Deputies Focus on Quality

This term sees some changes in the roles and responsibilities of our three Deputy Principals, with a new role created in response to the changes in education and the integration of new technology.

Ms Sainsbury and Mr Curry continue in their Relieving Deputy Principal roles, with Ms Sainsbury responsible for Years 7, 9 and 11, and Mr Curry now looking after our Year 8, 10 and 12 students, while Mr Colley takes on the new role of Deputy Principal – Quality Teaching.

The changes that have occurred in education require new and innovative design responses to rethink how schools work, how teachers teach and how students learn. As Deputy Principal – Quality Teaching, Mr Colley will provide consultative and supportive leadership for staff and students to ensure quality teaching and learning that is innovative and future-focused in preparation for new teaching and learning environments when the redevelopment of Hunter Sports High School is complete by early 2019.

The key focus areas for Mr Colley’s role include professional learning, learning and teaching, technology, assessment and innovative learning spaces.

Subject Selection Nights Help Students Decide Future Studies Our three very well attended subject selection evenings were held last week for our current Year 10 students and their parents/carers. The events, held at the school and also on the Central Coast and Raymond Terrace, were a great opportunity for students and their families to find out more about their HSC study options as they head into their senior years. Subject selection interviews will be held with Year 10 students next week. Students will be allocated a time for their interview and parents/carers are welcome to attend. If you have any questions regarding subject selections, please contact Mr Curry via the school office on 4943 5755.

HSC Reforms Announced Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli announced last week what the HSC will look like come 2020 for students across NSW, with the curriculum to be redesigned and modernised for the first time in 17 years, with emerging technology at the heart of the syllabus changes. Hunter Sports High School is committed to ensuring our teaching and learning practices equip our students with the skills needed to be successful when they leave school, in particular with the announcement of minimum standards for literacy and numeracy. Our school continues to work on and implement strategies to enhance student literacy and numeracy skills and we are excited about the changes ahead that will bring the HSC up to speed with technology. NAIDOC Day During the last week of last term, Hunter Sports High School celebrated NAIDOC in fantastic fashion. The Minimbah team worked tirelessly to organise a host of engaging, informative sessions for students from HSHS and our Community of Schools (including Wiripaang, Mt Hutton and Windale).

We began the day with an assembly led by Dakota Blacklock and an address by Aunty Laurel. She informed us about the meaning of NAIDOC and the importance of stories to Aboriginal people. It was incredibly meaningful and well received.

The students then participated in sessions involving craft, Aboriginal language, bush tucker, Aboriginal dance, artefacts and history. Each session went for almost an hour and students left the sessions with tangible information or an item that they had created. Students also learnt how to dance, how to treat various illnesses with traditional bush medicine and how to play a variety of traditional Indigenous games.

The day culminated in a dance display from a young group from the Central Coast and our own Hunter Sports High School dance group. It was a wonderful day that only came about by the hard work of our Minimbah team and with awesome support from our parents. Thank you so much to all involved for a deadly day!

