D Once the fence goes in, we wait for the grass to grow. According to a DPR spokesman, "During this time of year with short days, the grass will take from 120 to 150 days to grow in well. "

D During the waiting period, we will install a dedication plaque, park benches, and other amenities such as bag dispensers and a bulletin board. There will also be opportunities for volunteers to help with minor landscaping projects during this period. To get involved, email [email protected].

D The community's part in this public-private partnership with the City is to pro-vide the fencing, fixtures, and a small part of the landscaping. DPR has been more than fair in compromising with us on various issues, reducing our costs wherever possible. But building a park is not cheap. Our share adds up to about $57,000. We have raised $35,000 to date and we need your help!

D Please join our Capital Campaign as a volunteer. Email us and we'll ex-plain how you can help — it's simple and fun! [email protected]

D Consider a donation and ask your employer to make a matching donation. If you are acquainted with a family foundation, trust, civic group or business that might be interested in sponsoring the park, please give us a referral.

Striving to Make the 2008 Dog Walk Even Better:

You Talked, We Listened

Thanks to your input, we have plans to make the 2008 Dog Walk even better:

D Early birds can start walking sooner to avoid the heat: We'll have a 7:30 start time and an 8:00 am final start time. Those who wish to start early can have their photo taken and enjoy the other activities after they return from the walk.

D We'll make the registration packets smaller so you have less to carry.

D Door prizes will be faster and more fun for everyone! You will pull a numbered ticket from a box at the check-in desk. Then you'll pick up your prize with the matching num-ber whenever you're ready - it will be waiting for you at the prize table!

D New signs will be posted to encourage everyone to get their picture taken. Although donations are welcome, your dog walk souvenir photo is free!

Annual PetWalk

Sunday, October 7 The annual Hawaiian Humane Society PetWalk is another oppor-tunity for people and their pets to exercise and socialize at a fun outdoor event. And it's the only day of the year when pets are al-lowed at Ala Moana Beach Park!

In past years, Hui 'Ilio has put together a team to participate in PetWalk. This year, we will be sponsoring an exhibitor's booth. We would like to encourage you to participate in the PetWalk either by walking with your dog, or . . .

D Volunteer to work with us at our booth: Talk to other dog lovers about the dog park and encourage them to get in-volved in our community effort.

D If you plan to walk your dog, you can still come and help us at our booth. We'd be happy to accept helpers for half-hour shifts before or after the walk.

Email [email protected] to be a volunteer. All you need is your Hui 'Ilio t-shirt and a smile.

PetWalk is an important fundraiser for the Humane Society. Registra-tion begins at 7:00am at Magic Island, and the walk starts at 8:00am..

Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i - Who Are We?

Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that was estab-lished to promote public dog parks and to promote responsible dog ownership.

Its officers and directors receive no compensation. Activities of the or-ganization are carried out with the help of volunteers and sponsors.

At this time, our primary objective is to make the Hawai'i Kai Dog Park a reality. Once the park is open, we hope to be able to help other dog groups who are trying to accomplish the same goal in their respective communities.

We support organizations, publica-tions, and activities that promote responsible dog ownership by en-couraging licensing, vaccination, exercise, socialization, and the good behavior training of dogs using hu-mane training methods.
