Online Course Program

AP, Honors and Electives

(As printed in the current Student Handbook)

IN MOST CASES, STUDENTS NEED TO SIGN UP FOR AN ONLINE CLASS DIRECTLY

WITH THE ONLINE SCHOOL!

o DUAL ENROLLMENT registration must be done BY THE STUDENT at the university

website and is generally due by JULY 1

o ALHSO CLASS registration is done BY THE STUDENT. Instructions sent by HVL in

early July.

o Michigan Virtual and Oxford Courses are enrolled by HVL for the student.

HVL offers numerous online courses for high school credit through MVHS, ALHSO and OVA. These

courses include all Advanced Placement Courses, Honors Courses and many electives. These online

classes are offered at Huron Valley Lutheran High School so that students can have more scheduling

options, and can take classes that normally could not be offered. Students cannot take an online class in

place of the same class that is offered at HVL unless they are unable to take the regular classroom course

because of a scheduling conflict. In some cases, students taking an AP class may take a test at the end of

the course to earn college credit; however, students should check with prospective colleges to see if they

accept AP credits. Online high school classes will be granted credit, calculated in the GPA, and listed on

the transcript the same as any regular classroom course.

Requirements to Enroll - Online and Dual Enrollment courses require energetic, involved and

motivated students. Due to the independent nature of online classes, students are solely responsible to

stay current with all assignments. Failed online courses may have to be made up in order to meet

graduation requirements. Students who wish to enroll in a high school online course must have the

approval of the HVL faculty and a minimum GPA of 3.75 for AP/Honors classes and cumulative GPA of

3.00 for other online courses. Dual Enrollment College courses may be taken by qualified students in

grades 11-12. HVL students in grades 11-12 must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and qualifying ACT score

(Eng. 18 Math 22 Read 22 Sci 23) and the approval of the advisor in order to enroll in a Dual Enrollment

College Credit course. Any exceptions to the GPA requirements must receive advisor and administrative

approval.

Online Course Cost: There is an additional cost for taking elective, AP or honors online courses and

parents will pay a fee of $100 for each semester of an elective online course as well as paying for any

books and special course fees. (College dual enrollment is free to students – see following). HVL will

pay the remainder of the cost of the course. The only exception to this rule is in the case of a student who

cannot take a course required for graduation because it does not fit into the HVL schedule. In these cases,

HVL will pay for some, or all of the course, fee depending on individual circumstances, provided that the

student has not previously failed that course. If the student is taking an online course because they failed

the course at HVL or a previous school or if they choose to enroll in a core class to accelerate their

education, the family will pay the full cost of the course.

Course Changes: During the first ten days of a semester, students may make course changes. Students

may not add/drop a class after the first ten days of the semester. Any course changes during the ten day

period will incur a $20 administrative fee per change. During the last five (5) academic weeks of a

semester, students may not drop a class. In order for a student to change classes, students must follow the

Handbook guidelines. For ALHSO classes, students have 4 weeks to drop a class with advisor

permission. After 4 weeks, students who drop a class will receive a WF or WP on their transcript.

GRADING: The student is solely responsible for staying current with their assignments. HVL teachers

will record online grades to Educate using information from the online teacher. Assignments which are

missing or late as indicated by the online instructor will be recorded as incomplete or zero and will make

the student ineligible the same as a regular HVL course.

Registration Deadlines - Students wishing to enroll in an online course must take the following steps:

1. Confer with their advisor or registrar for a list of available on-line classes.

2. Indicate online classes in which they wish to enroll on their spring course selection sheets.

3. Fill out online class enrollment forms and return with registration fees by deadline.

Dual Enrollment College Credit Courses

at Concordia University and Schoolcraft College

DUAL ENROLLMENT registration must be done BY THE STUDENT at the university website and is

generally due by JULY 1, but it is the responsibility of the student to adhere to application deadlines.

A change in legislation now permits non-public schools to participate in dual enrollment for free, paid for

by public dollars. As these courses are paid for by the state, religious instruction is not included. In

partnership with Concordia University and Schoolcraft College, HVL’s dual enrollment college credit

courses allow high school students to earn college credit, along with high school credit, while continuing

their other courses and activities. Earning college credit while in high school can accelerate a student's

degree completion and help students adapt early to the rigor of college level study. Schoolcraft College

and Concordia University Ann Arbor’s Dual Credit program allows high school students to earn both

high school and college credits through online courses taught by faculty. The classes that students are

eligible for must not be offered by HVL. Many colleges will accept the credits, however students should

check with prospective colleges to see if they accept the dual enrollment credits. Credits generally are not

listed on the high school transcript and may be replaced by reducing the number of high school

graduation credits by .5 per semester.

Dual Enrollment College Credit Courses

Through Concordia University, Ann Arbor - Students wishing to enroll must go to the Concordia

University website to apply by the deadline provided by the University.

Through Schoolcraft College, Livonia - Students wishing to enroll in Schoolcraft College must go to

the Schoolcraft College website to apply by the deadline provided by the University.

Student and Parent Online Class Contract

HVL is excited to offer numerous online courses for high school credit. These courses include

all Advanced Placement Courses, Honors Courses and many electives. These online classes are

offered at Huron Valley Lutheran High School so that students can have more scheduling options

and can take classes that normally could not be offered. Parents and students must understand

that online courses take self motivated, independent students. There are challenges and serious

risks of course failure when students are responsible for keeping current with assignments in an

online environment. Students and parents understand and agree to the following online class

policies:

Students have 10 days to drop an online class the same as a regular class. Students who

drop a class after 10 days will receive a WF (withdrawn fail), will forfeit the fee paid for

the class and this will be reflected on their transcript. The course or alternate course will

have to be retaken to fulfill graduation requirements.

HVL Staff will monitor the student progress weekly and add the grade to Cornerstone.

ALL due assignments must be completed by the weekly check day. Incomplete work or

a failing grade will make a student ineligible for weekly eligibility the same as a regular

HVL class.

The online instructor is solely responsible for all grades. The HVL staff is not.

THE STUDENT IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING WORK ON TIME.

If you do not understand due dates or the class schedule, contact the online instructor

immediately. Ignorance of due dates is not an acceptable excuse and you will be marked

ineligible and possibly fail the course.

Students will be assigned a daily study hall in which they MUST work on their online

class.

Students who fail an online class or repeatedly have incomplete, late or undone work will

not be allowed to take an online class for a period of at least one semester.

In order for seniors to receive their diploma at graduation, the online class must be 100%

submitted/completed/paid for with a current passing grade by the last day of exams

PRIOR to graduation (even if the online class has a different deadline.) Students who

complete their work after this deadline may receive a diploma AFTER graduation if the

work is completed with a passing grade.

Online Course Cost: There is an additional cost for taking online courses, and parents will pay a

fee of $100 for each semester of an elective online course as well as paying for any books and

special course fees. HVL will pay the remainder of the cost of the course. The only exception is

in the case of a student who cannot take a course required for graduation because it does not fit

into the HVL schedule. In these cases, HVL will pay for some or all of the course fee depending

on individual circumstances, provided that the student has not previously failed that course. If the

student is taking an online course because they failed the course at HVL or a previous school or if

they choose to enroll in a core class to accelerate their education, the family will pay the full cost

of the course. Fees must be paid before grades will be added to a student transcript

Dual Enrollment at

The classes that students are eligible for must not be offered by HVL. A change in legislation now permits non-public schools to participate in dual enrollment, paid for by public dollars.
