OVERVIEW• You will learn about the process of human development from fertilization to birth and

major changes that occur in each trimester of pregnancy.

FIRST TRIMESTER: MONTH ONE • By the end of four weeks:

∞ The fetus is developing its brain and spinal cord

∞ The heart is beginning to form

∞ Buds that are supposed to be arms and legs appear

∞ The fetus is 1/25 of an inch long

FIRST TRIMESTER: MONTH TWO• By the end of eight weeks:

∞ All of the fetus’s major organs are forming, as well as the external structures

∞ Arms and legs grow longer, and fingers and toes start to form

∞ The sex organs are beginning to form. However, you will not be able to determine the baby’s sex.

∞ Eyes move forward and eyelids are forming

∞ The umbilical cord is forming

∞ The baby is about 1 inch long and weighs less than 1/8 of an ounce

FIRST TRIMESTER: MONTH THREE

• By the end of 12 weeks:

∞ The nerves and muscles begin to work together

∞ You will be able to determine the baby's sex

∞ Eyelids close to protect the eye and remain closed until 28 weeks

∞ The baby is about 3 inches long and weighs almost an ounce

SECOND TRIMESTER: MONTH FOUR• By the end of 16 weeks:

∞ Muscle tissue and bone continue to form and create a complex skeleton

∞ Skin forms and is easy to see through

∞ The baby is about 4 or 5 inches long and weighs almost three ounces

∞ Taste buds form

∞ Foot/fingerprints have formed

∞ Hair grows on the baby’s head

THIRD TRIMESTER: MONTH SEVEN• By the end of 32 weeks:

∞ The baby’s bones are fully developed, but still soft

∞ The baby kicks and jabs forcefully

∞ The eyes can open and close and sense changes in light

∞ Lungs are fully formed, but not functional

∞ The baby’s body begins to store vital minerals

∞ The baby is gaining about ½ a pound a week and is now about 4 to 4½ pounds

THIRD TRIMESTER: MONTH EIGHT• By the end of 36 weeks:

∞ Body fat increases

∞ The baby weighs about 6 to 6½ pounds and is 16 to 19 inches
