Dogs would dig and play in the bowl, causing it to come loose from the pedestal and fall apart. In addition, there were 10 door prizes awarded in a drawing for those participants who brought gifts for less- fortunate animals receiving assistance from K9 Kokua. As always, registered par- ticipants received a free Dog Walk t-shirt, a goodie bag with gifts from our generous sponsors (see page 2) and free souvenir photos, while their dogs enjoyed socializ- ing with other dogs, cooling off in the doggie pools, and sampling the free treats. Hawaii Kai Dog Walk - June 1, 2014

Perfect weather, the best volunteers in East Honolulu, and lots of fun activities

made the 10th Annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk another great day for dogs and their

people. To celebrate the dog walk’s 10th anniversary, the first 10 people who pre-

registered for the walk were awarded special gifts. In addition, there were 10 door

prizes awarded in a drawing for those participants who brought gifts for less-

fortunate animals receiving assistance from K9 Kokua. As always, registered par-

ticipants received a free Dog Walk t-shirt, a goodie bag with gifts from our generous

sponsors (see page 2) and free souvenir photos, while their dogs enjoyed socializ-

ing with other dogs, cooling off in the doggie pools, and sampling the free treats.

OTHER DOG PARK NEWS Ala Wai K9 Playground Association

The Ala Wai Dog Park grand opening has been delayed while we await in-stallation of water fountains and bench-es. Stay tuned, it won’t be long!

Advocates for a Makiki Community Dog Park – Progress Report

After meeting with the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in June, the Advocates are very encouraged about moving forward to create an en-closed, off-leash dog park in the Makiki community. DPR has expressed great support for the prospective dog park, and the Advocates are ready to begin fundraising to help with the costs of constructing the dog park. Our first fundraiser is the Makiki Dog Walk on Saturday, August 30, 2014. For more information or to register for the dog walk, please visit www.makikidogpark.org.

The Advocates attended the Makiki Neighborhood Board meeting in June and gave the board an updated pro-posed resolution to develop and build our off-leash dog park at Punahou Square Park on the corner of Punahou St. and Wilder Ave. The Advocates look forward to the Makiki Neighbor-hood Board’s vote in the upcoming months.

In early June we attended the Hawaii Kai Dog Walk and met several Makiki/Honolulu residents who want to help with our dog park efforts. We are al-ways looking for more dog lovers who want to volunteer with the Advocates and we have various opportunities available. Please email [email protected] if you would like to volunteer with us.

SUBSCRIBER ALERT: WE’RE PHASING OUT

MAILED NEWSLETTERS

We will be mailing one newsletter per year, and all other issues will be

via email only. The annual mailing helps us to maintain current and

accurate subscriber information, while sending other issues via email

helps to keep our mailing costs to a minimum. We encourage you to

send us your current email address if you haven’t been receiving our

electronic newsletter distribution. If you do not have access to email,

the newsletters will still be available at East Honolulu vet offices,

Hawaii Kai Petco, and at the Hawaii Kai Dog Park.

PLEASE HELP US UPDATE OUR MAILING LIST!

In an effort to make our newsletters and email updates more helpful to

you, we have been working to identify which subscribers are dog park

users, whether at Hawaii Kai or another dog park on Oahu. Also, we

only have an email address for many of you, which is fine – we prefer

email distribution – but we’d love to know what area you live in. For

example, if you’re a dog park user in Hawaii Kai, we’ll keep you

informed of park closures and maintenance issues. If you’re from

Kapolei or Makiki, we’ll keep you updated on dog park efforts in your

community; and so on. Please complete the brief survey below. We

included these same questions in the email we sent you when we

distributed this newsletter. You can simply click “reply” and answer

the questions in the email and send it back to us. Or if you didn’t

receive this via email, fill in the answers below and mail it to us

(mailing address on page 4). This survey is for current subscribers.

To join our mailing list, please see page 4. Thank you!!

July is Microchip Madness month. Many vet clinics on Oahu offer microchipping of pets for a $10 flat fee, thanks to a partnership with Hawaiian Humane Society. Participating veterinarians will waive the cost of the doctor’s visit so that dogs and cats can receive the microchip implant at a substantial discount. The July promotion aims to reduce the number of lost pets in the community. See list of participating vets at www.hawaiianhumane.org/Microchip-Madness.html

Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i - Who Are We?

Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i is a 501(c)(3) non-

profit corporation that was estab-

lished to promote public dog parks

and to promote responsible dog

ownership.

Its officers and directors receive no

compensation. Activities of the or-

ganization are carried out with the

help of volunteers and sponsors.

Our first objective was to make the

Hawai'i Kai Dog Park a reality. Now

that the park is open, we help to

support it through the City’s Adopt-a

-Park program. We also reach out

to help other dog groups who are

trying to establish dog parks in their

respective communities.

We support organizations, publica-

tions, and activities that promote

responsible dog ownership by en-

couraging licensing, vaccination,

exercise, socialization, and the good

behavior training of dogs using hu-

mane training methods.
