Primary children from the Pool Learning Cluster have enjoyed a real ‘Time Team’ experience as part of the ‘Big Dig’ at Pool Academy. An area of ground has been made available for archaeological digging and research and primary students have enjoyed the opportunity to take part in a supervised ‘dig’ using archaeological tools.

Mr M Turner (Head of History) explained: “The ‘Big Dig’ is a patch of ground that has been ‘peppered’ with several artefacts including coins, animal bones, bits of old jewellery, etc. Students can dig through sandy earth to discover the items and record their findings. Various archaeological techniques are being used. The children are absolutely thrilled with the experience of a hands on approach to History.

Mrs A Parker-Jones, History teacher added, “We are trying to simulate the archaeology experience here at the school by allowing children to take a more practical approach to History. They love to get their hands dirty and have had such fun exploring archaeology as it should be.”

Genna, a Year 6 student commented: “This is brilliant. I definitely want to be an archaeologist when I get older. We found an animal skull and had to carefully dig it up and identify what it was. Thanks to the History Department at Pool Academy and especially the Pool History Leader students for helping us and letting us take part in their ‘Big Dig’.”

Arts Award Students visit Portreath Primary School

Alicia, Bethany and Chloe went to Portreath Primary School last Thursday with Miss Smith to teach a music and arts workshop to a small group of children as part of their Arts Award.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop, and the girls are going to be very good teachers! Well Done!

Another dog found and returned to its owner

Amy Bennett 11SC, Ellie Bennett 10LR, Ellie Cope 10LR and Caitlin Vaughan 10JB found a lost dog on their way to school on Tuesday morning. The dog was in the road and the students were concerned about its safety so they caught the dog and then spent some time tracking down its owner.

The dog was returned to its owner after a short time.

Well done girls!
