THE HEAD COACH: Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an of-fensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its high-est highs, was finally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreedto become head coach of the Huskies in December of 2013. Petersen, 49,the only two-time winner of the Paul Bear Bryant Award (2006 and 2009),compiled an exceptional 92-12 record in his eight seasons as Boise Statehead coach (2006-2013), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and14-0 in 2009) and two BCS bowl berths. He won five conference titles and

posted a 57-6 record in conference play (WAC from 2006-10 and MountainWest from 2011-13). Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach of theYear Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of his eightseasons and to 12 or more in four straight (2008-11). In 2006, Petersens firstseason in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their first undefeated sea-son since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 season wascapped by a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a gameremembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. That Boiseteam ended the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press top 25 poll. The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and finished out of the pollsfor what would be the only time in Petersens first seven seasons. The 2008squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final top 25, finishing the regularseason undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their second unde-feated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU, 17-10,

in Arizona, becoming the first team from a non-BCS conference ever to wintwo BCS bowl games. The 09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the final APpoll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 final ranking anda win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first of three straight trips to Vegas forBoise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, finishing with a No. 8 finalranking. Last season, Petersens team went 11-2 and beat Washington in theLas Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 final ranking. In 2013, Boise State, whichfaced Washington in the first game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium, finished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW priorto the Broncos bowl game). Throughout his teams unmatched on-field suc-cess, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, BoiseState was the only school to finish in the top 10 in both major polls and alsoreceive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straight

such awards for the program. Boise States APR was second in the nation in2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the best APRfor the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his work withquarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky and KellenMoore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins as astarting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards. Moorewas the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in both passingand total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-most in NCAAhistory while his 14,667 career passing yards were fifth-most. He twice ledthe nation in passing efficiency and set an NCAA record for season intercep-tion percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in 2009. During his eightseasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Before takingover as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncos offensivecoordinator from 2001-05, during which his teams averaged 41.3 points per

game, leading the nation in scoring in both 2002 and 2003. Petersen beganhis coaching career in 1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In1989, he became the Aggies varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersenmoved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. That season, AlexVan Pelt passes for more than 3,100 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 1993, Pe-tersen moved back west to take over a QBs coach at Portland State, helpingthe Vikings to Division II playoff berths in each of his two seasons. In 1995,he took a job at Oregon as the receivers coach under Mike Bellotti, a positionhe held before moving to Boise as offensive coordinator in 2001. Born in YubaCity, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1964, Petersen graduated from Yuba City High in 1983and went on to play quarterback at Sacramento City College. From there, hetransferred to UC Davis, earning a bachelors degree in psychology in 1988. He

later earned a masters in educational psychology from Davis. At Davis, hnumerous school records, including the single-season standards for pasefficiency, completions, completion percentage, touchdown passes and offense as well as the career mark for completion percentage. He still remin the top 10 in Aggies history in numerous season and career categoand his season and career completion percentage records still stand. In 1Petersen was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Playthe Year and earned UC Davis Colby E. Slater Award as the schools MAthlete of the Year. He was also a captain and won the teams Jerry NAward (Most Valuable and Inspirational). He was inducted into the Cal AAthletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Petersen and his wife, Barbara, are parentwo sons, Jack and Sam.

COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board for 2014, the Huskycoaching staff obviously includes mostly new faces. In fact, of the ninefull-time coaches on the 2014 staff, six worked for Chris Petersen lastyear at Boise State. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Pe-tersens staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including thelast four as coordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive line-man, also worked at his alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate headcoach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13

season coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning hewas with Petersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and re-cruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersens Broncos staffduring Petersens entire eight seasons, though he started as director ofoperations. Hes coached running backs the last five years at BSU. Assis-tant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory comes to Washingtonhaving spent the last four seasons at Boise State. He was the defensivecoordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also havingcoached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference atOregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned inseveral top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days,

was quarterbacks coach at Boise State the last two seasons. Previoan offensive coordinator at Montana, he takes that role (along with at Washington. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keithbertson, was Petersens DBs coach in Boise the last two years, haspent five seasons in the NFL before that. Wide receivers coach BPease worked at BSU under Petersen for his first six seasons as hcoach. The former standout quarterback at Montana, Pease returne

the Northwest after having coached at Florida the last two seasonsfensive line coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Choate has a slar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006 through 2before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in 2013. Amongnine full-time assistants, the only returner from the 2013 season is tends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 ahaving worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he also in charge of tight ends. The UW staff for four grad assistants in 2includes one returner and three newcomers. The returner is former and NFL wideout DAndre Goodwin, whos back for his second year. joined by Ben Thienes, Joshua Taufalele and Gerald Alexander. Thiwas a GA at Boise State last season while Alexander was a standouat Boise State before playing in the NFL for five years. Taufalele is to both UW and Petersen. The former offensive lineman at New Me

most recently coached at Foothill College in California.

