Dear Tuscarora Families,

Scheduling for school year 2019-2020 will begin this month! All students (rising 9-12) will be entering their course

requests for elective courses in ParentVUE/StudentVUE again this year. Core and World Language courses will be deter-

mined through teacher recommendations. Should parents have questions regarding these recommendations, parents are

requested to contact their student’s counselor for further discussion. The next step in the scheduling process is for students

to meet individually with counselors to discuss all course requests. Please pay close attention to the information your child is

bringing home regarding scheduling.

Report cards are scheduled to go out on February 8th. We encourage you to speak with your child and contact their

teachers if you should have any questions. Please continue to not only ask your child about homework, but to also ask to

see the completed homework. To assist in this effort, you are requested to continue to utilize ParentVUE as a tool to moni-

tor your child’s progress. If you are still in need of a password to access ParentVUE, please contact your child’s counselor

today.

Our February 27th, Rising 9 Parent Night will begin at 7PM in the auditorium. Department chairs and school counse-

lors will be available to answer questions about courses. Please give us a call if you have concerns or questions about the

program of studies or your child’s choices for next year’s courses.

Our website will have updates regarding scheduling as we go through this process. It is very important that serious

consideration be given to these choices now so that we can make accurate projections for next year’s master schedule and

staffing. Once your child’s choices are made and discussed with counselors and with you as parents, you will have until June

14, 2019 to make changes.

Many important things are happening at THS and I encourage you to visit our website to get information about those events.

ASVAB Test - March 2, 2019

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be given at Loudoun Valley High School on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon. This test is a good tool for students to use to see where their strengths and weakness lay as they look at careers for their future. Students need to register at the following website: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf2WwpqEmEL47

The ASVAB is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world, developed and maintained by the Depart-ment of Defense. More than half of all high schools nationwide administer the ASVAB test to students in grades 10, 11 and 12 (sophomores cannot use their scores for enlistment eligibility).

The ASVAB consists of the following eight individual tests:

• General Science

• Arithmetic Reasoning

• Word Knowledge

• Paragraph Compensation

• Mathematics Knowledge

• Electronics Information

• Auto and Shop Information

• Mechanical Comprehension

Students are provided with scores on each of these individual tests and three Career Exploration Score composites: Ver-bal Skills, Math Skills and Science and Technical Skills. The battery takes approximately three hours to complete, and test results are returned to schools in a few weeks.

The military uses students’ ASVAB scores to identify the occupations that best suit their abilities. Junior, Senior and post-secondary school students can use their ASVAB scores for enlistment for up to two years after taking the test.

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program can help young adults identify and explore potentially satisfying occupations and develop effective strategies to realize career goals.

Please visit the ASVAB website for more information and sample questions.

Be sure to regularly visit the THS School Counseling Scholarship Information page to find out about scholarships. The page is updated often so you will want to check it often.

Visit the LCPS School Counseling webpage for up-to-date county wide scholarship postings.
