Huron High School students had the pleasure of “sending off” one of their own this week. On Tuesday afternoon classes wrapped up a few minutes early to pay tribute to fellow classmate, Max Parell. For the sixth year in a row, Max competed in the Spe- cial Olympics Ohio - State Winter Games. Max raced in the Alpine Ski Event at Brandywine Ski Resort in Peninsula, Ohio on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Ski- ing at the intermediate level, Max participated in both the Giant Slalom and the Downhill compe- tition. Time trials took place on Wednesday and from this event Max was placed by ability for the nal competition on Thursday. “Max is very excited! He’s been practicing and is ready,” stated his mother, Julie Parel l on T uesday. The mother-son team has shared the passion of skiing since Max was eight years old. An excel- lent skier herself, Julie Parell has shared in the coaching respon- sibilities with Ms. Gayle Plough, from the Cleveland area. Plough is a Ski Instructor at Brandywine Ski Resort and has been working with Max for the past three years. Max enjoys skiing competitively as well as with his peers through the Huron Ski Club, stated his mother. “It is great to see them all take off together and push each other past their comfort zones.” As of just last week Max is the proud owner of his very own brand new pair of skis. Max de- scribes his new skis as “green” with “supersonic speed”. He was hopeful and condent they would bring him good luck this week as he took on yet another Special Olympic challenge. “Max is an amazing kid! We have learned as much from him as he has from us,” stated Mr. Scott Mathany, Principal Huron High School. The Huron stu- dents adore Max. A “Good Luck Max” banner was made to hang in the school and is covered with signatures in support of him, he continued. “I have been teaching for 30  years at Huron High School and Max is the rst student with Down’s syndrome that I have had in my class. It has been such a pleasure to work with him. His cheer- ful spirit and willing- ness to try anything I give him is always a positive part of my day. The students re- ally seem to enjoy him and it is really they who benet from his inclusion within the school. I believe seeing his abili- ties shine forth is an inspiration to many of us,” stated Mrs. Connie Bunn, Special Education Teacher. Max has had all of Huron High School cheering for him and sup- porting him the whole way . As students lined the halls, the pep band played, Max wore his ski numbers as he travelled the halls high-ving his classmates and taking in the moment. Heading into his sixth Special Olympic competition, Max has earned 5 gold medals, 2 silvers and 1 bronze. Best of Luck Max!
