Taking that classic photo with Santa atthe mall can be scary for any child, but itcan be even scarier and overwhelming fora child on the autism spectrum. Loud holi-day music, endless lines, flashing twinklelights, the ambient noise of the passersby, followed by a booming HO HO HO! fromSanta might just send the children withautism spectrum disorders, sensory inte-gration disorders, or other developmentaldelays over the edge. The end result is amiserable experience for both the familyand the child. Fisher-Titus Medical CentersAutism Spectrum Kids program (ASK) hasteamed up with Premiere Theater 8 in Nor-walk to bring families and children with au-tism and other disabilities a special event

this holiday season. The event will includea sensory friendly Santa, crafts, and a sen-sory friendly showing of the holiday favor-ite, The Polar Express. The Sensory Friend-ly Movie and Santa event is scheduled forSaturday, Dec.7. It will begin at 10 a.m. withSanta and holiday crafts with the movie

beginning promptly at 10:45 a.m. At oursensory friendly Santa and holiday event, the environment will be modified to de-crease the likelihood that the child will be-come overstimulated and overwhelmed, said Lindsey Esker, Pediatric ProgrammingCoordinator at Fisher-Titus Medical Center. These modifications will include no loudholiday music, sensory break areas setup for children who need a break or whoare scared, sensory friendly crafts for thosewho have difficulty waiting in line, and aSanta who is patient and experienced withchildren with special needs.

Parents are encouraged to bring theircameras so that they can snap a photo oftheir child with Santa. If needed, parents

can take several photos to get that perfectholiday picture. Following the Santa andcraft activities, Premiere Theater 8 is fea-turing a sensory friendly showing of ThePolar Express. Admission to the movie willbe free for each person who brings in anon-perishable good to be donated to the

local Salvation Army. Otherwise, tickets are$5.50 each.

Children on the autism spectrum oftenhave difficulty transitioning to new activi-ties. To help prepare the children for theholiday event, a Seeing Santa social storyhas been created. This social story will bemailed out to the ASK mailing list, will be atthe theater, and is available upon requestto anyone who will be attending the event.

For more information on the sensoryfriendly Santa and movie showing of ThePolar Express, or any of Fisher-Titus Medi-cal Centers pediatric programs, pleasecontact Lindsey Esker at 419-660-2117, Ext.3040.

One of their sled reindeers will also bemaking the trip with them. Santa couldnot disclose the reindeers identity yet,

since the trip to Huron is the grand prizefor the reindeer games. The winning rein-deer will be announced at a North Polenews conference the evening before thetrip. The Christmas with Santa event begins

at 3:30 pm and will continue until 8:00

pm. Santa said that he and Mrs. Claus lookforward to hearing about special gift re-quests so they can update their list. Whenasked about his reason for visiting theBoat Basin each year, Santa replied well, the best part is talking with the children. But Mrs. Claus smiled and said that healso likes the cookies and hot chocolate. There is no charge for admission. With Sandusky in the midst of a restaurant renaissance, its no surprise that the catalysts of this culinary move-ment are back at it once again. Chef Cesare and AndreaAvallone, owners of various local dining establishmentsincluding Zinc Brasserie, Crush Winebar, Crush Kitchen-bar and Dockside Cafe have a new project simmering.

Zincs new location on 215 East Water Street is signifi-cantly larger than the original restaurant, affording theAvallones a chance to fulfill their new vision, but also

the opportunity to enhance the experience through pa-trons feedback.

As a restaurant owner and chef, youre always listen-ing and learning, states Chef Cesare. This unique spacefinally gives us the chance to use some of those sugges-tions that we have heard the past several years. A largercapacity with more seating being at the forefront.

While adding to the formal dining experience was veryimportant to the new establishment, so was preservingthe past. From exposing brick and repurposing buildingelements to transporting Zincs existing bar and classic

menu items, the historical significance of the buildingstays intact as does the recognizable feel of the originalZinc.

We felt it was all about balance, says Andrea Aval-lone. Everyone enjoys something new but still likes agrasp on the familiar. Weve accomplished that in thenew space.

With this appropriately sized location, the Avalloneswill introduce Hearth Tavern. Diners craving hand-craft-

ed wood fired pizzas and an extensive craft beer list canrejoice. Hearth Tavern, the latest creation from this dy-namic duo, features a state-of-the-art wood fired oven, multiple beer taps and even wine taps that give diners acausal option in the same building. The new establishment is slated to open early 2014

while the annual New Years Party will still be takingplace at the existing Zinc location.

