Two stories
• The story of positions
– An eagle sits on top of a tree looks around and does nothing
– A rabbit admires and replicates the eagle’s posture at the ground
– Soon a fox jumps on the rabbit and kills it
To be able to sit, look and do nothing you must be at a very top position

Two stories
• The story of mentality– A grumbling customer contested the salesman “I am not
happy with your attitude!”
– The salesman said “I just work here.”
– The customer said “I would like to talk to your supervisor.”
– The salesman repeated “He also works here.”
– The customer said “I would like to talk to your boss then.”
– The salesman smilingly said “But he doesn’t work here”
Symptoms of a failing organization and bad work mentality

Career Building
• In general, three different stages for a professional engineer
– Experience building stage
• This stage usually takes 10 years to build up the competency and good command of the knowledge and skills
• You may need to hop around a bit at the beginning to find your destined career
• Better keep this “honeymoon” stage short, a prolonged period and frequent change of jobs will lead you to nowhere
• Once identify your career, you should work hard and learn more, don’t mind to work more, may be under paid, be patient, take on professional development programs and follow superiors’ orders (buy-in)
43© Vocational Training Council, Hong Kong ENG 3418 Engineers in Society ENG Dept
Career Building
– Development stage
• You may take 10 to 15 years to develop your career further and more in depth in an area which help you to build up your position in a company or the authority in society
• In this stage, you should be more responsible and accountable for the jobs which require your knowledge and skill of the business and professional judgment/inputs
• You should acquire more academic and professional qualifications to boost up your image
• Skills in politics, management, human relationship, and finance will become more important than the technical competent skills
• A stage to build up your connection network – play a helping or assistant role
44© Vocational Training Council, Hong Kong ENG 3418 Engineers in Society ENG Dept
Career Building
– Harvest stage
• You will have 10 or more years to make good use of what you have built in the earlier two stages. Apart from getting more pay, you should be more contributive to
– Both inside and outside your job territory
– Involve in works in society and professional bodies
• Usually you are at a high position in an organization and you are expected to lead the organization and not to involve in the front line work
• Connection network – play a directive role
• Upbringing of younger engineers for succession planning
