The Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland Festival is the modern marketing name for the Mrs Sunderland Competition, first held in 1889 to honour and celebrate the career of the famous Victorian soprano Susannah Sunderland (nee Sykes). Since then the ongoing success of the competition has been reliant on gifts and donations, and more recently legacies, to

further its work for the community. We are a charity, run entirely by unpaid volunteers, focussing on education within the arts for the benefit of the whole community, and children in particular as we recognise the importance of engaging them with musical and dramatic performance. Recent innovations include Children’s Workshops attended by around 900 children from local schools, and Workshops for Special Needs Schools. The reaction of children to music and dance is truly heart-warming. New in 2019 was “Music for the Brain Tea Dance” which has now been further developed in conjunction

with The Alzheimer’s Society. Our work is valued as was evidenced by an Examiner Pride of Huddersfield Award in 2016.

All gifts in wills are welcomed. Your gift will make a difference to our Festival and help to secure its status as the premier Festival in the North of England. We encourage you to leave a gift in your will for the general purposes of the Festival rather than a restricted purpose. We will discuss possible uses of your gift with your executors when the time comes bearing in mind such priorities as may be presented at that time.

You can be confident your gift will make a real difference to the Festival’s future. We acknowledge gifts in whatever way the donor and/or his/her executors feel to be most appropriate. Equally, we can make sure that gifts remain anonymous if that is preferred.

Be assured that your gift will make a difference to our Festival and help to secure its status as the premier Festival in the North of England.

Welcome to the 2022 Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland Festival Syllabus

We were devastated to have to cancel the main festival in 2021. We had planned everything to be Covid secure but in the end the pandemic won and Kirklees decided that it was just not safe enough to use the town hall. As it turned out we were back in the most severe lockdown in February anyway. Onwards and upwards and we are now looking forward to 2022 by which time we hope everything will be back to normal (fingers crossed). We are aware of how hard it has been for performance to continue during this difficult time and we have therefore decided to keep the changes to administration and entry requirements which we planned for the 2021 festival as a direct result of the feedback we had from our partners. The major changes which we have made to the syllabus (you will find the details in the class section).

1. Entry fees will be able to be paid by bank transfer. Details can be found on the individual sections for paper entries and on the website for electronic entries. We hope that this will lead to more entries being made electronically.

2. A key concern over many years has been that performers do not know, prior to the festival, the details of the classes, venue, times, performers and order of performance. This is because we have always relied on the printed programme sales to inform performers and audience at the festival. We have therefore decided to ensure that all performers will have access to a programme as soon as it is available. This will be a downloaded copy of the full programme in PDF format which will be sent to all those people who have made entries. Teachers and musical directors will then be able to pass on this electronic copy to all performers. The knock on effect of this is that we will not be printing and selling as many hard copy programmes as normal with the inevitable reduced income that this will cause. We therefore decided to increase the cost of all entries by £1 to cover the programme costs for 2021 and all fees will remain the same for the 2022 festival. The printed programme has been £4 for the last few years so £1 is a bargain (!) and we hope you will enjoy looking through the programme before the festival.

3. We have added a new junior choir class in which a school choir is asked to choose

a piece to perform which they have prepared for the key stage two workshop. We hope that this will encourage more school choirs to take part in the festival.

4. A new Trophy is to be awarded in the adult choir section to acknowledge a ‘local’ choir.

5. In these difficult times we know that preparation time has been curtailed for many performers and we have therefore relaxed many of the rules about when you need to identify own choice pieces and when we will require accompanist music. We have also increased the number of classes where there are set pieces to reduce the need for increased communication.

Reach for the Stars 2022

At the last festival, seven schools from across Kirklees and Calderdale joined together in various dance, drama and musical activities and we hope they will all be back this year. The day will start with a workshop led by Dark Horse Theatre Group, followed by the opportunity for students to showcase their skills in prepared performances. An audience is welcomed at no charge.

“Music for the Brain” Tea Dance 2.30 – 4.00 pm

A concert with music from Musica Kirklees in the atmospheric Concert Hall. Invited guests from various Music for the Brain groups and their supporters can enjoy the music, sing, and if they wish, dance to the music of their youth played by today’s youth. Audience and performers will have the opportunity to meet and chat over tea and cake. All participants will benefit from this exciting concert.