FACULTY NEWS: CAPAL

Music News In Term 2 the band performed for the first time this year. We travelled to Lakeside Special School in Gateshead for a celebratory ceremony for their new acquisition, a new school bus. We were treated afterwards to some great morning tea. The HSHS band members were well presented, played superbly, and represented their school well. We have also been busy in our classrooms. Year 8 having been loving their ukulele lessons this term with Mrs Hudson. Art News Term 2 was devoted to developing our ceramics skills, with Year 7 making clay portraits, Year 8 using their learned portraiture skills to create some outstanding fantasy heads, Year 9 learning fundamental pottery techniques and Year 10 branching into self-directed ceramic investigations. The junior students are looking forward to painting their work and getting them home to show their parents. There’s a lot of pride here from the students toward their work and from me for the students. We were also lucky to have Miss Limond spend her practicum here. Her skateboard unit allowed students to achieve great results. This term, Year 7 will be learning how to paint landscapes, Year 8 will be making lino prints based on the beach and sea, Year 9 will be painting large landscapes on canvas, Year 10 will be starting to plan their major works and Year 11 will be investigating and analysing political and protest art. Given the current American election, there should be quite a few interesting conversations. Japanese ‘Pokemon Go’ fever has hit Hunter Sports High School! In Japanese we have been learning about the Japanese language that has been used to name Pokemon and the connections Pokemon have to Japanese folklore. Year 7 have been working on their anime drawing skills to create pictures of Pikachu, Charmander and Squirtle - we have some future animators in our midst! This term we are exploring the culinary delights of Japan with an excursion to the Nagisa Japanese Restaurant in Honeysuckle, where students will indulge in a three-course Japanese banquet. Sushi, tempura (deep fried vegetables), takoyaki (octopus balls) and green tea ice cream are just some of the delicious foods we will try! This excursion is on the 8th of September and spaces are limited to 50 students. Miss O’Brien and Mrs Ingram have notes on request. Year 9 will also be testing their cooking skills in class where they will make okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) and dessert takoyaki.

CAPAL Continued: Turning Japanese

Our April 2017 trip to Japan is slowly creeping closer and our excitement is rising as we continue to fundraise and plan our itinerary. Last term we held a very successful trivia night at Windale Bowling Club, as well as a guessing competition and Scentsy fundraiser. We are grateful to Windale Bowling Club and to those businesses that provided prizes for these events, without whom our fundraising wouldn’t be possible. These include: Nagisa Japanese Restaurant, Asa Don Japanese Restaurant, Belmont 16 Footers, Strike Bowling, Mojo Health, Poppies Nursery and more! Our lucky winners have been contacted by phone. These three fundraisers have raised over $1000 for our students going to Japan, and we are very appreciative of the support we have had from the school community. Details will come in the following weeks about our Term 3 Pie Drive and other fundraisers. All parents/carers and students going on our 2017 Japan trip are required to come to a meeting in the school library at 6pm on Tuesday September 6th (please note the change of date. It will no longer be held on Tuesday August 2nd). Notes will be sent home. As this meeting will discuss vital organisation details about passports, payments, itineraries and activities it is important that someone from each family can attend. Below are some of the amazing places we will be visiting:

FACULTY NEWS: BIG PICTURE

In big news for Hunter Sports High’s Big Picture Academy, Newcastle University have officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Big Picture Education Australia. The university will now accept Big Picture students through a presentation and portfolio admission pathway. Big Picture senior students Sophie Nenadovic, Hamish Thomson and David Parsons can be very proud of their determination and commitment to pursuing their passion at a senior level. Combined with their Learning Through Internship and the academic rigors of the senior academy, these students have thrived for the last four years. They have worked hard to establish connections with various experts within the University of Newcastle, as they prepare for the pilot launch of the Senior Big Picture Presentation and Portfolio admission process.

Sophie, Hamish and David have been invited by the CEO of Big Picture Australia to the three-day National Big Picture Conference to be held in Freemantle in early September. The students will present on their educational journeys and then facilitate workshops to educators, business leaders and other conference attendees.

Year 12: Darko Nikic has successfully transitioned to full-time TAFE. He is studying the Certificate IV in Property Services as he is an aspiring Real Estate Agent. His Learning Through Internship (LTI) Mentor, established through the school, is happy to continue to support Darko in terms of work placement and providing him work experience to develop his skills and build his industry knowledge.

Year 11: Zoe Jones has successfully transitioned to TAFE and is studying for her Certificate III in Fitness during Term 3, which will qualify her as a gym instructor. She will then study the Cert IV in Term 4 which will qualify her as a personal trainer. Zoe’s LTI Mentor from SNAP Fitness in Maitland will continue to support her with her work placement requirements. Former HSHS student Luke Merchant has been one of Zoe's workplace supervisors and will continue to mentor Zoe as she works her way through her qualifications.