The sixth grade Gifted Language Arts class at Wood-lands Intermediate School has been studying the dif-ferent types of poetry and creating poetry books. Thisyears class of 14 students has done an exceptional job

and they have generated some high quality work intheir writing and illustrating of their poetry books, ex-plained Mr. Dale Casper, Gifted Intervention Specialistfor Woodlands. The students have written upwards of50 poems and have selected their best works for theirbooks. Each poem was to fall within a certain catego-ry. The categories were voted on by the class. Nature,Sports, Super Powers and Potpourri were the selectedcategories for this years poetry book.

The World of Poems written and illustrated by ReceGimperling is a finely crafted piece filled with 24 of theyoung authors favorite works. For Rece writing poetrycomes to her naturally. Often times an idea will come toher and she will tuck it away to write about it later, sheexplained. For example, she was inspired to write Fall-ing Leaves after raking leaves in her front yard. Rece hasfound her greatest challenge to be continuing to come

up with ideas to write about. Having completed over 50poems she has selected what she feels are the best 24

for her poetry book. One of the most important lessonsRece has learned from this assignment is to take hertime and not to rush through writing or illustrating herbook. In addition to writing poetry, Rece likes to writeshort stories.

Luke Hanley, author and illustrator of Night of the Liv-ing Poem, had been working on his book for over twoweeks. Complete with 21 of his favorite poems, Lukepreferred the rhyming couplet style of poetry the best.As he explained the rhyming pattern to be: aa, bb, cc. etc.He liked the challenge this particular style offered andshared the secret to his writing success. When you cantthink of something to rhyme, go through the alphabetand try to find a rhyming word with each letter. Rhym-ing couplets are frequently off topic so it is ok that theyare fun, explained Luke. One of Lukes favorite poemsin his book was about baseball and titled Grand Slam.He chose this as a favorite because he felt it was wellwritten and contained a metaphor. In addition to po-etry, Luke likes to write reports about people.

As the poetry books are nearing completion, Mr.Caspers sixth grade Language Arts class will be holdinga poetry reading for Ms. Galloways third grade class.

Mr. Caspers students will also have the opportunity

to select their favorite poem to submit to Creative Kidsmagazine. Over the years Mr. Casper has had severalstudents published in this magazine. Competition israther tough as students are competing on a nationallevel. Creative Kids is a national magazine geared to-ward gifted students between the ages of 8 and 16.

Searching for a job, having your resume just right andbeing prepared with top notch employability skills canbe tough for some. Especially for those who have beenout of the workforce for a time and on public assistance.EHOVE Adult Career Center started managing a pro-gram in October that will help people in this situationtransition successfully into a career.

Considered to be a welfare to work program, EHOVEsPEAK program will put people to work through jobs atits facility in Fremont, while also teaching them vitalemployability skills to help them search for jobs, createa strong resume, communicate well and have a strongwork ethic. This effort is funded through a contract withSandusky County Job & Family Services.

Our goal is to prepare them for jobs, help businesses, prepare our local workforce and help move them off

public assistance, said EHOVE Adult Career Centers PhilJohnson who is administering the grant and managing

the facility. He works on site with a team of EHOVE staffmembers to train the workers and manage the projects.

Participants spend part of their day in training butanother part of their day working on projects. Incomegenerated from these projects helps to offset public as-sistance funds while also preparing participants to earncertifications like OSHA, IC3 and forklift operator. John-son says PEAK is now offering online GED opportunitiesand will soon offer office training. The program also allots a set number of hours for par-

ticipants to search for a job. The number of hours foreach varies and is determined after a review of theirsituation by Sandusky County Job & Family Services. To enable them to consistently report to the facilityand search for jobs, the participants also have access totransportation vouchers.

Local businesses who have work that can be out-sourced can arrange for it to be completed through thisprogram. The facility has plenty of space, a loading dockand equipment necessary to perform many differenttypes of projects for private businesses and industriesas well as local government entities. Examples of pastprojects include cutting and rolling tool box liners, wir-ing assembly, shredding documents and assemblingcomponents.

Adam Schaloff of Bellevue participated in the programand found a job just three

weeks after starting theprogram. I think its prettygood, said Schaloff. Ithelps push people alongto learn skills for the realworld.

Businesses who are in-terested in touring the fa-cility or finding out if PEAKservices are right for themare encouraged to con-tact Business Liaison TinaSchank at 419-355-1750.More information will beavailable at www.EHOVE.net in the coming weeks.