HUSKIES vs. PANTHERS HISTORY: Given the geographical distthe two universities and the fact that Georgia State only began plafootball in 2010, it's obviously no surprise that the Huskies and Panthave never faced one another on the football field. In fact, the Hushave never played football against any program from the state of Geo

HUSKY-PANTHER TIES: While the player rosters include virtualcrossover, the Georgia State coaching staff includes five members direct ties to the UW program. Panthers head coach Trent Miles wasrunning backs coach at Washington from 2005 to 2007. During that pehe was on the same coaching staff as Tim Lappano and J.D. Williawho are both current assistants at Georgia State. Williams is also

older brother of former Husky safety Curtis Williams while Lappano'sTaylor played at the UW. Georgia State quarterbacks coach Luke Huathe brother of former Husky quarterbacks Brock and Damon Huard (Dais on the UW staff as the football program's chief administrative offiLuke was also a graduate assistant at Washington during Miles' timSeattle. Finally, GSU grad assistant Ronnie Fouch played quarterbacWashington before transferring to Indiana State, where he startedMiles. Fouch started eight games for Washington in 2008. He redshthe 2007 season and also appeared at quarterback in four games in 2before transferring. As for players, while there are a few Californianthe GSU roster, none of them attended the same high school as anyplayer. The only Husky from anywhere near Atlanta (and it's not THAT nis senior Travell Dixon, who grew up in Miami, Fla.

HUSKIESvs. SUN BELT: The only history that Washington shares the members of the Sun Belt Conference all comes via the UWs longassociation with Idaho. The Vandals officially joined the Sun Belt this son. Washington and Idaho have a long history of football, mainly duthe fact that the two universities were both a part of the Pacific CConference for many years. Idaho was a PCC member from 1922-1942again from 1945-1958, when the league was broken up and re-formethe AAWU. The UW is 25-2-2 all-time vs. Idaho and have won 18 in a Washington has never before played any of the other current footplaying members of the Sun Belt Conference.

T E A M N O T E SHOME vs.NON CONFERENCE: Washington has been very tough to beatin home, non-conference games over the last several decades. Going backto (and including) the 1981 season, the Huskies have posted a 59-13 recordagainst non-Pac-10/Pac-12 foes in Husky Stadium. Those 13 losses havecome to Nebraska (2010), LSU (2009), BYU (2008), Oklahoma (2008), OhioState (2007), Notre Dame (2005), Fresno State (2004), Nevada (2003), AirForce (1999), Nebraska (1997), Notre Dame (1995), Colorado (1989) and

Oklahoma State (1985). Notable wins during that stretch include victoriesover No. 19 Boise State last season, No. 22 Boise State in 2007, No. 11Michigan in 2001, No. 4 Miami in 2000, and No. 12 Nebraska in 1992.Prior to the 2004 loss to Nevada, Washington hadnt lost a home game toa non-league opponent since falling to Air Force, 31-21, on September 18,1999. The Huskies had won 10 such games before that Nevada loss. TheUW is 10-2 over its last 12 home, non-league games, with an eight-gamewinning streak.

1,000-YARD STREAK:With back-to-back stellar seasons the last twoyears, Bishop Sankey has extended to five the Huskies current streak of1,000-yard individual rushing seasons. Last year, the Doak Walker Awardfinalist broke the UW record with 1,870 rushing yards. The year before,he ran for 1,439. Sankey was just the 11th different player in UW historyto rush for 1,000 yards and his seasons was the 16th and 17th 1,000-yardseason in school history. In each of the last five seasons, the UW hasproduced a 1,000-yard back. Chris Polk reached the benchmark each of histhree seasons as a starter, running for 1,113 (2009), 1,415 (2010) and 1,488(2011). Polk and Sankey were the fourth and fifth Huskies ever to rush for1,000 yards in more than one season.

FOUR BOWLS IN FIVE YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON:By reach-ing a bowl game last year for the fourth season while just five years re-moved from a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. TheHuskies were just the second team in the last 50 years of major collegefootball to have gone from winless to four bowl games within five sea-sons. The only other program to accomplish that feat is Florida (winless in1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983).

THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference addedUtah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which alongwith California is one of two schools who have been in the conferencesince its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the otherthree Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and Califor-nia. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plusfour of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. Last year and in 2013, theHuskies dont face Utah or USC.

CAPTAINS:Washington will utilize game-by-game captains this seaHere is the game-by-game list:

Hawaii:Micah Hatchie, Hauoli Kikaha, Jaydon Mickens, Danny ShelEWU:DiAndre Campbell, Brian Clay, Andrew Hudson, Colin Tanigawa

Illinois:Dexter Charles, Evan Hudson, Cyler Miles, Shaq Thompson

THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 1923 (.758) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Husare 1-0 in such games this season (EWU).