Breanna Steadman has also transitioned to TAFE studying the Certificate III Fitness course as well.

Jillian Gale has successfully enrolled in the Diploma of Beauty Therapy through Advanced Careers College. This course could potentially provide Jillian an ATAR of around 65-75 and normally costs $13500. Jillian was able to enrol for $3000 and she could potentially be fully qualified by the end of the year.

Maddison Hugo has successfully transitioned to full-time employment at the Sumo Salad store at Charlestown Square.

BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT

Year 9 Student Reports: “My name is Piper Richards and I am in the Big Picture Year 9 Advisory. On Wednesday July 20th I visited Newcastle University with Year 11 student David Parsons and Mr Staley. I met with Professor Paul Tooney who works in the school of Biomedical Science and Pharmacy. He gave us a detailed tour of his labs, which is where he conducts his research into the causes of, and the solutions to, schizophrenia. He showed us where the undergraduate students do their lab work. There were two labs and both of them were huge – each lab could seat up to 78 students. The thing that interests me about research and lab work is how they create the cures for diseases, and what kind of resources they use to research them. All of this is in hope of beginning an internship with the School of Biomedical Science and Pharmacy. This experience has taught me that there are more pathways through research instead of one road, which I can think about and plan for my career in the future.” “My name is Caitlyn Goldie. My Learning Through Internship is at All 4x4 Spares Kotara. I go every Tuesday by making my own way there. I work with Perry and Paul who are two of the mechanics sharing their knowledge with me. While there I have pulled an exhaust off and put it back on, and I then took off a bull bar and put it back on. What interests me about this work? I love getting my hands dirty, by learning how to pull apart cars and parts and then learning how to fix them and assemble them back onto the vehicles. This internship gives me plenty of time and space to do that. I hope to take this experience into my future and become a mechanic. This experience is improving my knowledge and skills to perform tasks which normally I would not have had these opportunities. I love to learn new skills and I really like the people who are teaching me.” “My name is Jai Cochrane and I currently go to Hunter Sports High school. On the last week of Term 2, I went to Diamond IT and worked with a group of men that have a very high understanding of computers and other IT products. During the week at Diamond IT I did lots of hands on work from installing software and restarting terminal servers all the way to pulling apart a computer to fix hardware problems. I love hands on work and that’s why I want to be in this field of work. I also love solving things and especially if it incorporates computers. I’ve always been told how to use technology and I love the fact that technology changes all the time. In the future I hope to grow from this and do courses next year in ICT, so by year 11 I will have a full-time job in the area that I always wanted to work in.” Big Picture Advisors are very proud of the outstanding effort students put into their portfolio and are excited for their success in the future.

Sportsperson of the Month

Our latest round of Sportspeople of the Month were announced at last term’s assembly. Congratulations to the following students on their outstanding sporting achievements and on their recognition as Hunter Sports High Sportspersons of the Month.

APRIL: Pasami Saulo (Year 12) Pasami has had an outstanding rugby league season to date. A damaging forward, this young man is a vital component of the school’s Open team. So far in 2016 he has represented at Hunter Region, Greater Northern and NSW level in the school system. Outside of school he is a member of the Newcastle Knights SG Ball Squad and he has recently been promoted to the Toyota Cup U20 team. He was recently awarded the Carlson/Johns Trophy as the most outstanding junior rugby league player at the Newcastle Knights for the recently completed representative season. Pasami was instrumental in the U18 NSW State of Origin side who beat Queensland in the curtain-raiser to the main game (Game 2) in Brisbane. Note: Since receiving this award Pasami has been named in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League team. See more above right.

MAY: Ashlee Brodigan (Year 11) Ashlee represents Hunter Sports High School in football. An excellent attacking player, she is a member of the Emerging Jets program and is also a contracted member of the Jets W League team. She recently represented Northern NSW at the National Training Centre Challenge in Canberra where her performances were recognised with selection in the Australian U16 merit team. With continued focus and hard work, many appearances for junior national teams are within her grasp.

