THE HEAD COACH:Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an of-fensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its high-est highs, was nally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreedto become head coach of the Huskies in December of 2013. Petersen, 49,the only two-time winner of the Paul Bear Bryant Award (2006 and 2009),compiled an exceptional 92-12 record in his eight seasons as Boise Statehead coach (2006-2013), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and14-0 in 2009) and two BCS bowl berths. He won ve conference titles and

posted a 57-6 record in conference play (WAC from 2006-10 and MountainWest from 2011-13). Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach of theYear Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of his eightseasons and to 12 or more in four straight (2008-11). In 2006, Petersens rstseason in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their rst undefeated sea-son since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 season wascapped by a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a gameremembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. That Boiseteam ended the year ranked No. 5 in the nal Associated Press top 25 poll. The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and nished out of the pollsfor what would be the only time in Petersens rst seven seasons. The 2008squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the nal top 25, nishing the regularseason undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their second unde-feated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU, 17-10,

in Arizona, becoming the rst team from a non-BCS conference ever to wintwo BCS bowl games. The 09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the nal APpoll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 nal ranking anda win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the rst of three straight trips to Vegas forBoise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, nishing with a No. 8 nalranking. Last season, Petersens team went 11-2 and beat Washington in theLas Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 nal ranking. In 2013, Boise State, whichfaced Washington in the rst game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium, nished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW priorto the Broncos bowl game). Throughout his teams unmatched on-eld suc-cess, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, BoiseState was the only school to nish in the top 10 in both major polls and alsoreceive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for nishing in the top 10percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straight

such awards for the program. Boise States APR was second in the nation in2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the best APRfor the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his work withquarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky and KellenMoore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins as astarting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards. Moorewas the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in both passingand total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-most in NCAAhistory while his 14,667 career passing yards were fth-most. He twice ledthe nation in passing efciency and set an NCAA record for season intercep-tion percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in 2009. During his eightseasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Before takingover as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncos offensivecoordinator from 2001-05, during which his teams averaged 41.3 points per

game, leading the nation in scoring in both 2002 and 2003. Petersen beganhis coaching career in 1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In1989, he became the Aggies varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersenmoved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. That season, AlexVan Pelt passes for more than 3,100 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 1993, Pe-tersen moved back west to take over a QBs coach at Portland State, helpingthe Vikings to Division II playoff berths in each of his two seasons. In 1995,he took a job at Oregon as the receivers coach under Mike Bellotti, a positionhe held before moving to Boise as offensive coordinator in 2001. Born in YubaCity, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1964, Petersen graduated from Yuba City High in 1983and went on to play quarterback at Sacramento City College. From there, hetransferred to UC Davis, earning a bachelors degree in psychology in 1988. He

later earned a masters in educational psychology from Davis. At Davis, numerous school records, including the single-season standards for pasefciency, completions, completion percentage, touchdown passes and offense as well as the career mark for completion percentage. He still remin the top 10 in Aggies history in numerous season and career categand his season and career completion percentage records still stand. In 1Petersen was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Playthe Year and earned UC Davis Colby E. Slater Award as the schoolsAthlete of the Year. He was also a captain and won the teams Jerry NoAward (Most Valuable and Inspirational). He was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. One of those nine losses was a big uin 1982 when the No. 2 Huskies fell to the Cardinal, 43-31, in Palo Altsecond UW loss during that stretch came at Stanford in 1994, when the Carupset 12th-ranked Washington, 46-28. More recently, the Cardinal bea

After no game in 2005, Stanford wsecond straight over the UW in a 20-3 victory in 2006 at Husky StadiumCardinal also won ve seasons ago in Seattle, 35-28, and in 2010 in Palo(34-14). Three years ago, Stanford blanked the UW, 41-0, at Husky Staand in 2011, the Cardinal won, 65-21, at Stanford. Last year, the Cardinal teh Dawgs in a close game in Palo Alto, 31-28, with Washington's attemdrive or a tie or the lead stalled at midifeld with 1:16 left on the clock. BSankey rushed for 125 yards and Keith Price threw for 350 in the loss. Inon a Thursday night in Seattle, the Huskies edged the No. 8 Cardinal, 1thanks to a 61-yard run from Bishop Sankey and a 35-yard TD catch fromWilliams. Prior to that, the most recent UW victory had come in 2007, whHuskies rushed for a total of 388 yards in a 27-9 win over the Cardinal.Rankin led the way with 255 yards on 36 carries. Over the last 17 season

two old league rivals have not played one other four times (1998, 1999,and 2005). Washington and Stanford rst played one another in 1893 in a that marked the rst major college opponent for UW. That game, played inSeattle, resulted in a 40-0 Stanford victory. There wouldnt be another mabetween the two schools until 1920, when the Cardinal nipped Washing3-0, in the last UW home game played somewhere other than Husky StaThree weeks after that game, the UW would open what would eventually to be known as Husky Stadium. After a 0-0 tie in 1921, the Huskies rst in the series came in 1922, 12-8 at Palo Alto.
