The tendency of the body to seek and maintain a condition of

balance or equilibrium within its internal environment, even

when faced with external changes. A simple example

of homeostasis is the body's ability to maintain an internal

temperature around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, whatever the

temperature outside.

The Nervous System Purpose: to coordinate the body’s response to changes in its

internal and external environment

Major Organs and Their Functions

Brain – control center of the body, where all processes are

relayed through

-- consists of cerebrum (controls though and senses)

and cerebellum (controls motor functions)

Spinal Cord – sends instructions from the brain to the rest of

the body and vice versa

-- any organism with a major nerve cord is classified as

a chordate

Nerves – conduct impulses to muscle cells throughout the

body

Review of Levels of Organization

Cells – the basic unit of life

Tissues – clusters of cells performing a similar function

Organs – made of tissues that perform one specific

function

Organ Systems – groups of organs that perform a

specific purpose in the human body

Organism – Groups of organ systems working together

to make up an organism.

***The purpose of the organ systems is for the human body to

maintain homeostasis. When the balance is disrupted, the body

systems may not function properly and human health can suffer.

(please copy the above sentences below, above, or near the

body system chart)

Body Systems Project

Work in groups to research an assigned body system, create a visual aid, and

present information to the class. Information presented during the presentation

will be used to fill in a chart that will be used as a study guide for the quiz.

What to Research for your assigned body system: o List and explain the functions of the organ system

o Identify the major organs and their functions

o Describe a disease associated with their body system.

Visual Aid: o Title

o Outline of body

o Diagram of body system and major organs

o Neat, easy to understand & read

Presentation: o Present all required information above

o Organized and easy to follow

o All group members participate equally in the presentation

o Spoken clearly and eye contact with audience

Teamwork:

• Did you share examples and give descriptions of

interactions with other body systems

• Presentations:

• Did you have at least 5-6 slides (not counting the title slide)?

• Did the slides enhance the presentation?

• Was the information presented in an organized manner?

• Did you “know” the information? You should know the

information well enough that you don’t need to read it word

for word.

• Did you present to the class? Don’t talk to the whiteboard or

screen.

• Did you practice? Be sure to run through your presentation

a few times before you present to the class.

Assign Groups

• You have 30

seconds to get into

groups.

Page 18: Human Anatomy and Body Systems Project - Sol de Terracemslangssciencestuff.weebly.com › uploads › 4 › 6 › 7 › 2 › ... · Body Systems Project Work in groups to research

Jobs/ Responsibilities

1. Researcher

2. Visual aid creator

3. Transcriber (writes down information in

project)

4. Helper (in charge of keeping project and

group organized, creating timeline,

planning, and helping visual aid creator &

researcher)

Page 19: Human Anatomy and Body Systems Project - Sol de Terracemslangssciencestuff.weebly.com › uploads › 4 › 6 › 7 › 2 › ... · Body Systems Project Work in groups to research

Now that you’re in groups.

Assign group roles.

• Please note!!! This is a group effort, you

may need to do more research today than

later, so you may want two people doing

research while the other two people start

getting the visual aid planned.

Project Time!

Take this time to work on your

projects with your groups.

Expectations: Work quietly and quickly. Today you should

get your research started and going and have a rough

sketch of your visual aid (what it will look like, what you are

doing for a visual aid, etc)

The Digestive System

Purpose: to convert food particles into simpler

micromolecules that can be absorbed into the

bloodstream and used by the body

Major Organs and their Functions:

Mouth – to chew and grind up food

-- saliva also begins the chemical breakdown

Esophagus – pipe connecting mouth to stomach

Stomach – secretes an extraordinarily strong acid (pH = 2) that

leads to breakdown of food

-- once the food is broken down in the stomach and

mixed with digestive juices, it is called chyme

The Excretory System

Purpose: to rid the body of wastes, including excess water

and salts

Major Organs and Their Functions

Kidneys – the main organs of the excretory system

-- waste-laden blood enters the kidney and the kidney

filters out urea, excess water and other waste

products, which eventually travel out of the kidney as

urine

-- eventually they travel through the ureter to the

urinary bladder

Rectum – solid (food) waste travels out of the body through

the rectum

Page 25: Human Anatomy and Body Systems Project - Sol de Terracemslangssciencestuff.weebly.com › uploads › 4 › 6 › 7 › 2 › ... · Body Systems Project Work in groups to research

Skin – sweat glands remove excess water and salts from the

body

Lungs – expel the waste gas carbon dioxide

Skeletal and Muscular System

Page 36: Human Anatomy and Body Systems Project - Sol de Terracemslangssciencestuff.weebly.com › uploads › 4 › 6 › 7 › 2 › ... · Body Systems Project Work in groups to research

Skeletal System Purpose: To provide structure and support to the human

body.

Major Organs: Bones.

Major bones: Femur (thigh bone); Cranium (skull); Vertebrae

(back)

Muscular System

Purpose: Works with the

skeletal and nervous system to

produce movement, also helps

to circulate blood through the

human body.

Major Organs: Muscles

Major Muscles: Biceps, triceps,

glutes

Tongue Twister

AS FAST AS YOU CAN repeat the purpose of the skeletal

system to each other 5 times. When you have finished have

your partner repeat the purpose of the skeletal system back to

you 5 times. Do the same thing with the muscular.

Respiratory System Circulatory System

Page 41: Human Anatomy and Body Systems Project - Sol de Terracemslangssciencestuff.weebly.com › uploads › 4 › 6 › 7 › 2 › ... · Body Systems Project Work in groups to research

The Respiratory System Purpose: to provide the body with a fresh supply of oxygen

for cellular respiration and remove the waste product carbon

dioxide

Major Organs and Their Functions

Nose – internal entry and exit point for air

Pharynx – serves as a passage way for both air and food at

the back of the throat

Larynx – your “voicebox”, as air passes over your vocal

chords, you speak

Trachea – the “windpipe”, or what connects your pharynx to

your lungs

-- a piece of skin, called the epiglottis, covers the

trachea when you swallow, preventing food from

entering

The Circulatory System Purpose: to deliver oxygenated blood to the various cells and

organ systems in your body so they can undergo cellular

respiration

Major Organs and Their Functions

Heart – the major muscle of the circulatory system

-- pumps blood through its four chambers (two

ventricles and two atria)

-- pumps deoxygenated blood into the lungs, where it

gets oxygenated, returned to the heart, and then

pumped out through the aorta to the rest of the body

-- valve regulate the flow of blood between the

chambers