‘SING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE’Singing for KS2 ChildrenThursday 17 February 2022

Supported by ONE17 Charitable Trust

Workshop Leader: Sharon Durant

We are delighted to be working with Sharon Durant on the very topical subject of Climate Change and to provide children the opportunity to express their feelings about this through performing arts. In addition to songs that we will be singing, children will be invited to create their own songs, rap or poem on the topic of Climate Change.

Sharon is an internationally known vocalist, teacher, and composer. She worked at Stage Gateshead for 15 years, training and supporting teachers who participated in school singing and lead many large-scale events before going free-lance. Sharon and Rob Kitchen devel-oped the “Finding Your Voice” programme for the Music Futures project and delivered training across the UK. She has also worked for the British council delivering their world voice programme in Columbia, Sierra Leone, Brazil, and Morocco. Sharon also performs as part of the Musical ensemble “Mouthful” who successfully devise and compose new vocal material. We look forward to working with her.

Charmaine Beaumont is our organiser and contact for registration forms and the details for training will be given with the confirmation of registration.

Teacher training is planned for the autumn.

Young Musician of the Year 2022 Sunday 20 February The Young Musician of the Year 2022 is intended for young musicians of a high standard (at least grade 8 or equivalent), including those aiming towards or just beginning a professional career in music. The £1000 prize should be used for their musical development. This is usually open to 18 to 24 year olds across the United Kingdom and entry will be limited to the first twenty eligible entrants. As we had to disappoint our entrants in 2021 we have increased the age range for 2022 only to 18 to 25 so that those who would have joined us in 2021 are still able to do so. Please see Class 100 for details

Credit will be given for a balanced and varied selection of pieces. David Beer David Beer trained as a choral and orchestral conductor and, while studying for a BA in Music in Hull, was a member of the University Choir, performing many of the great choral works. This instilled in him a love of choral music and while teaching music in Hull, he sang in Hull Choral Union and conducted Humberside Festival Chorus. He left teaching to pursue a career as a professional conductor and vocal coach of shows in the West End. During a career that spanned over 30 years he conducted many popular shows including Aspects of Love, Cats, Me and My Girl, Fame, We Will Rock You, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Since retiring from full time professional conducting, David has returned to choral music and has, over the last 10 years, conducted major works for 2 choral societies in Bedfordshire, been Musical Director of the Military Wives Choir, and runs his own chamber choir which gives several concerts each year. He also accompanies Grimsby Philharmonic Choir and Biggleswade Choral Society of which he is also guest conductor. He adjudicates choral sections in Festivals across the UK for the Federation of Festivals and for Music For Youth. He has taught singing at many leading colleges including Guildhall, RADA, and Arts Educational Schools. Gabrielle Burgin Lister Gabrielle brings a wealth of experience to her work as an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals (BIFF), specialising in solo voice, choral, and music theatre classes, sometimes directing master classes and workshops. In conjunction with BIFF and the University of Leeds she gained a Post Graduate qualification in Performance Assessment and Adjudication. Her work takes her all over the United Kingdom, to the Irish Republic, and overseas where she is a regular visitor to the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Gabrielle studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music, winning the Jeanne Bretey scholarship for Singing. After graduation her early career was in music education, eventually becoming Director of Music in a Nottinghamshire grammar school. In addition to regular classroom teaching and advanced academic work, her extra-curricular activities involved the training of choirs and instrumental groups. A freelance career followed. As a voice teacher Gabrielle has worked with pupils of all ages, from young singers to adult professionals; she was visiting voice specialist in a number of public schools, at Trent University, and in Birmingham Conservatoire Junior Department. She concurrently studied privately in London with a number of distinguished teachers, most notably John Carol Case and Erich Vietheer. She worked briefly with the BBC Northern Singers; in a solo career her soprano repertoire embraced French, German, Italian and English Song; opera; oratorio and other large-scale choral works. Along with consultancy work and music event management, Gabrielle now continues a busy adjudicating schedule and is increasingly in demand. She is delighted to be making her first visit to the Festival.