JUNE: Annalee Grove (Year 9) Annalee is a goalkeeper in Hunter Sports High's football program and like our previous winner, is in the Emerging Jets program as well as being a train on member of the Jets W League squad. She also represented Northern NSW at the recent National Training Centre Challenge in Canberra. Her performances saw her named the Outstanding Goalkeeper of the tournament and like Ashlee she was rewarded with selection in the Australian U16 merit side.

Pasami Selected in Schoolboys:

Congratulations to Pasami Saulo who was last week announced in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League team to take on England Academy in a two-test series starting on Sunday. The team, which was named following the Australian Secondary Schools Under 18 National Championships in Wynnum, will play in Queensland on Sunday and in Sydney on August 6. Congratulations to Pasami on this outstanding achievement and good luck in the big games!

HSHS Girls in Young Matildas:

Hunter Sports High School footballers dominated the Young Matildas selections with five of our girls (and two ex-students) selected in the Under 19 Australian squad who are currently competing at the AFF Championships in Myanmar.

At just 15 years of age, Year 9 student Annalee Grove capped a memorable month with her selection in the squad after being named as the Goalkeeper of the series at the NTC Challenge in Canberra earlier this month.

Fellow Hunter Sports High students and Jets W-League players Ashlee Brodigan, Clare Wheeler, Brooke Miller, Sophie Nenadovic and former students Hannah Bourke and Hannah Southwell were also selected in the 23-woman squad. Congratulations girls and good luck!

Sangha Signed by Sydney Thunder

Year 11 student Jason Sangha continues his rapid rise through the cricketing ranks, becoming the youngest player to be contracted for the Big Bash League at just 16 years old when he was signed with the Sydney Thunder last week.

The reigning champions have signed Jason on a Community Rookie contract for the upcoming season (starting December 20) and have also made him the first recipient of the MoneyGram Cricket Scholarship, a program designed to reward local cricketers of South Asian background and to help with education in cricket.

Congratulations to Jason on this incredible achievement and best wishes for a big season ahead.

Pan Pac Gold Year 8 student John Crameri brought back a gold medal from the Pan Pacific Championships in Auckland recently. John was a member of the Sydney University Pirates Under 14 water polo side who took out the championships. Congratulations John!

Former Students Represent Congratulations to former students Nakia Davis-Welsh and Caitlin Moran who represented NSW claiming victory over Queensland in Rugby League Interstate Challenge. Nakia was in the TSP Rugby Union program and Caitlin the Touch Football program. The coach of the side was current TSP Rugby League coach Ben Cross.

Tackling Domestic Violence:

Hunter Sports High welcomed former Newcastle Knight and NRL Player’s Association President Clint Newton to the school at the end of last term when he visited to deliver a workshop with Year 9 students as part of the NSW Government’s state-wide Tackling Violence program.

Clint was joined by anti-violence educator Ashlee Donahue who said the program uses rugby league as a vehicle to get the domestic violence message out into the public arena.

The Tackling Violence program helps teenagers to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy relationships and to identify warning signs for the latter.

Regional Athletics Carnival: There are so many talented athletes at Hunter Sports High that our school is its own zone at this week’s Regional Athletics Carnival being held at Hunter Sports Centre at Glendale. Over 80 of our students qualified for the regional carnival and have been competing yesterday and today against the best athletes from across the Hunter.

There have been some outstanding performances by our students and many should qualify for the State Championships to be held at Sydney Olympic Park from 7-9 September.

Highlights that we know of so far include:

• Cohan Geelan (Year 9) 1st in Long Jump • Teah MacPherson (Year 10) 1st in 100m • Renee Poutney (Year 10) 2nd in 100m

A full report, final results and photos will be included in our next newsletter.
