has been our mission to build a strong foundation regarding these and the students have really understood the message of taking the time to perfect their prayer and recitation. They have also come to understand the details of congregational and individual prayer as well as the details of performing ablution in the correct manner. Our 2nd graders and up have finished two long surahs and are currently working on memorizing the third one with correct recitation. I am proud and very excited to announce the three star students for this quarter: Layla Hamwi (4th grade), Hannah Wali (3rd grade) and Mustafa Khan (2nd grade).

Process & Traits of Good Writing and the students have started using clusters before writing their paragraphs. English has consisted of identifying sentences, locating the subject and predicate in a sentence, correct punctuation and singular & plural nouns. We have also started a vocabulary word wall across from our classroom.

arabic & islamic studies

This Quarter the 4th graders had a lot of fun & learning. They enjoyed the trip to the zoo, which was linked to their Science curriculum. They learned about the different ecosystems and animal habitats. The students showed great enthusiasm about the Social Studies project on different states, wherein

they learned about the different regions in the United States and the resources in each state. In Math, we successfully completed our planned three Units. We learned about naming and constructing geometric figures, using numbers and organizing data, multiplication and division facts, number sentences and algebra. We plan to have a Math Quiz Competition in the next quarter inshallah. In English Reading and Language Arts, we were introduced to a detailed Book Report. They thoroughly enjoyed the Personification and came up with wonderful ideas!!!
